I ordered some food to go. The food was okay, not bad but nothing over the top. Their mocha buns however, were the bomb! The Papa Cham was really good too. They only get 4 stars because of the mocha buns and the papa cham.

First time having Malaysian food and it was divine! I went with a group of 8 and everything at the table was delicious! We loved the Roti Canai so much we kept ordering it and lost count. The curry sauce served with it was robust and pleasing in flavor! I had the beef and coconut milk rice and it was flavored perfectly. Portion size was perfect. We also had the mocha buns which was a hit for the whole table. There was only one other table if guests so the service was great. Sunny was our server and she was attentive and friendly. Downside…they are moving. I’m not sure where Monterey Park is, but I’d follow them there for sure. In fact, since tonight is the last night open, my sister and I might roll out for dinner. Yum!

CONS: 1. Curry Laksa — soup was too thick, tasted more like Vietnamese curry noodle soup than that of Singaporean’s. Only the egg noodles or big flat rice noodles were available. Borneo Kalimantan Cuisine and Little Malaysia Restaurant use small rice vermicelli noodles with their curry laksa, which tastes way better. 2. Malaysian Braised Beef — had this terrible blood taste to it, ewww! 3. Beef & Chicken Satay — the meat pieces were tiny and not tasty. PROS: 1. Nasi Lemak — tasty, good like any other restaurants. 2. Mocha & Milk Buns — typical good, but nothing to wow about. 3. Roti Cani — thin and good, tasted better with kaya sauce than the spicy curry sauce. 4. Parking — plenty. Overall, I didn’t find anything special about this restaurant, nothing stood out as to make me want to come back.

Authentic Malaysian food. Where else can you find such Malaysian delicacy? Roti Canai — delicious flatbread that’s an alternative to rice and noodle. If you get it as combo plate, I recommend these add ons: Sambal Terung — I enjoy eggplant, especially saucy, deep fried eggplant. Curry Chicken — nothing like Japanese curry and nowhere as spicy as Indian curry. Malaysian style curry has a unique spice flavor to it. I love how the meat just melts off the bone. There are several rice options. Since you’re here, get the unique Nasi Lekma rice. My biased taste buds adore the fragrant rice that’s flavored with coconut milk and fried anchovy. I think either you like it or you don’t. It’s unfortunate that the older Pasadena branch closed down. No surprising, Malaysian cuisine is unique… but at the same time similar to many South Eastern food like Thailand and Cambodia. The modern ambience makes you wonder what audience this restaurant is aiming for… the young, hip attendees of Vibe, the club that this place is attached to? I wonder how many would think the steep price is worth it after a night out. I personally find Malaysian cuisine very nostalgic. However, for the non-foodie, I wonder how many would care to venture here when there are so many similar options(i.e., Thai food) that is much, much less expensive.

I was soooo disappointed with PappaRich I was in Malaysia eating the legit stuff less than a year ago, so I had some high expectations coming here. Maybe that isn’t totally fair, but if your mission is to bring Malaysian food to other parts of the world, it should be more authentic. The roti canai was just okay. It was kind of thin and hard all around when it should be golden brown and crispy on the outside with warm softer layers in the middle. I was kind of disappointed that their laksa was curry flavored. In Malaysia the laksa is a hearty soup that is both spicy and sour. I ordered this anyway to try it because the menu had so few choices. I probably wouldn’t get it again. between this and the roti I just felt repetitive with the curry sauce. There’s so much more to Malaysian food than curry! The nasi lemak was just alright. The sambal was pretty good. The rice itself didn’t seem all that flavorful. The char kway teow was pretty good, but I’ve had better from Thai places. I wouldn’t come back and I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone looking to try Malaysian food.

