I never knew Barnsdall Park had a lot to offer. On top of the hill of Barnsdall Park lies Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. This museum is surrounded by the Hollyhock House, art centers, theater, as well as view of the Hollywood Hills and parts of LA. Came here a few months ago to check out the Juxtapoz and Robert Williams exhibit. This museum is quite small amongst it’s peers in the greater LA area. The museum was built in the 1950’s as reflective in it’s roof waffled framed formwork that was popular during the 50’s era. Definitely worth a visit if you’re at Barnsdall Park anyways. Why not, it’s free!

I’ve heard of the Juxtapoz exhibition, but had no idea it was here at Barnsdall Art Park. I stopped by to see the Frank Lloyd Wright house, but unfortunately they were closed today. Being an explorer that I am, I randomly walked into this building not realizing that it was an art gallery. I love contemporary art especially street art so I was really pleased to find this place. It was quite larger than I expected. They had pieces from several local art galleries including some pieces by Sheppard Fairey. If you love contemporary art, I recommend a visit before the exhibition ends later this month. Admission is free and is worth a visit. Don’t forget to take a look at the gorgeous view of city near the Hollyhock House. Bring a picnic basket and a book for relaxing day at the park. With only a couple Unilocal reviews, this«hidden gem» of a museum needs to be discovered!

Slang Aesthetics is an amazing exhibition! I had the pleasure of paying a visit recently and it is worth sharing! The gallery is located on top of a hill that is also a park that overlooks Hollywood and DTLA but from a far. There are so many trees and shade, it was such a lovely place to relax and take a nap.(The park, not the gallery) The gallery is quite large with two main rooms and a few smaller ones. It was 88 degrees in Hollywood on my visit so the air conditioning felt great! It wasn’t too cold, it was just at a comfortable temperature. The most unique quality about Slang Aesthetics is the mini essays that accompany some of the illustrations. It was a nice vacation not having to deconstruct and find meaning, instead insight was already given and I could just make the connection. I really enjoyed having access to the intention of the artist. The woman that worked the front desk was very social. She was very welcoming and was conversing with multiple visitors. When I was walking to another part of the gallery it was a nice sight to see that conversations were allowed within the gallery. It was a relaxed mood! After enjoying man made art, I took a walk around the park and enjoyed nature’s art. I really appreciated my visit and I am visiting again before the exhibition closes.
