This place was very good when it was at the smaller location. The guys that ran it were always nice to me! When I was pregnant with my youngest, Ooh how I craved the tips and they’d always hook me up! So sorry this location didn’t make it.

I liked the food, although it was a bit too expensive. The customer service can be better too. All in all, I’d go back because the rib tips were on hit!

This place has excellent pancakes. A nice sit down spot in the hood. Hours of operation should be more consistent!

The ribs are stupid good and the barbecue sauce is off the hook! The only reason why I’m giving this place four stars and not 5 is that I think they should give you more ribs for the price. I’ll definitely be going back the next time I’m in the area!

Upside: The BBQ sauce is top notch. The meat is always tender and well cooked. The fried chicken will make you slap your mama. The homemade Cakes, omgoodness, heated up, stop it, its like grannies kitchen. Pound cake galore. Downside: Hours of operation suck. Sides are suspect Customer service 50⁄50. On the whole: If you are craving BBQ like the ones you go to on summer days at your families backyard functions this is the joint. Breakfast is good(when they are open) Don’t expect thrills and frills but your stomach will totally appreciate it.

Food like grandma & grandaddy cook! Amazing! I love their entire menu especially the smoked wings! I frequent this location because the food is great and the service is timely and friendly. I have tried pretty much all nonpork breakfast items except the red velvet pancakes. Great booths & décor that is historical & nostalgic. We love this place & the great bar-b-que sauce! It is also great that as you enter and exit they have a sign that says No Sagging!!! Community improvement begins at home and it tastes great!

First off, I love giving my money to black owned businesses in my community. I can say that they have great food here but the customer service is terrible. I kept picking up bad vibes from my waitress, she had a very stank attitude for no apparent reason. I would give them one star, that’s how bad her attitude was, but the food was what gained them two. I can’t allow her ugly ways to deter me from eating here again, so maybe next time I’ll call my order in and order take out. But I guess when eating in the«hood» you’re bound to come across some stank attitudes.

Good ribs! Limited selection on their sides. But a solid choice. Sauce was a little bland, and lacked depth. Friendly service, nice décor.

***CASHONLY**** Cute and clean joint. Breakfast hours are from 7am-2pm, but don’t make the same mistake I did by coming at exactly 7am… doors didn’t open until a quarter after 7 and our waitress wasn’t too happy about our arrival time. She was very attentive though, and kinda warmed up to us eventually. The food is great and fresh, but nothing worth driving out of your way to get to. Besides my biscuit, everything was cooked perfectly. #6BEEFHOTLINK, SCRAMBLEDEGGS, HASHBROWNS:(3.5 stars) The hot link was cooked just to my liking with a nice char on it. Eggs were not dry at all. Hash browns had a nice crust on the outside from the flat top. Not overly greasy, cooked just right. # 7CORNEDBEEFHASH, SUNNYSIDEUPEGGS, HOMESTYLEPOTATOES:(3.5 stars) Once again, cooked perfectly. Nice crust on the corned beef hash. Sunny side up eggs weren’t greasy or slimy. Homestyle potatoes were delicious!!! REDVELVETPANCAKE:(3.75 stars) Flavors rushed straight to the taste buds!!! Delicious… clever and tasty twist to pancakes. The dollop of cream cheese was just awesome. A bit on the dry side but delicious nonetheless. BISCUIT:(2 stars) Dry and cold… sad face. Was more like a dense, flour packed dinner roll. If I’m in the area and not pressed for time, I might come back to try out other menu items!!!

So I came across Old Fashion Flavor from a Unilocal friend who wrote a pretty good review for them, however my experience was much different. I loooooooove me some down home breakfast so i decided to give this place a shot. 1st.. . This place is small, it only seats a capacity of 25 people and I think that’s pushing it. 2nd.. . it’s NOT toddler friendly. I brought my 2 year old son and 3 year old little niece with me and when I asked for a high chair and a booster seat they didn’t have neither one. «Not a good look» . FOOD — I ordered the French toast breakfast with a side of grits, everything was alright but the grits, they were to thick and a little dry. Almost uneatable. They also sale the beverages by the can so you know that means NOREFILLS. So every time you want more to drink you need to buy another can, «NOT A GOODLOOK» Overall would I eat here again? HECKNO!!! The food was just alright and not to mention this business has been running for 3 years, there should be NO reason why they haven’t invested in a high chair or booster seats for families that being their kids.

three words: red velvet cupcakes. Do you want to know the delicious taste explosion that happens when a cupcake truck and a pancake truck run into each other? well you need to go to Old Fashion Flavor Restaurant. They are rich, tasty, and worth your time. I can only comment on breakfast/brunch and not the BBQ. Their food overall was well priced and delicious. Interestingly everything seem to have exact prices(like $ 10.01) rather than rounding it off. This made it easy to combine any of the food items off the side menu. I really enjoyed their catfish as it was well breaded and the fish as still tender. The staff was very friendly and split the bill into individual checks. I would love to come back and try the BBQ.

