I have been a fan of LACE since it was located downtown and they asked me to MC an Art Auction for Valentine’s Day, many many years ago, when Mark Palley was the Director. The theme was ‘food ’ and I was the food hot shot in those days(too long ago to bring up) but i will ALWAYS remember Lita Albuquerque’s ‘star fish’ made from tabbouleh grains. It was a thing of beauty. NOWLACE has moved to Hollywood Blvd and Sara Russin is the Director, having come from Otis Art School. And she is more than well qualified, she is also a dynamic leader who has a real vision for LACE-I could see that immediately from the type of people she had working as Interns(young Art Students but so well qualified) to the exhibit of students at the Los Angeles High School for the Arts. t-you should have seen the handcuffs which were SCULPTED, they were Pottery, actually they were shackles Sara told me. There were also students interpretations of 6o’s Psychedelic posters-since I was quite alive(and actually aware) during the period, I was both amused and impressed by the vision these youngsters have. Since LACE has been thru MANY ‘incarnations’ and many of these were on the wrong road(in my opinion), what Sara is doing now rings so true and is so authentic in its concept and direction that I cannot help but say HOORAY! YOUGOGIRL! kudos to whomever had the foresight to hire her-great things are in store I am sure. I just read a few of the reviews: when LACE was formed in the late 70’s I did not realize it was to support the Chicano community; my auctioneering was about l981 so it was still a YOUNG institution. Now it has expanded (duh) and it stands as both a testimony to the history of the art scene in LA and the future of what it could become.

I went to LACE to support my boss Jeff Cain’s art opening. That night was very interesting. I love the atmosphere of the place and the vibe of the people from the gallery opening. There was a bar and some appetizers for people to snack on. The place was crowed the night of the opening and there was drunken artists everywhere(i thought it was awesome). haha. The show was intriguing to me as there was variety of visions and art styles and controversies. I much prefer LACE of places like LACMA and MOCA(but I do still go to these place for the art, not so much the people). Anyways back to LACE, during the opening I was able to interact with the artworks without being told that I was too close to it. I was able to talk to the artists and get a better understanding of their ideas, concepts, and struggles. I am now subscribed on the newsletter and get updates as to what’s going on with LACE.

A little gem on Hollywood Blvd. Worth a stop in to see what exhibits are currently up. A nice respite from the grit and tourists on Hollywood Blvd. Yes, there is culture in L.A. — even at its grimiest and glitziest. Super cool, disturbing, cartoony exhibit of blue ooze invading your life in the back of the museum. Worth a stop in alone to check this out for a few minutes. Entrance fee is pay what you wish.

LACE Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, I hit up their silent auction last night but I didn’t come home with anything. I appreciate Contemporary Art to a point, and some of these pieces were good. However, those pieces seemed to be polarized by other works that could not hold their own. As with any art form or anything for that matter you will have good and not so good. That said, the not so good should not have been at this reception.

what?! how come no one has reviewed LACE yet? are Unilocalers not very art oriented? it makes me sad to think it’s true. nestled smack dab in the middle of hollyweird, LACE is an independent, non-profit venue. it has been promoting visual arts since 1978 presenting the work of over 5000 artists in over 3,000 programs and events. that’s a whole lot of art folks! draped in white walls, and featuring open spaces, the venue is partitioned into three sections. the first is the reception area that also doubles as exposition space, this is followed by the second and most spacious of the three sections: a vast open space that not only hosts art around its walls but serves as visual performance space. third and last section is an open space that serves mainly as a gallery and post show reception area. overall there are many genres of visual arts in place at LACE ranging from photography to paint, to sculpture of many different materials among other things. the staff is friendly and serviceable. most programming is free or low cost enhancing the exposure of all exhibitions towards the public. LACE offers membership at many entry levels and all memberships receive benefits including free admission to the galleries and special programs, advance notice of exhibitions and special events, and discounts at select businesses and vendors. support your art community!

Founded in 1978 by a group of 13 artists – mostly from the Chicano community and the Otis Art Institute – this grassroots, not-for-profit contemporary visual arts center encourages artistic research and serves as a forum for artists and their audiences.