I’ve been on PappaRich several times and every time I have not left there disappointed. Too often, Malaysian food in Los Angeles is watered down so I was happy to find that several of the dishes at PappaRich are about as authentic you can get short of cooking it yourself. The satay, roti canai, chao kway teo, and Curry Laksa are pretty legit. The menu is somewhat small but that’s ok since it’s quality over bland quantity. Of course, if you go to PappaRich then you MUST try the buns. The Mocha buns are soooooo good that you will not want to share with others. The mlik and cheese are almost as good but Mocha rules all. Pair that with some kaya toast and coffee cham(coffee+tea) and you have a pretty good snack/dessert. Definitely in my rotation.

I had a very satisfying lunch here. Everything’s so delicious! I love their curry and how it goes well with the rice or roti… ROTICANAI is the bomb. It looks simple, but it’s sooooooo good! That may be my newly discovered asian snack. Like seriously I can eat maybe five more of those. I love every single bite of it. Yum! Char Koay Teow, i had to ask how to pronounce that the right way. lol. I love noodles in general, and this flat noodle did not disappoint. It’s flavorful but not overwhelming. Nasi lemak, men that rice on it’s own is just so so good. It looks like a plain steamed/fried rice, but when i tasted it… Ugh. Even if i refused to eat rice, i could NOT resist how good it tasted. The kind of rice I would eat everyday. Buns– cheese, milk and choco(mocha was sold out! That must be so good!) I LOVE them. They melt in your mouth. Just the right texture, and the flavor is there but not too much, just the right amount of it and i am going back for sure to get more of those! Service is great! We had a very nice korean server. He just makes everything else perfect. The atmosphere and interior… amazing. I love and I definitely will go back here more often. I’m so glad there are more cute restaurants like this in Ktown.

Pros: Good place to come and hang out with a chill atmosphere. Lotsa seating and wifi Parking is easy as there are spots right in front and in the back Good lighting but not too bright. Really good if you want to get work done Cons: 7 dollars for a beer? Any beer… who buys these? They closed an hour earlier than Unilocal says. they said they changed their hours day of. Prices of food seemed ok. i ordered the bread thing and it was 3 dollars… ok for a coffee shop. A friend of mine ordered the thai noodles and they were ok… nothing special and it was 9 dollars… not too bad Would I come again? Probably not but if im somehow close to it and dont feel like fighting for a table at a tom and toms maybe.

I honestly only came here to pick up one of their famous Mocha Buns which I had been craving since the K-Town Night Market, but ended up ordering everything else, and taking the Mocha Bun to go. Their menu is packed to the brim with delicious Malaysian delicacies, so I recommend bringing a few peeps to help you scarf down the delciousness. The definite must-try’s for first-timers are, of course, the Mocha Buns, but their combo plates are super-affordable, with enough food to feed 2 – 3 hungry people. I would personally go for a rice combo plate including thir more popular options like the Coconut Rice, Chicken Satay, Hard-Boiled Egg, Malaysian Peanuts, & Samba Sauce,(probably named that way because it’s so good, it makes you want to dance). The Toasted Hainan Bread needs a paragraph all its own. It’s, quite literally, the perfect piece of toast served with a sweet base of coconut Malaysian jam, and your choice of butter or peanut butter. Just try it. You can thank me later. They also serve Garlic Naan, which is surprisingly tasty. It’s a type of light & fluffy bread that can be served with curry sauce & potato, or eaten as is. Both ways are delicious, but the curry sauce & potato make quite the savory combination. And something needs to be said about the Roti Canai. It looks like an average tortilla, but the texture is chewy and soft, and is paired perfectly with their housemade curry sauce. These guys even do Fried Chicken perfectly. And their Malaysian Braised Beef would make even hardcore vegetarians question their lifestyle. Oh, and you’ll need a beverage to wash it all down. Their Pappa Cham, which is coffee & teh(sweet Malaysian milk), tastes just like a milk tea, without the boba. The staff is overworked, but sweet and accommodating, nonetheless. Just be prepared to wait a while for your food during peak hours.

