They are not«closed»; I just submitted a correction and we’ll see if it takes. These folks have been at the City Hall farmer’s market for years. They only sell at farmer’s markets. I love their baguettes and walnut raisin bread. They lose points for selling croissants in little plastic bags, but I understand why: they are not an indoor bakery. I used to work at City Hall; for the sake of my waistline, I’m grateful I no longer see them each week. Grateful, but not happy. By the way, this farmer’s market has had to move a couple of times over the years, so if you don’t see it, just look around.

«Bonjour… comment ca va?» …Uhhh… buenos dias??? The french vendor on the corner of 1st and Main in Downtown LA is known as «La Boulangerie». It’s not a restaurant, or café, or even a small pastierrie nook. No. It’s a tent. A tent. A tent stocked full of delicious pastries and baked goods from the heavens!!! And, if it weren’t authentic or homemade enough, the french vendor will pleasantly greet you with an unexpected«bonjour!» to start your day. It made me want to speak french right back. Problem is, I don’t speak a lick of it. So I go with the next foreign tongue that I actually know. But I was a little thrown off and got stage fright. Regardless, as Freddy Soto once said. The pastries are tasty. Not the best french pastries I’ve had, but quite satisfying and full of variety. Danishes of all types of fruit: pear, coconut, apple, raspberry, cherry, custard. Croissants are butter, cocoa-filled pastries or ham ‘n cheese. And baguettes and artisan loaves galore for your pleasure. Prices are not steep, not super cheap, but just right. The tent is only open on Thursdays, though, as it is a vendor for the Thursday Farmer’s Market. And get there early for the best selection. Down the line, I’ll be sure to get a baguette, some cured ham and delicious brie, and I’ll be set for lunch as well. C’est magnifique!(thanks Jacqo)
