If food Trucks were high school classmates, the Spring Street Smoke House Truck would be the kid who would show up at the 5 year reunion to discover that no one recognized him; even though he till looked exactly the same. Or to put it another way; it is like a Good news bad news joke. The good news is there is really nothing bad I can say about my meal here, but the bad news is there really isn’t anything good i can add either. This truck is as average as it gets. I had an average tri-tip sandwich on an average roll for $ 6.99. You guessed it was average size, and kind of tender but not remarkably so. The tri-tip was a pinch-hitter. It wasn’t on the menu, but was offered up when I asked for a brisket. It was a nice cut of meat, nit I wish they served it with more sauce, or at least had condiments available at the truck. I also had the Mac and Cheese which was $ 2.00 worth of average pasta, with a very non-descript cheese. it was above average in terms of texture, but wouldn’t you know it? It lacked in cheese. Ho-hum, it was average. Spring Street Smoke House Truck didn’t bother to post the signs required under Los Angeles city ordinance regarding the smoking ban. That would have gotten them the average 3 star rating. Gourmet Food Truck #174 on my never-ending quest to try every truck in «So Cal»

My Thursdays are usually fairly long and so I never have the opportunity to get the food trucks that are parked at UCLA. Fortunately, class ended early and there was no line — which was odd. BBQ? I super super super LOVEBBQ. I especially like a good BBQ sauce I could drench it on all types of meat, dip my fries in it… this truck smelled pretty damn good from a distance and I was craving some BBQ, so I thought why not? Like all food trucks, this one is just as pricey — $ 6.99 for a sandwich. You can choose from either pulled pork, brisket, chicken or their burger. I wanted pulled pork. Pulled pork is probably one of my favorite forms of BBQ, especially when it was tender. Now I know to always check Unilocal before. Oh why didn’t I? I still ask myself that question now as I’m writing this review. I got the sandwich which had measly portions of pulled pork and more slaw. The pork was dry, not at all flavorful or tender. It was dry where you could’ve cooked it at the minimal time at the highest temperature to just cook the meat. The BBQ sauce was mediocre. I wasn’t a fan of the bun either — it was too flaky, not toasted — something you’d buy at the supermarket and stuff things in just to call it a sandwich. I’ve had some good BBQ before, this isn’t one of them. Too pricey for what you get, meat is too dry. The no-line was probably a hint already, but not going back again.

Why oh why did I not heed all you wise Unilocalers! UGH… I was late to work today and didn’t have time to pack a lunch so I headed to the daily food truck at UCLA today. What a huge mistake! I bought a $ 6.99 brisket sandwich(dry, very little sauce, okay flavor) with a large amount of slaw(meh, too) on a toasted french roll. No pickles. No side item. No «jalapeño corn muffin» as stated online. I asked for mac & cheese and was told they didn’t have it. They were also out of diet coke. The guy who took our orders and told us they were out of mac & cheese & diet coke, was dry as the sandwich — no charm, no customer service at all. The sandwich was probably worth $ 4 at the most. I’m still hungry.

This is a review for the UCLA Food Truck SSSH, so perhaps the other locations are different. I dropped by around 11:30a to beat the lunch rush, got a pulled pork sandwich and a side of potato salad for $ 8. The food came really quickly, the people were nice. The sandwich was really disappointing. As I’m sitting here eating it I’m feeling foolish for spending $ 7 on it(their online menu is outdated). The meat is very dry, the overall texture is soggy, the coleslaw/lettuce has no flavor, and there is just a tiny amount of bbq sauce; what there is is tasty, though. The potato salad, however, was quite good, and for $ 1 a good deal. Still, don’t expect anything sizable — it comes in one of those tiny styrofoam condiment cups, about twice the size of the ones you use for salsa at Mexican places.

For $ 8 we got a pulled pork sandwich and a side of mac and cheese. The sandwich was passable, but only due to the bbq sauce. Without it, the meat didn’t have much flavor. I was mostly eating it, because I was hungry. The mac and cheese was terrible, and we ended up throwing it away. It seemed like they had watered it down, so that the cheese was loose and clumpy, almost cottage-cheese like. It wasn’t salty, and it generally lacked flavor. I wouldn’t visit this truck again, unless there was nothing else around to eat.