Ah… this place was okay… I was raised in Malaysia for 14 years of my life and I moved here like 5 years ago. Despite the fact that i go back once a year, i miss Malaysian food dearly! I was super excited to know that this placed open rather close to me because all the other Malaysian restaurants I’ve been to were rather far(626 area). I also would eat at the PappaRich in Malaysia all the time and I love it there! So trust me when I say I was super excited to eat there. I brought my roommate with me who is also from Malaysia and we both ordered their lunch special — Fried flat rice noodle + fried egg plant. In Malaysia, this is called Char kway teow. It was okay… I think it needed more flavor to be honest. There was just something missing… I wanted to try the Mocha bun but they ran out, apparently they have it shipped from Malaysia and it takes a long while for it to come. So maybe that’ll taste pretty authentic. Lets just say I’m still hopeful in finding the perfect Malaysian restaurant.

I randomly saw this on my Instagram feed; I think it was posted by ktownnightmarket. I instantly forwarded this to my boyfriend, since he’s a huge fan of finding Malaysian food and asked him if he tried the place. He said he did a few times, and invited me to join him for lunch a few days later. What shocked me was the fact that I assumed this place was a club. I had neve seen PappaRich when I drove down Western, and realized that this place is attached to Vibe. What was shocking, the restaurant wasn’t in the club area. A nice natural modern place, with an open atmosphere, especially with all the glass walls, showcasing the lovely parking lot and the sunlight. Not knowing what to get, the boyfriend suggested getting coconut rice and some side meat dish. I decided on the Malaysian Braised Beef, simply because I wanted something authentic, something that would speak Malaysian to my taste buds. Love every bite of my dish, from the coconut rice with many different sides(hard boiled egg, salted fish, and the dollop of brown sauce), from the beef and its complex flavoring as it swam in the sauce. The boyfriend did tell me that this is authentic Malaysian breakfast, and I was happy that I was able to enjoy something so different in the middle of Koreatown. Do be careful of the rice dish; the pricing is a bit strange. It’s actually one price for the rice dish(no price difference in what kind of rice you want, except plain rice is a more cheaper option), and an additional price for the side of meat that you want.

Selon mon expérience, la nourriture était OK je voulais commander le bœuf et il était seulement à 11h45 le matin et mon dit que le bœuf né serait pas prêt avant 45 minutes. C’était un peu triste car je venais seulement pour cela.

My family and I were recommended Pappa Rich by friends. We are from Malaysia and we are always on the quest to find authentic Malaysian food. One thing to note is that if you look at the Pappa Rich website online, not all menu items will be available at this location due to limited resources. Our group of 4 ordered the following: Roti Canai– what’s fun about this is that you can actually watch someone make it and toss it around like they do back home! It was served with a side of curry for dipping. I’d say the roti canai was pretty close to the real thing! Garlic Naan Bread– this was a last minute add on for us. It’s also served with a side of curry. I’ve never had naan until I tried this one, but it was delicious and fluffy, full of flavor. Curry Laksa– it’s important to note that this is Singaporean laksa, it’s what Malaysians know to be curry mee. You have a choice of shrimp, chicken, or both at varying prices. It’s a fairly large bowl, and I’d say the flavor was fairly standard. Lots of yummy toppings in it! Nasi Lemak with Curry Ayam– this is coconut rice with chicken curry! The way rice dishes work, you choose your rice and it comes with peanuts, fried anchovies, sambal, and ½ a hardboiled egg for a base price and can add on your desired side. The rice itself was okay, it had the coconut flavor but in my opinion not enough. The curry was great though! Char Koay Teow– fried rice noodles. This was my absolute favorite dish and I found it the most spot on in terms of authentic flavor. There was a nice kick of spiciness and it was delicious. Overall, I gave Pappa Rich 4 stars because the food was pretty great, the atmosphere and overall look was nice, and the service was impeccable. The only reason I knocked off a star is because the place is a little hard to find and the prices, though pretty reasonable in general, were just a tad high in my opinion. That being said, I’d probably come back again! (PS sorry for the bad quality of the pictures, we were to hungry to take good ones!)