The ribs(no sauce) were out of this world. Nicely seasoned, not overpowering. The meat deserves 4 ½ stars. The sauce and the potato salad, not so much! I don’t know what it is about the sauce, but it’s just not good. Two people recommended Old Fashioned to me and they both said«just don’t get the sauce» and they were right. The potato salad taste like they dumped it out of a store bought container not bothering to doctor it up to help the flavor. Overall, i’ll definitely be back, because like I previously stated the meat is AWESOME! Hopefully, they take these reviews as constructive criticisms and improve on certain things like the potato salad & sauce, because they are friendly people with great product.

This place has the best BBQ in LAHANDSDOWN. I’ve tried Woodys(bit chewy, often fatty meats), Phillips(not enough meat on the bone and a tad tough) and this place rules the roost. When I walked into Old Fashioned Flavor BBQ I was instantly impressed by the massive slow cook grills that circle the restaurant and the old-school decorations that adorn the lobby(Butter churns, an old cash register, etc). I was even more impressed when the owner and chef told me of his Q’ologist(BBQ scientist) heritage. He can trace the legacy of his slow-cooked delicious meats all the way back to the 30’s! On to the best part, the food — we ordered a slab of pork ribs, sauce on the side, and a pint of baked beans. The meat on the rib was so tender and flavorful that I don’t think we ever touched the sauce. In the baked beans, there were peppers and pieces of smoked sausage which was heavenly. I had never tasted meat so tender and flavorful — and to top it off — he let us sample the«naked burger» — a slow grilled burger patty that was so flavorful by itself that it didn’t need lettuce, ketchup, or tomatoes. This is definitely my new rib joint in Los Angeles. Sure, the neighborhood is probably not the best — but it is well worth the journey if you’re looking for some great BBQ.

As I walked up to Old Fashioned Flavor, I figured the barbecue would be tops. There are three huge smokers outside, the most I’ve seen in one place. On a small deck, under the shade of an awning sits a small round table with two chairs. Inside the restaurant, there’s just enough room for a table, a bar stool, and some antiques. The latter are there not so much for decoration as they are for temporary storage. It’s the most charming barbecue restaurant I’ve been to. After considering the menu for a moment, I ordered the combination of pork spare ribs and brisket, sauce on the side, with a side of beans and potato salad. Two slices of white bread are included, naturally. The meats were obviously smoked by a master, but by the time I made my order, they had dried out. The ribs were still edible, but the brisket was so tough and dry I only took one bite. That was tragic, since the meats were smokey but not overwhelming, seasoned with just the right amount salt and the smallest hint of sugar(they take a minimalist approach here, using nothing else for the dry rub), and excess fat had been carefully trimmed off. What a waste! Neither of the sides were particularly good. The beans are thick and flavored with their barbecue sauce, which is a lackluster combination of tomato sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, green peppers, and cayenne. The sauce is on the thicker, reddish end of the spectrum. I dipped a rib into the sauce, which seemed to make both taste worse. Tried it with the bread to no avail. The potato salad is that mass produced yellow gunk. Why do so few barbecue restaurants make good side dishes? Just as I was leaving, it looked like the pit master was getting one of the smokers ready. That was around 4:30, which means ribs would be done around 8:30 — 9:00. Maybe that’s the magic hour. I’ll try again for dinner.

As I was comin home, this place caught my eye, and the smell of bbq caught my senses! Came in and ordered a hot link sandwich for the road. As I chatted with the owner and his wife, he gave me a pork rib w/out sauce to try. The rib was fantastic!!! Cooked perfectly, nice n meaty, and nicely seasoned! It didn’t need sauce. The sandwich was great. The link was nice n spicy! This place had total hospitality despite its look! I really wanna come back n try one of their combos! They plan to open a full service place a block away on 106th n Crenshaw. A winner in my book!!!