Expensive for a food truck! supposedly gourmet but it wasn’t that good. For $ 7 you get a sandwich and a corn bread muffin. The sandwich in my opinion is very small for the price. For the same price you can get a bigger burrito in other trucks, or a philly cheesesteak twice the size from Lee’s gogi. First, the corn bread muffin. Decent but salty. The inside of the muffin was soft and relatively moist for corn bread, but the outside was very salty. Second, the pulled pork sandwich, out of recommendation from the truck chef/driver. Aside from the size of the sandwich and the relatively little pulled pork in the sandwich, the pork itself wasn’t the greatest. The pork in itself lacked flavor, I would have preferred it to be smoked a little longer. The bbq sauce was pretty good and made up for the lack of smokiness. But the worst part was that some of the pork was still cold. It was obvious that the pork was pulled in the morning and left in containers in the truck. Not even heated containers mind you, the pork was cold! I’m sure that with the modern food trucks coming out, there is a way to put a smoker in the truck. Keep smoking the pork! or at least keep it heated up before someone orders! Very disappointing. It got my hopes up to see a new food truck at USC, but its not worth it. Save your money and go elsewhere. Expensive for a small lunch which wasn’t nearly the best BBQ I’ve ever had.

Took the whole family there this weekend expecting some real BBQ. We all left very unsatisfied. The setting is great, the selection of local beer is cool and the service was o.k. The food… the food was poor. If you are looking for real BBQ, this is not the place. All the meat was over-sauced with this vinagery tangy sauce. BBQ should be about the meat and the smoke used to cook it. Both of which were hidden by the overwhelming taste of the sauce. Sorry to say we wasted about $ 70 bucks for a family of four.

This is another gourmet taco truck. They specialize in barbecue and have a very limited number of vegetarian items. The best thing on their menu was the cornbread. It was not actually cornbread, instead it was a small corn muffin. Instead of being a simple corn muffin, it had green chile or jalapenos in it, While I would have preferred a bit more of a coarse cornmeal consistency, the corn muffin was very good and was fresh. They also have macaroni and cheese available. Their macaroni and cheese was not distinguishable from what I have had in a caffeteria. Incredibly bland cream(hardly worthy of being called cheese) sauce in mushy macaroni. Not worth ordering at all.

Brisket was dry. Gross dry. Don’t bother. Cornbread was even worse. It was quite possible the worst cornbread I’d ever had. Taste was barely passable, but the texture reminded me more of fine powder than of cornbread, and that was pretty truly awful. 1.5 stars, but I’ll be generous and give them 2.

I guess i went on an off day, because my experience was nothing like the previous reviewers. 1 Brisket and 1 Pulled Pork slider for $ 5 seemed like a deal. The wait was short(since there wasn’t really anyone else at this truck) Immediately i noticed my pork looked unbelievably dry and gristly. And that’s how it tasted. The brisket has a little more flavor than the pork, but that was even drier. I don’t like chewy meat. The coleslaw/cabbage thing on top was strange in taste and the bread was bread. Decent, not great, amount of food for the price, but the quality was severely lacking. Try Barbie Q’s if your craving BBQ from a truck.

Yum, food trucks have been all over UCLA lately and this truck was especially good. We were lucky to get the last brisket! It was $ 6 and came with a jalapeño cornbread muffin. We also got a side order($ 1) of mac and cheese, a very small side order. The mac and cheese could’ve used a lot of salt, but since it came with a small packet of salt it was fine. The sandwich was amazing! They left some small bits of fat in the meat so hopefully you’re not fat-phobic. The bread is flaky on the outside, soft on the side and the coleslaw is the perfect complement to the brisket.

I was having a pretty bad day. My attempt to make it to the Farmer’s Market to pick up some food to cook failed as traffic sucked. Work in general was pretty harsh and hectic today to add in a general lack of sleep from the last few days. yeah, it was just a bad day. So perhaps when I saw the Spring Street Smoke House truck, it was a glimmer of hope. The truck looked like it was about to close up shop. So hey, maybe I should be thankful that I was able to at least get that in. The picket fence, which seems like they put out around the truck was being packed up in the back. Menu was gone and so I had to ask what they were serving up. BBQ Chicken, Sandwich or St. Luis spare ribs were my choices. In the grand scheme of things, that’s a pretty good A, B, C type of option. I went with the St. Luis ribs, a side of potato salad and baked beans, $ 10 and 10 minutes later I had my plate of ribs. I have to say, for $ 10 it was a pretty massive amount of food, especially of the BBQ variety. It was really warm and really did hit the spot. The baked beans weren’t the best I ever had, but I thought they were pretty acceptable. The potato salad was pretty good. It could use some salt in some spots, but hey, that’s based on your taste on how much you like salt. On to the ribs. The meat was fall off the bone delicious and warm. The BBQ sauce wasn’t overwhelming and didn’t over power the taste of the ribs. For the $ 8 plus the $ 2 for the sides, I think I got a massively good deal. I heard of some people who didn’t like the sandwich because it seemed over priced for what you got. I’m glad I went with the ribs in the end. The food was warm, tasty and very much something I would do again if I saw the truck and was hungry. Probably the highlight of a piss poor day.

