As many times as I’ve been on the block, sadly I’ve only seen one exhibit at Known Gallery and I’m attempting to correct that. I go next door a lot as my friends work at Supreme but I’m usually trying to get out of there asap as it can get hectic. I recently attended the Project Blitz sneaker retrospective and it was great. It was like a history lesson from back in the day before all the hype that comes with today’s rare and hard to find sneakers. They had everything. Too many to name. Too many to list. Just know it was great and deserved all the respect it got. The space isnt too wide but it goes back to the far wall a good amount, so it’s a decent sized gallery. I will make sure not to miss out on all the works and showings that will be displayed in this space in the future.

Great art space. Came out here for an art show opening for Tatiana Suarez, Lady Mags and Amandalynn — their show was called SEELIFE. The place was so beautifully set up you almost felt as if you were underwater along with all those sexy beautiful paintings and drawings of mermaids. This gallery is big, open space, has high ceilings. Parking on the side of the street.

Given the location(the newly hipster/formerly predominantly Jewish neighborhood on Fairfax), it is shocking to find an art gallery with such a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. The artists that show here are extremely relevant, and well known in the art scene. Which only adds to my astonishment that the feel is so laid back. There is nothing more annoying than having a curator/salesman all over you as you wander a gallery, but here they stay back and let you admire at your own pace. There is a small exhibit room in the back, to accommodate a second artist and for all of my visits I felt the works complemented one another well. The only drawback is that I have never seen prints for sale, only originals. Which means if you see something you like you would have to buy the original, and that tends to be pretty expensive. Maybe this is part of why this gallery is so nice though? Anyway, this is a cultural gem of LA.

The thing that always gets us amped about this gallery is its pristine white floor. I’ve never seen such a floor before. It’s electric!

Great layout for a gallery. Wide open spaces, smaller rooms in the back for featuring multiple artists or collections. The types of artists they show are usually street art/graffiti types or more modern artists. Opening nights can be tough to get into unless you’re on a list; a lot of popular artists open there and everyone is trying to get in, so it’s common to see a long line of people waiting and other people just coming up to the front and getting in because they’re on a list. Sign up for the email newsletter and you’ll probably get early notice of how to RSVP to get into opening receptions.

love this gallery! don’t let the size fool you… there’s actually two back rooms with more art and an office upstairs with some pieces as well by Retna and Augustine Kofie to name a few(although you may need permission or need to purchase a print/piece to be taken up to the office area). as for the exhibits and etc, the gallery showcases lots of great contemporary artists as well as graffiti artist from tagging crews like AWR(artists will rise, art work rebels) and MSK(mad society kings). i’ve seen works by Retna, Risk, Push… to name a few as well as a myriad of other amazing artists. it’s really fun to discover new artists and gazing at inspiring pieces of work. i also love their freebies(Frank151 mini books, magnets, postcards… etc) that they have available sometimes during the exhibits. they also provide nice exhibit guides with pictures of each piece including info about the piece and pricing. one downside though is that the exhibits tend to be late at night and start around 8pm or so… which can be a drag if you don’t have time during the evening to drop by. nevertheless, the gallery is great with friendly staff. i love looking foward to each exhibit and am seldomly disappointed by the pieces.

Stumbled onto this gallery on our way to Supreme, it was really fresh and consisted mostly of street and modern art. Definitely a must see while we head out to Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Fairfax area never ceases to amaze me, always a treat…

«Insideout» is Steve Harrington’s new exhibit at Known Gallery, it represents the artist’s journey of discovery, while creating a similar voyage for visitors, allowing the dialogue between artist and viewer to continue as layers of meaning and understanding are added to this thought-provoking collection. New works of art including recent paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures reveal months of unearthing and exploring. The project marks the third collaboration between Harrington and Generic Surplus this year.

These guys brought the street art scene back to Los Angeles. Ever since they’ve been having their artist showcases everyone including the LA times the MOCA and not to forget the WALLSTREETJOURNAL have been paying attention to street art. how about just calling it art?! Great gallery to visit. Awesome place to be on opening nights as all of hollywood. Peep the area surrounding now yo. Everything has turned into a wannabe Known Gallery. Places are popping up like zits on a teenager. Stay true… visit!

Maybe it’s just ’cause I used to take the f-ing bus up this stretch to get to Melrose when I was a kid, but I adore the renaissance in this area — now there’s food-art and there’s art-art, so… I happened to be out for my birthday, getting dinner at Animal(that would be the food art) and on my way out, I ran into an old family friend of mine. Turns out, this talented one is running his own art gallery like right next door with his amazing gal! So, this is the art art part… I was privileged to enter with my friends and see a show staging in process. The space is really large and spacey — they had just installed white glossy lino and the walls seemed sky high. It looked super clean and showcased the art in the most focused, logical way. But artistically… you know what I mean! So many talented people hanging out, considering, looking, working — art! Well it just so happens that the featured artist is the amazing Patrick Martinez! His stuff is so amazing and we got a preview peek. The gallery was going all out to showcase some amazing art. Bravo! The bottom line is If you want to see some great up and coming artists in a friendly and open space, definitely visit Known Gallery. Great artists and curators and a welcoming vibe.

Maybe it’s favoritism, but Known Gallery is my spot. I’ve only attended opening nights, but opening nights at a gallery are the best. This particular gallery isn’t the size of LACMA so it can get a little stuffy on opening night. It’s a private one, but shows some really good shit in there, let me tell you. On opening nights, the artists, which are mainly graff artists come out, socialize and enjoy free drinks as well as spectators. There’s no cover charge for getting in which is nice, and the art is always spectacular. The parking is a bit sketchy and you might have to talk a small distance to get to the gallery. Around the area behind all the stores is a residential area you have to scope and find parking. It’s not too bad though. But the area in which Known is located is pretty superb. Right next door is Supreme and a bunch of eateries and dope shops.

Known Gallery gives all the focus to the artwork and artist(s) every time I have seen an exhibition. Known Gallery is the blank canvas while the artwork is the paint. This gallery is simple and to the point, which is the art. Between an opening night for a new exhibition or a regular Wednesday afternoon, it has been a good experience. Opening nights tend to get crowded but they do serve wine. The thing about opening nights is that, since there is limited space to move freely, looking at each art piece might be a challenge. Either experience will be great no matter what, just depends on preference. My advice would be: 1. If you like to socialize, definitely attend opening nights. 2. If you want a more intimate look at the individual pieces, then go on a regular day.(Hours may vary)

One word, FRESH! Came here for the Eric Haze and Stussy S/S 2010 collaborative collection. The artwork was simple, raw, and everything that graffiti means to me. The gallery was large, spacious, white walls, and clean. Can’t wait to go back for another exhibit!
