I have been practicing various types of traditional(mostly Chinese, but not exclusively) and non-traditional martial arts for 25 years. The last 6 years, Steve Grody has been my primary instructor. With the rise of promotions like the UFC, the idea of what martial arts are has gratefully changed. There’s still a discernment that needs to come into public consciousness– sport vs. non-sport. Steve’s training might be described primarily as «non-sport» oriented, though of course much of what is taught would be relevant, even novel, in any combative context. Styles might also be put aside when considering Steve’s studio. While his lineage is Jeet Kune Do(AKA«JKD» via the great Dan Inosanto, asked to carry the torch for Bruce Lee) and Kali(via the equally great Edgar Sulite), there’s equal measures of Muay Thai, western boxing, and other relevant combative arts. Would also note here that Steve goes to some lengths to consider self and situational awareness, as well as issues that ought to be «common sense» when looking at being prepared for most likely, to least likely combative eventualities. Use of available and legal weapons(both carried and improvised) are addressed in great detail. The training is of equal utility for men, women, older and younger persons. The material is organized in a more clearsighted and useable way than I’ve ever seen. Intensity of training is based solely on the abilities of the student. Training is always comfortable but challenging, and always fun. Hours of instruction are flexible. As John said above, despite how long I have been seeing Steve in private instruction, I always leave with a chunk of material that improves my performance as a «martial artist». Am always grateful for feeling when I leave the studio that Steve has done most of the work in separating what is useful vs. what might not be, if some aggressive circumstance were to arise. A rarity in the millennium– I can wholly recommend Steve’s instruction. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me here through my profile.
