I will always support local restaurants. No fuzz — just great food. And very affordable.

Authentic, delicious, flavorful, and hits the spot! I really enjoyed the huaraches with carne Asada on tops and the agua frescas are refreshing without being too sweet. I mixed pineapple and lemon together it was outstanding!

For the quality and portions of their food, this place is great! The menu inside is very comprehensive and expansive, but my favorite is their tortas. For $ 3, they’re plenty filling – get the pastor torta, very flavorful. Their tacos are also quite sizeable and only $ 1 as opposed to a bit pricier at neighboring trucks. I highly recommend as my boyfriend and I both got full off of $ 12 worth of food. Also really love their salsas here! In addition, the place is clean and has seating both inside and outside. Cash only, but they have an atm inside in the back. Parking is hard to come by on the street and so we’ve typically had to take our food to go. Now the reason why I docked a star: they have a phone number listed on Unilocal, but it just incessantly rings. At first I thought that they must’ve just had the wrong number listed, but realized when I was physically waiting for my food inside that they just ignore the phone while it rings. I don’t understand how you could just let it ring… So basically don’t count on being able to call in an order. Also, when ordering for to go at the counter, they told me to pay at the end and that they would tell me when my order was done. 15 minutes later and a bunch of people have left with their orders and I’m still clearly waiting until I finally ask if my order is done. Apparently it was done for a while, but no one cared to notify me. I just wish the customer service was better, but what can you do…

Ordered the Huarache with nopales coupled with the pina drink. Outstanding. They weren’t too amused when I asked for a huarache to go, colsones and a chancla.

So they revamped the place since last time I was in highland park. This is definitely a lot nicer then it use to be. The décor is hipsterfied now, but the flavor remains the same. Great spot.

You know what a huarache is? It’s a sope… A sope who got married & just let herself go. If you come here and don’t order a huarache, you’re doing it wrong. Make it a super huarache at that along with an agua fresca. It’s a good combo after some drinks on the Blvd. Famous for their huaraches and probably nothing else though so don’t order anything else. You can probably get a better burrito, torta, pambazo elsewhere. It took a very long time to receive my order the last time I was there. Your Homegirl, Violy

The food is delicious. I ordered a tostada de tinga and my bf ordered a huarache. The tostada de tinga is made of chipotle, chicken and onions. The huarache is an oval tortilla with your choice of meat, beans, sour cream, guacamole, lettuce, onions, red or green mexican sauce. The service sucks though, the workers have a bad very attitude, they’re SLOW, disorganized and it takes a long time to get your food. No ticket, no number is given after you oder, you don’t know what yo do after ordering your food. Not the best palce to eat.

Stopped by here to pick up a quick dinner to-go around 5pm last week. The restaurant was pretty full but I was able to order at the front as soon as I was ready. I was headed to a friends place so I ordered a lot of food in case they wanted some. 1 Super Huarache with carne asada, 1 Torta with pastor, and 2 tacos, 1 asada, 1 pastor. I also got a large Pina which was delicious with real pineapple bits clogging up the straw. Everything was pretty good. Meats were pretty flavorful and the smokey red salsa went very well with the carne asada. Nothing mindblowing but definitely worth a stop.

While many of the Mexican restaurants I visit have since replaced their $ 1 tacos with $ 1.25 or $ 1.50 tacos, at Huarache Azteca, the $ 1 taco survives in its purest form. For exactly $ 1, you get a delicious authentic Mexican taco with your choice of meat. My recommendations are the cabeza and carne asada. If I’m dining in, I like to order the huarache, which consists of your usual meat and toppings served on a crisp oval-shaped tortilla. While it shares a lot of similarities to a taco, the real differentiator is the crisp tortilla, which works so well when you pair it with their tender cabeza or barbacoa. It can get messy, so it’s best eaten with a fork and knife. Since its renovation, Huarache Azteca is no longer that hole-in-the-wall place that many people have come to know it as, but fortunately, it still has the same authentic Mexican flavor at a hole-in-the-wall price.

