This store is great for silk and wool fabrics. They have some very nice wool sweater knits. I even found a cashmere fabric that was beautiful and super soft. The employees are very nice. Don’t be afraid to barter with them.

Highly recommended! Morad was very nice and helpful. Found exactly what I was looking for. Reasonably priced as well!

OK, so you really need to look at the 1st picture on Unilocal to find this place. I would not have found it otherwise. There is no Morad Fabrics on the outside, it just says Fabrics — Fabrics. When you walk in, it is literally floor to ceiling full of fabric. I already had something in mind so I just directly asked them for where those silk were located. They had to show me a little bit more since it’s so overwhelming. But I ended up buying China silk at $ 10 a yard. Parking is on the street and on 9th St, it’s $ 1 per 10 minutes on the meter, so plan accordingly.

After a long afternoon of pounding the pavement in search of natural fibers, I stumbled in here and found Natural Fiber Mecca. Everything in this store is nicely cared for and their most popular silks(charmeuse, dupioni, organza, georgette) is clearly labeled in cubbies against the left wall. I found beautiful dupioni and shantung for a GREAT price and while looking around I fell in love with a diaphanous white batiste and asked the gentleman to tell me more about it. It was a cotton/silk blend and I could hardly believe it when he said I could have it for $ 7 a yard! When I was finishing up I eyed a scrap of cotton iridescent lace on the table and asked how much, and he just tossed it in my bag. I commented how frustrated I was that everyone else that day tried to sell me polyester dupioni and she laughed and shook his head. I didn’t even feel the need to burn a sample of the fabrics because the hand was so great. Later on I burned a bit because I got my swatches mixed, and sure enough it charred and crumbled like a champ. My final product was smooth and crisp without fiber failure, which can sometimes be a problem in old crusty silk. Not here! I have been tossing out his business cards to all of my friends and will never go anywhere else in the District looking for natural fibers again!

This is THE only store in downtown LA that has the best quality of silks and linens in so many selections it’s hard to keep count. They have awesome prints that are original artwork so I don’t have to worry about getting sued which is a plus! The best part is, if I ever need more, they can order the exact same dye lot which is more than I can say for Michael Levine’s which got my order wrong 3 times! Morad is a bit feisty, but has a funny sense of humor once you get to know him, and best of all he is honest. I am a true fan and have become a very loyal customer.

Best selection of top quality silks in the District. Don’t expect to pay basement prices for his fabrics. You wont find a better selection of silk organza, crêpe de chine downtown, I tried. Prices are very fair for the quality of product.

I’ve been shopping at this store for close to ten years. The fabrics and selection here are second to none, these guys know there stuff and are incredibly honest. They can be a bit brusque when it’s busy, but on many a day they’ve taken plenty of time to not only give me outstanding customer service, but a better education than I’ve gotten in my textile classes. Their prices are fair — don’t expect that your low-ball offer that would fly next door will go over well with them, but these are NOT the fabrics you find elsewhere in the district. These gentlemen carry some of the best around. Fair, natural fibers, and excellent hand and drape to their fabrics. I’ve never regretted a single purchase I’ve made there, their shop is about the only place I go to in the district these days.

Aside from Michael Levine’s, according to other merchants in the Fashion District Fabrics & Fabrics is the only other place that sells real silk. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories of fashion district merchants passing off polyester as silk. When my friend and i went there was a really pretty bolt of patterned silk on display. The shopkeeper told me it was Pucci silk and quoted me $ 14.50 a yard. I spent a long time looking at it sidewise and fingering the threads(no Pucci watermark, though I later learned that Pucci does not sell watermarked fabric anywhere.) Shopkeeper seemed pretty indignant and kind of amused that I was skeptical and would not haggle with me(my fault, I lowballed too hard.) «How long have you shopped in the fashion district?» he asked me. «I have been in this industry for 50 years. I would not be able to be in this business for this long if I was not honest.» He was kind of condescending about it, asking me if this was my first trip to the district(no) and how old I was, etc. I think he could tell I was a newbie at the fabric burning test. Finally, he said: «Tell you what, I will burn it for you myself. If it is fake, i will give it to you for free.» So he burned it, and it looked real. Still skeptical, I bought four yards, went home, and burned some myself. Yes, it is real silk. I felt like a real dick, even though it is important to be skeptical in the fashion district. It was not the friendliest transaction, but this store is absolutely legit(at least that one bolt…) and it had a gorgeous selection!

The sign reads«Fabrics Fabrics», and they currently have a yellow banner hanging that reads«The Biggest Selection in Silk Linens & Wools». I’ve been shopping at this place for years. They really do have an excellent selection of natural fiber fabrics. While they may not have the absolutely lowest prices you can possibly find– you may not be able to find the fabric they have anywhere else in town. And, I find their prices _very_reasonable. The staff also knows their stock well. They were the only place that had the fabrics I needed last weekend. I needed very high quality garment weight cotton sateen– even Michael Levine’s didn’t carry it. But Morad had it! At only $ 8 a yard! I was thinking I was going to have to cave and order what I needed from an online store at $ 20+ per yard. So, a big savings there. Also, they didn’t bat an eyelash when I paid with American Express. That was great. Many merchants downtown prefer Visa or Mastercard, or are ‘Cash Only’.

Another of many fabric stores in the Garment District packed wall to wall with bolts. Their business card says that they specialize in silk, linen, and wool. I like that they have English net in various colors. I also saw some beautiful burnt velvets that were around $ 10 a yard. I’ll make sure to stop by again when I have a specific sewing project in mind.
