I wanted my 1200^th review to be something a bit more special than the dozens of rest stop or gas station reviews that I’ve been promulgating while on this 2000+ mile journey I’ve been engaged in for a week, and SHADOW just happened to capture that vibe for me very well.
And speaking of SHADOW, for me, what IS the best part of SHADOW? The fact that it is sooooo good to be back at the Monte Cristo!
THE SET-​UP
Dark Wave, Dark Gothic-​Industrial, Dark Techno-​EBM Music & Dancing Format in an exquisite environment of dressed-​to-​die people in an alternative heaven — What’s not to love?
SOME HISTORY
I first came to this venue in October 2006 when I was first seduced by DJ AMANDA JONES and DJ XIAN VOX with their incredible talents of cutting-​edge music selections, avante garde mixes, and their tireless «education» & promotion of the newest, most eclectic music-​projects.
I believe why they and their progeny of DJs they’ve mentored — including DJ Jason Farber, one of the stars tonight — is their reverence for older classic Gothic & Industrial musical-​artists.
AMBIANCE & MOOD
Welcome to the most transcendent «Twilight Heaven» I have ever experienced, created by The Monte Cristo — first as Malediction, then by Shadow.
THE BALLROOM
As a venue, when enjoying Gothic-​Industrial-​EBM-​Dark Wave music events such as MALEDICTION, RUIN (Saturday nights), and now SHADOW (Friday nights), the Monte Cristo and it’s ballroom hosts the best in very cutting-​edge club environments:
The dance floor of the ballroom is large and spacious for both the most ethereal muses of softer ballads (think «Dead Can Dance», «Faith & The Muse», «Delerium», «De/​Vision», «VNV Nation», etc. etc.) and the hardest *STOMPS* putting craters in the floor (think «CombiChrist», «Das Ich», «Covenant», «VNV Nation» (again), etc. etc.)
OUTSIDE CLUB PATIO
And if you want to catch some fresh air, enjoy a beautiful view of the City of Angels, and take a break from the dancing (or smoke a contraband clove-​cigarette — go ahead! I do!), there is a rooftop social-​mixing area. [This expansive area has proved very vital with events requiring more «pageantry», such as Malediction’s previous «Military Fashion Show Competitions.