Pro — big portions and low price! :) Con — need more flavor to it but big portions make up for it though. Overall — To be honest. I was originally going to use the restroom but I feel guilty of using restroom without buying anything. So I bought something to eat there. I was surprised how big the portions was. It taste good but need more flavor though. So if you looking for low price and big portions, I recommend going over there. You will not be disappointed.

El Huarache Azteca is a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant along a busy street. It’s known for the huarache(think of an Indian naan bread with meat and other condiments resting on top). I ordered mine with carne asada and would certainly order it again and again. I don’t usually order beverages at restaurants, but I was willing to make an exception here. Their homemade drinks are really refreshing and I definitely recommend the cucumber and lemon. Overall if you’re grabbing food or a quick drink you’ll be satisfied with everything here. :)

The food was great! We all ordered huaraches and nachos! Everything very tasty and delicious. Why 3 stars? Service was very regular, not that friendly… Maybe we just got them at the end of the day and people gets tired, but oh well a kind service always makes the difference. They forgot to put one of the adds I ordered and when I asked they just ignored me. Not cool! It also took TOO long to get the food. Would I be back? Yes! Because food was amazeballs.

I’ve been coming to this establishment for years. The food has always been amazing and so was the service . What happened ?! The service is now just awful !! Not only is it all disorganized but you have hired young staff that is incompetent. Advice to the management … Hire people that want to work and know a thing or two about service.

Amazing authentic Mexican food. Flavors were on point, service was quick and friendly much like my like dealing with my abuelita or tia. I had the chilaquiles con huevo and I absolutely loved how crunchy my chilaquiles were. Most places drench the chips in salsa and it ends up being a soup. This place had the chips to salsa ratio down. There were into two complaints which i won’t hold against them because it’s really minor. 1) the amount of tables outside was sad because when I have food this amazing sometimes eating outdoors with your agua freaca is what I wanna do. I was able to eat my outside but I almost didn’t because there were only four. 2) if you’re eating there, like I did as opposed to eating it elsewhere, then you’re told to take a seat and pay when done. When I’m done eating and already entering the food coma last thing I wanna do is go back inside stand in line again and pay. Once I’m done I just wanna clean up my mess and get the hell on. Thanks, Huaraches Azteca! I loved you guys and I will definitely be back again.

THISREVIEWISFORFOODONLY. The food at Huarache Azteca is pure GOLD. Delicious, authentic, and extremely affordable. Tacos for $ 1??? Yes please. I’ve been coming here for years, and the food has always been consistently great. Even after the recent remodel, I didn’t notice any change in quality or price of the food! Amazing. You really can’t go wrong with anything. Huaraches, sopes, quesadillas, tacos, tortassss, oh man. TIPSFORHUNGRY + IMPATIENTPEOPLE: What I’ve learned from experience is you go in to this place and take charge. Go up and ask for a menu, track someone down and make them take your order, ask the kitchen if your food is taking too long, go up and have someone charge you for your food. Now, this is no way to run a restaurant, but it’s really rhe only way it works(for me). Service is negative stars, to be honest, and it always has been. However, if you can look past the horrendous lack of organization and are okay with waiting a good while for amazing, cheap food, PLEASE check this place out! Also, Huarache, if you need customers to hook you up with some management advice, don’t be afraid to ask! I’m sure A LOT of us have suggestions to help your establishment run smoother and more efficiently.

We used to really like his place but in spite of he revamped interior, it has slid downhill faster than the diarrhea induced by the food. Awful service, crazy long wait times for your food. Forget swigging back horchata – make sure you end the meal with a strong dose of Pepto-Bismal.

