Got a red velvet cupcake. the icing tasted fresh slightly cooled. Bread part was dense and perfectly moist without being dry nor greasy definitely not too sweet allowing the frosting evenly distribute it’s sweetness through each bite. I would say it’s now among my top red velvets that I’ve had. Other Top cake faves being 5c diner downtown and bean town in Pasadena. This one is on the lighter –satisfy –your –craving –without –diabetes side. No line and no wait

Well to finish off my food truck experience, I thought It would be nice to try one of the many cupcakes from Dainty Cakes L.A. Again, much like all of the other trucks parked outside of this art gallery, the staff was friendly. I just can’t pin point it, but there was something very average about the cupcake I had. I went with the Rocky Road. But I must add that had it not been for the frosting the cupcake would have lost yet another star. I don’t like writing what might sound like a bad review, so I’m not going to go into great detail. I will just say that the cake I ordered was O.K. and that I will be giving them another try. Overall, things looked clean and the staff was very friendly.

Oh dainty cakes. You had me fooled. Your display of pretty-looking cupcakes looked too tempting to resist. So I forfeited my 3 bucks for your Oreo Cupcake, and walked away an unfulfilled customer. It’s not that your Oreo Cupcake tasted terrible; it really did taste like an Oreo cookie! But your cake was dry and your frosting was too heavy, too thick, and too sweet. My only solace was that your cupcake was sizeable, but alas, that is not enough to bring me back when I know there are better cupcakes out there.

One of my other«food truck» stops off of Sawtelle and Olympic tonight. I ordered the red velvet… what I did like about it, was the fact that it isn’t your average cupcake. The style is different from the rest. The texture is heavy and thick… almost like a cake cake. The frosting was good… not thick and not too sweet. I normally don’t like frosting, but I didn’t mind this one. Overall, I liked it, but it didn’t stand out… don’t think it was worth my 3 bucks. maybe $ 2. I would probably try it again… but a different flavor, however I wouldn’t go out of my way to find them.

Two Bacon Desserts in one night? yay for Artwalk! After indulging the bacon donut at Nickel Diner, and some other food truck eats at Artwalk, we were about to call it a night when this truck pulled up and what do we see in the truck window? U know i had to get one… As for how i actually liked the French Toast Bacon Cupcake– cake itself was ok, a little heavy like cornbread, and the frosting tasted pretty much like butter. the bacon on the other hand that was sitting on top, was nicely sticky sweet and salty. There was something inside the cake, it might have been pieces of bacon?, fat? but i pretended they were apples. 3 stars for the cupcake, adding ½ star for having bacon on their menu. and why no ½ stars on Unilocal? next on my list, breakfast bacon cupcake at My Delight. as far as dessert trucks go, my fave is still Sweets Truck, since they have stuff from Auntie Ems. =)

Yum, I’m liking this dessert food truck! When we went to grab our Vietnamese sandwiches from Mandoline Grill(our night is Wednesdays when they park at Hillhurst and Price) we were pleasantly surprised to see a dessert truck parked behind them. There was no line and so we decided to take the plunge and each try a $ 3 cupcake. Yes, the price is a bit hefty but man, they were very good cupcakes. We tried vanilla with chocolate frosting & an orea concoction that did not disappoint. The cupcake is fluffy and the frosting is super creamy. Cupcake is really big enough for two people. we split each one down the middle and finished them off because we couldn’t help it. Hope they come back next week! I want to try the chocolate covered cake balls– 3 for $ 4.

I’d give it 4.5 stars. I had to take away half a star because the appearance of the bacon cake was a little alarming(see picture). It may have been a miscommunication on my part: I assumed that«covered in bacon» meant covered in chopped/crumbled bacon, not slabs. In any case, my brother thought it was a funny gag and the family enjoyed the french toast flavored cake with maple frosting. The bacon topping turned out to be a nice contrast to the sugary sweetness. It tasted like Sunday breakfast in every bite. Our waitresses at the restaurant where we had dinner all wanted to have a slice of this cake. I give the baker kudos for the challenge of using a cupcake recipe to build a much larger birthday cake in a short amount of time.

