LOVE their sign on the street, it worked! It got us to stop and visit the store. This store is not those cash only cheap gift stores, Fong’s has a lot o interesting unique items, from miniature collectible, doll houses to $ 800 antique chinese dresses. It you are looking for antique collectibles, this is the place to go!

A friend took me here — she was familiar with the old location and the owner’s family. The new location is just in the downstairs courtyard of a Best Western(?) — very accessible. It’s smaller than the original, but there’s a really nice mix of actual antiques and jewelry with newer hipster fun stuff. Very nice people, small little interesting selection of books, doll house miniatures, jewelry(some real, some costume), toys and other housewares items. It would be easy to find a gift here.

The best thing about Fong’s has to be their location and sign. The sign is so photogenic and iconic. The shop itself is small and littered with interesting traditional and non-traditional Chinese themed items. In need of handcuffs? They have those here too.

Great selection of uncommon goods, reasonable prices and the shop keepers are incredibly nice. Definitely a must visit when in the area…

I like the new old Fong’s with its unique asian influenced art prints, books, and gifts above the standard someone-got-this-for-me-in-Chinatown souveniers. What I bought — six high quality Leo Politi(author and ilustrator of children’s books w/the coveted Caldecott Medal) postcards for $ 1.50/ ea. $ 9.88 plus tax. Yea, they’re above board.

Along Chung King Road lies Fong’s, one of those stores that seemed to have stood the test of time. I have pictures of my parents standing along Chung King Road and the Fong’s sign is clearly visible in some. Walking in today, I was surprised they weren’t carrying the usual knick knacks but a higher class of stationery, miniatures perfect for a dollhouse as well as some cool jewelry. I also saw they sold chops. I didn’t inquire if they carved chops in store as I already have my own chop(a type of stamp with your name, meant to be stamped on paintings or letters). I was telling someone about Lisa See, one of Chinatown’s own whose family owned a furniture shop when I noticed this store was carrying See’s books. Apparently they sell all her books as well as other literature. Mostly the store is eclectic though so don’t count on trying to find the latest popular novel here.

Fong’s is sort of in the back of a relatively quiet shopping area in the Chunking Road. It’s still in the family, run by the late owner’s nephew. Inside are some wonderful statues… some authentic semi-antiques, and others are somewhat generic statues and reproduction items. Along one wall are some gorgeous scrolls, and overhead are a variety of wind chimes and bells. If you look carefully enough you will find some odd items on occasion, and even the plain cool and funky — such as a very cool statue of Chairman Mao. The price range I marked is a bit arbitrary in that there are items that are relatively cheap(bells), while others may set you back a bit(some of the statues or the scrolls in particular), so don’t take it as a given that it’s simply moderate… it’s varied.