Hands down, this is the greatest spot in Highland Park for Mexican food. I had the special this time around — It was Barbacoa with a Consume, tortillas and cilantro/onions and it was great. Usually I just get tacos and each kind of meat that I’ve tried has been cooked just right. Really really good stuff and they’re literally $ 1. Also they have a variety of fresh juices, always get a juice. This place has been a staple for almost 2 decades and I think they’ve adapted to the changing gentrification of Highland park in a smart way. The interior has definitely been updated recently but they didn’t attempt to reinvent the wheel. Why ruin a good thing? It’s got an unpretentious, clean aesthetic the way it looks in there and the staff are all very nice. I like that you can go in there and there’s families there, the guy and his date, working dudes on break, old folks, kids, yuppies and scruffy white boys like me. At one point there was an old guy that looked like he lived on the streets a while and someone brought him a to-go container of food which was nice. You get the feeling that people that grew up here know it well. It’s a neighborhood institution and I hope it never goes away.

Sabor! High-quality ingredients and a consistently tasty food. This is one of the best restaurants in the area and one of the best Mexican food restaurants in Los Angeles. It looks nice inside after the recent remodel too. My favorites are the super huarache with both sauces, jamaica, and the asada burrito with rojo sauce.

They’ve recently remodeled to keep up with the changes in the neighborhood and the place looks great! The food, however, is the best it’s ever been. I love that the place is family owned and operated. The huaraches are so good but anything they make with their fresh masa is great. Tortas are also sooooo good! The bread is light and fluffy but slightly toasted just how I like it. This isn’t a fast food place. The food is fresh and made to order so wait a little. Remember you’re in a neighborhood spot so be respectful when you come in. Oh. And they sell their aguas frescas for parties too!

I’ve had this place bookmarked for a long time, since I discovered they offer huitlacoche, which is basically corn infected with fungus. It’s usually mixed with cheese and served in quesadillas, tamales, and huaraches. It has a wonderful earthy flavor. It’s why I chose this spot to meet my friend for dinner. After dealing with the confusion of where to order(my friend and I had been sitting at a table for a good 10 minutes and no one came to take our order, so went to the cashier, only to be told that they would come to our table), I asked for the huarache with huitlacoche and was told they were out. So… I asked for flor de calabaza(squash blossom). And… they were out of that too. In fact, the only vegetarian option was potato. What?! Very frustrating. We weren’t too hungry so we ended up just sharing chips and guacamole. The chips were greasier than they should have been and not salty enough. They didn’t even give us salsa with the chips, now that I think about it. No one came to give us a receipt. It was like they forgot even though our table was in plain view of the register. We paid at the cash register. I asked about the menu and was told that yes, usually they have those items but sometimes, they run out. Not very enlightening. I don’t know if I’ll come back– I’m tempted but I hate being disappointed about food!

The Huaraches are very good. But, you have to dine in to enjoy and savor the food. Their food presentation is appetizing when you dine in, but very awful when you get your food to-go. The wait for a seat is soo long, to the point that you would starve and get annoyed waiting. Overall, I would give this place a 3 star. This is not a good place to go when you are hungry and with a limited time to savor the food.

After recently discovering what a true huarache was during my last trip to Mexico City, I browsed Unilocal to see if I can find a place that looked like a bonafide authentic huarache place in or around Santa Ana. To my surprise, I didn’t find anything. It wasn’t until I zoomed out to LA that this place came up. The pics in the reviews looked the most authentic to the ones I had in «el DF» especially compared to some of the other huarache establishments across SoCal, so I decided to bookmark it. Today, since I was out and about with my Dad, I decided to take the drive out there from Santa Ana. This place DIDNOTDISAPPOINT. I ordered the al pastor super huarache and man… In true DF style, this bean-stuffed huarache was full of flavor, the al pastor meat was not over cooked but well done enough to have that crunchy texture that adds a lot of flavor. The sour cream was just right and the salsa was also tasty. My dad had the chicharron and he very much enjoyed his too! They have a large variety of meat options including chicken. Like any authentic Mexican establishment they serve Aguas frescas(horchata, jamaica, tamarindo) we both had the horchata and it too was on point… I can’t wait to come back!!! For a true huarache that keeps to its Mexico City roots, this is the place to come to!!! Remember this place is Cash only!

The wait for the food is crazy, i waited for like 45 minutes for my food to come out(i only have 1 hour for lunch) the food they sold me(super huarache) is supposed to go in top of a tortilla, all the meat and vegetables were spred all over the plate. Waiting so long for that quality of food is not worth my precious lunch time. I would not recomend el Huarache Azteca if you are looking for good fast food.

