(Dined 01÷17÷15SA @ 9:00pm): Nothing to snooze about the Mexican comida being sold out of this dog house! Thanks to Daniel Moreno, the owner of new food truck Sonora Hot Dogs, a friend and I came to DTLA for an evening of complimentary eats, cheap drinks, and whatever else came our way. Can this latest food truck run with the big dogs!?: Sonora Hot Dog(regular $ 4.00) — Its namesake, your tastebuds were overjoyed with a bacon-wrapped Hebrew National Hot Dog, beans, diced onions and tomatoes, guacamole salsa, mayo and mustard topped by a bacon-wrapped cream cheese-stuffed jalapeño all encased in a bun. The bacon was a hit — especially on the jalapeño — the hot dog was small but packed juicy flavor, the vegetables were fresh, and it was spicy… just not enough! On a side note, apparently it was a certain type of bun(like a pita or torta) that made this meal special from the rest. Sadly, the bakery delivered a normal bun, so I never got the full-effect of this touted pig-in-a-blanket dish. Taco Dog(regular $ 3.50) — Nearly identical to the Sonora Hot Dog EXCEPT on a corn tortilla. I’d recommend adding the jalapeño«treat» and more spiciness. Shrimp Taco(regular $ 3.00) — Eat bite contained crisp plump shrimp cooked in craft-beer batter along with usual taco fare. You weren’t cheated in the amount of shrimp you got! Potato Taquitos(2)(regular $ 3.00) — This reminded me of Jack-In-The-Box’s «Monster Tacos»(meant as a compliment on a drunken night). I’d grab a fork, pour the salsa and go at it. If not, have a napkin ready as potential potato spillage may occur! Chicken Taco(regular $ 2.50) — Again, you weren’t cheated on the amount of chicken this taco packed; it was like a whole bird was squeezed in! I found myself picking out some of the seasoned shredded chicken just so I was able to pick up the taco. This was good shit! Cucumber Mint Agua(regular $ 2.50) — It was cool, freshly made, refreshing and perfect for alcohol. Mexican Coca Cola(regular $ 2.50) — Accept no substitutes; real sugar all the way. Service — Outside of being late to their own party, on this particular occasion they pulled out all the stops and sampled the entire menu, asked for feedback, and answered any questions we had. Sure, they had some first-night issues, but those will be worked out in time. Daniel and the two women helpers were very friendly and simply happy to serve us. Just don’t be late next time! Lol Parking(Varied) — We parked at a nearby Paragon Parking lot for $ 6.00 at the corner of Spring St. and 4th St. . Otherwise, there were metered parking along the main drag of 4th St. and all surrounding streets, as well as numerous other parking lots in the neighborhood. Save yourself the headache, park at a lot and just walk wherever you needed to go. The exercise did you good, the area was safe, and chances were you needed to walk off the alcohol back to your car. Atmosphere, décor, ambience — Your standard food truck, they needed to brand it, add some lights, speakers, and a more visible menu. Therer were no tables, chairs, TVs or background music. Attire — Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. Overall, I enjoyed Sonora Hot Dogs and wished them the best in their new adventure . With a residency outside Bar 107 , it made for a perfect evening of cheap drinks and eats. They appeared to be the only food truck on the block with the Continental Club and Bar AMA across the street and nearby bar The Lash just to name a few. A limited menu, simple and certain to change as they figured out the different crowds . Prices were standard but with good portion size. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above(total bill was around $ 0.00 [regular $ 21.00] before tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice… AMEX! 4.0STARS