One of our favourite hang outs for food close to home(Singapore). I went there couple of times, especially for the teh, and they did not have it for some time which was disappointing. it really sets them apart(in terms of menu) from like restaurants. then one day, they happened to have it! But it was not even warm enough to enjoy. Teh like any other tea needs to be served hot. Otherwise the food is very good… no compromise on the flavours! Enjoy the ambience too… very quiet and laid back atmosphere!

Excited to see PappaRich make it to my part of L.A. Was originally a fan of their buns I’d pick up at the Pasadena location, glad they’re now closer. Those buns are so amazing! Crunchy on the outside, warm and fluffy on the inside with a melted buttery center. They don’t have a vast daily variety at this location, todays offering was Mocha bun and we were extremely satisfied with it. Slightly sweet and savory due to the salty melted butter. Absolutely delicious! Also got an order of Roti Canai Combo Plate which just comes with a small amount of curry for dipping and a single piece of potato. I wanted to bathe my tongue in that bowl of curry! So damn good! Will further explore their menu on following returns. The atmosphere is modern and chill, pretty quiet inside. Glad to have found me a new cute café/hangout spot with tasty food options. :)

Based on my experience at PappaRich, I think Malaysian food is tasty; I just wish there was a little more of a kick in the curries. The photos on the menu were somewhat deceiving. The curry laksa noodle soup was larger than the photos and the roti canai was smaller than expected. Good thing I ordered a side of chicken curry because the one that came with the roti canai was small and the potato was undercooked. I would come back to try the bread and the rice plates.

Best Malaysian in LA? Not sure. Some of the dishes were good, but not spectacular and execution of a couple of dishes were off the mark. PappaRich is an international restaurant chain, with most of their branches located in Malaysia. This one, is the only US location — the other PappaRich in Pasadena, is a bakery/café and is not affiliated with this restaurant nor the chain. This one is technically named Café PappaRich in order to distinguish between the two. The wait staff here is somewhat competent — however, they are not very familiar with Malaysian cuisine(so if you inquire about something that’s on their menus, they become confused. Nasi Lemak — Coconut Rice with sambal sauce, peanuts and anchovies. Natiohal dish of Malaysia, but not executed very well. It lacked the coconut fragrance/aroma and the flavor. I last had this dish at Mamak Malaysia in Flushing, NY, and it was so aromatic and flavorful, that it was easy to gobble it all up. It’s also not cooked up as fluffy as that of other places such as Mamak. The Penang(Malaysian Braised) Beef was very flavorful. The meat was tender but chewy. You really had to use some elbow grease to break a chunk into smaller pieces. Curry Laska had nice strong curry flavor. Just wished the noodle soup had more broth to it. There was basically only ¼ bowl of it. The Ayam Masak Merah wasn’t prepared well. The chicken pieces were overcooked and pretty much looked and tasted like a variation fo Chinese Sweet & Sour Chicken. The Sambal Terung(Eggplant) was one of the better dishes, especially price wise — only $ 3.99 for about 8 pieces. It was nice and spicy. Service needs to be improved here. The wait staff need to move around the dining area to ensure that all customers are well taken care of. There was just too many times of having to ring a buzzer to call them for the obvious — more water, «to go» boxes, bringing the check.