Huarache is hands down an essential Mexican diner in highland park. While Mexican food is in abundance, huarache azteca has a diverse array of food, from classic antojitos to soups, platos and a variety of beverages. We really missed it when it was getting renovated the last two months. However, the swanky new interiors have attracted much more of the gentrifying crowd from highland park– which I guess is good for business, but is pretty annoying. Nonetheless do come here and sample some dank burrito mojado!!!

The food was pretty good. Nothing to complain about on that side but it took forever. I’m not sure exactly what makes it take that long but we waited 45 mins for 4 huaraches. The people around us waited similar amounts of time too. They were quite irritated too.

Undoubtedly, one of the best things about Los Angeles is the cheap, authentic Mexican food. I had been, just a few weeks earlier, to a more expensive, hipper, «fancier» taco place in Echo Park and it was bland and uninteresting. Huarache Azteca is in a somewhat hip neighborhood but is an old-school family run hole-in-the wall. There is nothing fancy about it though they would probably disagree. While decorated on a budget, thought and time have been put into making the place look charming and welcoming. But let’s be honest, I was here for the ONEDOLLAR tacos. They did take longer than you might think — it’s not fast food even though you order at the counter — but they were great. Not just«this is okay for a dollar» but seriously yummy«I can’t believe this was a dollar.» The horchata is delicious, you can get a glass while you’re waiting, and the chips and salsa are top-notch. Bring a friend, soak up the atmosphere and have some delicious Mexican food!

come early to beat the lunch rush because this hole in the wall is pretty SMALL so you gotta get a seat & service is slow make sure to hit up the salsa bar and grab the red sauce(like habanero), salsa verde, and the avocado cream sauce! they were all good to rotate through —carne asada hurache: YASSS, crispy elongated flat bread type thing with carne asada & mexican cheese PLUS fresh cilantro! —mango raspado: NO mango chunks, it was all blended in the ice so not exactly the best raspado i’ve had NOTE: cash only

This little hole in the wall restaurant on York specializes in huarache, which consists of a long, flat corn tortilla(but thicker) with toppings and sauce. I’ve never seen this at any other Mexican place. We ordered the super huarache with carne asada and it was delicious, although next time I’ll try another meat because the carne was a little tough and hard to eat because it wasn’t chopped up. We also ordered chilaquiles but it wasn’t as good as the huarache. Tacos were good, especially the homemade corn tortillas. The pastor meat which was flavorful and a bit fatty(in a good way). Next time we’ll try the nachos(I’ve been on a nacho kick lately) and get more huaraches!

Super Huarache Review! THEAMBIANCE: Huarache Azteca is a medium-sized restaurant. They have a main dining area in the front right when you walk in and they also have a ramp that takes you up to a second dining area. The restroom is located in the main dining area. On my visit the restroom was very clean. A waitress comes to take your order. I am not sure if the waitress is supposed to drop the tab on your table or you walk to the front counter in the main dining area to pay because she wasn’t coming and we had to leave so we walked to the front counter. THEFOOD: My coworker told me they were known for their huaraches. I asked our waitress if she recommended the Super Huarache or the regular Huarache. She recommended the Super Huarache. The Super Huarache comes with red sauce on one side of the Huarache and green sauce on the other side. You get to pick a meat out of a long list and you can do half and half. I chose the Super Huarache with half chorizo/potato and half carne asada. The huarache comes topped with delicious queso fresco, red onion slices, a drizzle of sour cream, and cilantro. It was so good! The meat and the masa with beans was on point. I LOVED the chorizo and potatoes. The sauces are NOT spicy, which was a huge plus for me. You can add hot sauce if you want that spicy kick. To drink I had a lemon/cucumber agua fresca and it was good. THETIPS: CASHONLY! Street parking. I did not have to pay a meter. I would definitely recommend the Super Huarache and would come back to order another! MUYRICO!
