I went to this place a few years ago but haven’t bothered to create a review until now because my friend was in that neighborhood and said she no longer sees the store. Unless, she missed it, the storefront is out of business… and here is why: A while back I was in the neighborhood with time to kill so I thought I would stop into this boutique. I love supporting small, unknown businesses with local appeal so I really wanted to like this place! Sadly, I was very disappointed. Everything there was mostly super tacky and cheap looking. The owner claims to have items that are authentic African goods and while that could very well be the case, there are different levels of quality from Africa. I’m guessing the owner doesn’t have much background knowledge of what to buy or knows what is fashionable. Though she certainly thinks so(hello, arrogant). I have to say, I get offended when people try to use a culture I’m so proud of and turn it into something it is not – in this case, tasteless. To be fair, I did not walk in expecting to see Duro Oluwu on the racks, I was just hoping for something more tasteful and modern. I like when my culture is represented with class and I did not see that here. I appreciate their desire to be fun, playful, authentic, and sexy, but whoever buys this stuff either has no idea about style or is trying very hard to be something they are not. Tacky is not fun or sexy(hint: people who look sexy usually don’t need to wear the word itself on their bodies). There was just too much going on here… which is a mistake they repeat on their website(SUCH a shame) – low end and rather garish bags, clunky attempts at costume jewelry that if designed better with higher quality materials, could have been pretty, aprons, skincare that is overpriced for what it is(ps. you are not Michelle Obama; no need to put your face on the product. Wow, ego problems), lingerie, tutus, waist beads, and more. I like the concept of variety but this was a mess! It all seemed so random and poorly dumped into one shop. When I first looked at their website, I was confused why they would offer Reiki. Then I realized that customers would need it in order to heal themselves from all the clutter shopping here might cause. It’s like shopping at a swap meet. Does Reiki heal clutter? I don’t know, but good thing they offer that too, just in case. I applaud the efforts of novice business owners but this place was just too much crazy jammed into one place. No business sense. I wish this place would have had more staying power. That neighborhood could have used a cute boutique! This place(site) is just a cluttered eyesore. If you’re looking for African-inspired and inexpensive but decent fashion, you’re better off looking elsewhere.
