As soon as I get fired from my current job, which should be any day now, I’m going to start my own«Hollywood Tours» company and set about taking people to every place in L.A. but Hollywood. We’ll start with Leimert Park, the soul of Los Angeles. Okay, so the«tour» will mostly consist of me driving a rusted out Ford Aerostar full of unsuspecting Japanese tourists to Papa West for Sunday bunch, but that’s why it’s important to read the fine print, okay? If you prefer rubbing your face all over Charlie Sheen’s piss soaked star then stay the fuck out of my van. Me and my new Japanese friends are going to enjoy an amazing jazz band, soul food, and just about the friendliest service you’ll find outside of the South. I can’t wait to return to Papa West and neither can my friends. They just don’t know it yet.

Loved it! Jazz is alive and well here. Why aren’t there more places where you can get dinner and a live show? The band was so fun! The food here is delicious. Fried it is, but overly greasy it is not. The service is great. Everyone was so welcoming. The chef came out afterwards to greet everyone. BYOB as they have no liquor license, which is not such a bad thing. Papa West, thanks for being around! We can’t wait to go back!

What a cute little spot! BF and I came on Sunday morning for brunch. Grits, turkey bacon, eggs, honey biscuit, coffee. Tasty for sure, fairly cheap, and GREATMUSIC. Papa West– apparently the«Ambassador of Leimert Park” — is the man. I would sooooo go back to PW’s. Perhaps next time I won’t be banished to the back corner of the upstairs loft with the card tables. That would make this joint a 5-star spot.

If you like Jazz you will love this place. The food is excellent and the music is great. So far I have only experienced the Sunday breakfast jazz sessions. If you go plan to listen and enjoy the music… the place is soooooooo small you will not be able to hear yourself or anyone else talk if the music is playing. But you won’t have time to talk because the food is so good.

I really love the vibe of Papa West. The food was pretty good, the atmosphere was just great and the décor is lively. I almost forgot about the great jazz!

I came to Papa West this past Friday nite with a group of friends. The food was very good. I had the friend catfish, mac n cheese with yams. I also had the fries, which were like the best fries I ahve ever had in all my days. :drools: The atmosphere was nice, we sat up top and was able to look down @ the performing band. It is BYOB with a $ 5.00 corkage fee, but all in all great. The service was a tad on the slow side, but the prices are good, and the portions are big. I will most certainly be back, if for nothing more… those fries…

The owner, Harold Weston rocks! Can a man be more accomodating and supportive of up and coming and independent jazz artists? I love Papa West. They want customers to feel as if they are at home. Well with BYOB(anything you like) for $ 5 corkage fee, I’m feeling pretty«at home» myself. But boozing aside, the ambience of Papa West is very comfortable, laid back, like grandma’s house on Sunday mornings. This is primarily a beakfast and lunch spot being that they close at 2pm, but Thursday through Saturday nights they are open nightly(till 11pm) for live music. That ‘s when the BYOB and good food set the party. They have healthy soul food, and delicious(and very rich) desserts. God bless mom and pop joints like Papa West. Unfortunately they are a lost tradition in Los Angeles…

I highly recommend Papa West for good food and jazz on a Sunday morning. It is located right in the heart of Leimert Park Village. I ordered the catfish with eggs and potatoes and enjoyed it very much. I sat upstairs with my wife and 4.5-month old son, and we had a great view of the musicians(drums, bass, and piano/vocals) who played jazz standards as we ate. I will definitely be going back, hopefully next time with some more friends. The owner, Harold Weston, told me to bring my sax next time. I guess they are friendly to jazz musicians who want to sit in.