HIGHLIGHTS: Nasi Lemak, Roti Canai It’s funny how some others post about PappaRich being the best Malaysian food in SoCal — it’s the only Malaysian food in SoCal! Most of the time, when you search«Malaysian food» you get Thai results; similar, but definitely not the same! I’ve only been able to find Malaysian restaurants in the Bay Area, so when I saw that PappaRich existed in the US, in LA(!) I made the two-hour drive for it. This location is attached to VIBE, a nightclub — my guess. The staff was friendly, but a little slow for only having 4 tables seated. For lunch, we ordered the Roti Canai, Nasi Lemak, Chicken Char Koay Teow, and Malaysian Braised Beef. I praise the efforts and am glad I got to drive up for it, but the food doesn’t compare to the real deal. The roti canai was really good; the roti was very similar to the texture you will find in MY and the curry was very flavorful. The Nasi Lemak(coconut rice) was light and fluffy with the perfect hint of coconut. The noodles were okay, similar to chow fun you might find at a Chinese restaurant. The sauce the beef was cooked in had a good flavor, but the beef tasted like beef-stew, beef — if that makes sense. Only if they had a dessert menu… I’m thinking something with durian in it. That would have pushed PappaRich to 5-stars! Any dessert, for that matter would have been nice. Even mango with sticky rice. Their international menu boasts ABC and tau foo fa. How about roti tisu since they’ve already got the roti recipe down? A two-hour drive is a lot easier than a 15-hour plane drive, but PappaRich left me wanting the real deal. I’m glad the chain exists in the US, so that others can get a chance to taste the delicious food Malaysia has to offer, but it doesn’t compare to eating the food in a mamak with some warm teh-tarik to sip on.

BESTMALAYSIANFOODINLA /SOCAL EVER! omggggg where do I even start?! Seriously, I ordered their nasi lemak and wow! Their coconut rice is cooked perfectly! Wahhhh thinking of it makes me hungry again! the sweet and sour chicken is good too! Definitely taste like how my mother would cook it and the portion is large too! So that is good! Roti canai getting massaged by korean is something new to me! Eventhough the bread is kinda chewy compare to mamak in Malaysia, it still taste good and they made it fresh every time! I mean how often do the stalls here make their our roti canai? Often always frozen prata that I can buy in supermarket. This is is a must go! For Malaysian who miss home and for introduction to malaysian food 101 for americans!

I’ve been with a Malaysian for twenty years, visited Malaysia three times, ate many meals in Malaysian style restaurants, in NYC, LA and Kuala Lumpur. Pappa Rich is a chain restaurant, and a better than average one, that has now opened a modern eatery in Koreatown. Strikingly modern, with a long wooden floored interior, bold graphic signs and oversized photographs of Malaysian landmarks, the restaurant is attached to, and owned by a nightclub next door. The waiters, the customers, the vibe, all is young and fresh. That doesn’t mean, however, that the food is authentic or good. A tattoo on the arm does not mean the rice is moist, the shrimp flavorful, the roti canai any good. On the Saturday we ate there, around Noon, we were the only customers present. We ordered coffee which seemed to be made from a powdered packet(as they do in Asia), curry shrimp with rice and chicken satay. Our first impressions were the general paucity and small portions. The rice was a mound of dryness. While the sauces were good, the satay was just average. The tables are equipped with that very Korean touch, an electric button, to summon a waiter. The staff is friendly and attentive, and they even offered to introduce us to the Malaysian chef, whom we dishonestly complimented. As we ate, additional customers arrived, many college and post-collegiate, some from Malaysian, others from Ktown. They seemed to be enjoying the Malaysian food, which right now, is a rarity in LA. But if Malaysian food, which is some of the best in the world, truly comes to LA, let’s hope it can be made better than the average tastes at PR. Start with good rice, make it like it’s made in Malaysia, with coconut milk and pandan leaf.

Though it looks pretty white washed, I must say that the food was still pretty spectacular. Not that I’m so experienced with Malaysian food to begin with(actually only my second time hehe) but I was happy with the way my food turned out. I ordered the curry laksa noodle soup, and i was quite happy with it. The broth was just simply amazing, sweet but yet salty at the same time. Great portions too, i was stuffed by the end of it. We did order the garlic naan, we can do without that next time, wasn’t that great. At the end, the waiter brought over some of the pappa buns for us to try for free! so nice of them! We tried the milk and mocha one, in the middle there’s a bit of butter, it was a bit much for me but the b/f loved it. I did like the parts without the butter though, so soft and tasty, yummy!!! will definitely try to come back when i get a chance to! The reason I took a star off is that they don’t have personal parking, they have a «valet» but that’s technically shared with the weird karaōke/club place next door.