The truck was pulled up a couple of blocks away from work and it was a better option than the usual ho hum eateries around here. The menu is straight and to the point as a roach coach should be. For $ 7 it bought me a beef brisket sandwich with corn bread and a pickle. I hurried my tray of food back to my office to start attacking. I ran into the my eyes were totally bigger than my stomach dilemma. They pack on the BBQ sauce onto the sandwich along with the coleslaw. I could only eat half of it and I still need to unbutton my pants. The sauce was laid on a little thick but different strokes for different folks. The corn bread had a hint of jalapeño for an added something. Once again, another good deal offered by the roach coach mobile brigade.

I stopped there this afternoon and had the Pulled Pork Sammy with Baked Beans, and Cole Slaw. It came in a basket with a little cornbread and a pickle slice. The sauce is good. The pulled pork wasn’t bad at all. I also like the beans. If there were a table or at least some chairs it would be much better, but alas, I don’t think city codes will let them do that. I ate sitting on the curb. Pretty danged tasty for some quck grab and go BBQ.

I had the worst BBQ sandwich in my life from this truck. The brisket was burnt tasting in a sweet and very salty sauce. The bread was OK and there was a generous portion, but I could not eat it. I had to throw away the sandwich — and I was hungry. Steer clear.

This all started with Twitter. I was on myway home and noticed marked 5 was in route to my area and I thought it would make a good match for dinner. Arriving at yogurt haven in eagle rock I waited and waited but no truck yet, sampled the yogurt and very good see other review. Tired and too hungry to wait any long I started to drive home up Colorado and just a few blocks away in front of 7 – 11 was this BBQ truck, I Was IN!!! They have a few sandwich options including smoked chicken pulled pork or hot links for $ 8 each. I decided on the sampler instead which was choose 2 meats add one rib(large rib) and one hot link plus corn bread with jalepenos. It didn’t look huge but it was dense and had great flavor. Cost was $ 12 which is not cheap but the quality of the meat, I had the brisket and pulled pork, was just excellent. I would really like to eat here again soon, PM me if you want to try it too.

Had a hankering for Tacos Estrella(the one on Colorado in the Valero gas station) last night before heading over to Colorado Wine Company but, alas, my beloved Estrella wasn’t there. Enter the Spring Street Smoke House. They park right in from of the tire store about 3 blocks past Colorado Wine Company. I went for the $ 12 sampler plus a side of beans for a buck extra. The Hot Link was great: nice and fiery and pretty lean. The pulled pork was good, if not exceptional, the Rib was really good: nice and meaty, not too fatty. the chicken was pretty solid but unremarkable. As the other reviewer stated, everything wasn’t much past room temperature which makes me a bit nervous as it’s coming off a truck. Now I’m a HUGEBBQ fan, Baby Blues, in Venice, Big Mama’s Rib Shack in Pasadena, Mr. Cecil’s in West LA, the Barn Burner in Pasadena. I eat at all these places regularly so comparing them to a truck really isn’t totally fair but, that being said, it was good and I will definitely go again. It’s so local and easy and the Pinotage I had with it at Colorado Wine Company was the perfect pairing for the smoky, sweet, spiciness of the sauce and meat. And the person behind the window was very nice. Major points for service! Yet another great offering in Eagle Rock!

There’s a NEWKID in town… or another TRUCK that is… So were heading down Colorado Blvd and see this New Truck called Smoke House BBQ… sittin’ in front of the 7−11…(ha, ha, ha I’m sure Oinkster is lovin’ this). OK New place I’m checkin’ it out!, the dude said they are going to be there in the later afternoon to the evening on Tuesdays & Thursdays, and the will be in front of ALLSTARLANES on Eagle Rock blvd Monday, Wednesday, Friday… So they have a small menu on the truck, and we decide to go with the $ 6.95 Sandwich… we had 1– Brisket and 1– Pulled Pork and it comes with corn bread also had two sides of baked beans $ 1.00 each extra and we shared the sandwiches. The sandwich is pretty small… and the bread(roll) was good, the Brisket was just OK nothing special but was not bad, one thing I did not like was that the meat was just«barely warm», the corn bread was pretty good too not dry at all and it had little specks of green(I assume jalapenos) though it was not spicy. The Pulled Pork sandwich was MUCH better tasting but also the meat was«barely warm» The Baked Beans were good though nothing special I’ve had much better but nothing to complain about! Overall it’s OK… the sandwich is small if you ask me, but $ 6.95 for a BBQ sammy… YEAH I’d do the Pulled Pork again but not the Brisket. We’ll see if these guys make it here with the«Oinkster» just a block away! But it’s not bad so if you see the TRUCK and like BBQ check it out. «IF» your interested you can also follow these guys on I think face book? but go to and check it out!