Date of visit: 5÷6÷10 Food ordered:(A) 4 chocolate covered cake balls,(B) 1 chocolate mint cupcake Cost: $ 6.00 Wait time: 5 minutes. I was second in line, and there was only one girl in the truck, so she had to do everything. The girl in front of me ordered two cupcakes(to give you an idea of average time per cupcake). Food Review: (A) — very good. The chocolate covering the cake balls was a good thickness(about ¼″) and it held the cake ball together firmly. The cake itself was not very sweet, and so the sweetness was supplied in great part by the chocolate surrounding the ball. (B) — Terrible. The chocolate cake had no flavor and was very dense. The frosting was greasy and had no flavor whatsoever. After my first bite I was very confused because the only flavor I tasted was provided by the peppermint specks that were sprinkled on the frosting. After my first bite, I removed the frosting: this is how I discovered it was oily. Also, growing up near a bread factory, there is nothing better than the smell of baked goods. This truck did not possess that. I understand that as a truck it is hard to cook/bake and drive. But I was disappointed in seeing that the ‘variety’ of flavors was supplied by simply adding a frosting in the flavor you ordered. For example, Chocolate-Peanut Butter was just a chocolate cupcake with peanut butter frosting, and my chocolate mint was just a chocolate cupcake with mint green frosting. I would have like to have seen and tasted more within the cake itself. But maybe I am just a picky baker. Overall Verdict: Avoid the cupcakes and go for the chocolate covered balls. If you want a $ 3.00 cupcake made of all natural ingredients and tasty frosting, then I would recommend the chain with locations in Santa Monica and Burbank. Ciao chow!

Meeehhhhhh We stopped by Dainty Cakes after visiting Intelligentsia for some sweets, only since Jin Patisserie was closed and we wanted a sugar fix! Which btw, only in LA would you spot 5 different types of food trucks while walking along the sidewalk… really? Anyway, some people were lined up outside so we thought, why not? We ordered a Red Velvet(of course), Cookie Monster(chocolate cupcake with oreo cookies in cream frosting), and were super intrigued by BACON bun bites. so we had to grab a few of those as well. Each item was $ 3 After a short wait, our treats were ready while the bacon was still being fried(oh gosh…) The red velvet was nothing spectacular. not memorable at all. I’m starting to think a lot of places just dye their flour red and label it red velvet just so people can buy it :(The cookie monster was good, but I mean, oreos on anything is good! and finally. the moment of truth. the BBB… which were cupcake balls wrapped in bacon, fried and drizzled with a sauce. tasted overpoweringly of bacon, with a tiny bit of sweetness from the cake. I could only stand one bite of these. Who would ever think to order 6 for $ 5?! My other friends said they could only taste the bacon and would’ve liked more cake, but eh, either way I wouldn’t order them again. or come back here again in fact. I’d rather pay a quarter more per cupcake for some Sprinkles. sorry. maybe next time I’m in LA I’ll be able to spot the Sprinklesmobile around. now THAT would be awesome :)

Well, I really wanted to try the Bacon Bun Bites, but the truck was sold out. These were the most appealing sounding things. The cupcake I got was okay. The butterscotch vanilla cupcake $ 3, a huge departure from my typical keep it simple cupcake motto, was eh. The cake was moist and not oily or overly sweet, but not the best cupcake. The nice part of it was that the cupcake is not iced until you order it. The butterscotch was drizzled into the center of the cupcake and then over the icing as well. The best part was the cake bites! These were delicious chocolate covered balls of cake. 4 of em for $ 3. Woo hoo!

Meh, me sorry. Why am I writing like this? What’s wrong with me? It must be… no, really? I don’t know. I really am sad. I don’t want to say bad things about a place that serves a small, compact lump of butter, sugar, and of course, coconut. Alas, here it comes – there was only one overworked, yet very sweet cupcaker inside the truck, frosting the cupcakes as they were ordered. And there were a lot ordered ahead of us. The worker had to fill a new tube to ice each little cake individually. I think, possibly in haste, she may have filled my tube with pure butter. Because, well… egad. Dage? Good lord. Oh, why??? WHY?! No party in this tummy. I don’t even like cake that much. All I care about is the frosting, which I had to throw away.(Was this a mistake, or was this actually the real icing?) Suffice it to say, the cake was actually quite good. Dense, yet moist and enough coconut to make note of. Next time, please just pass the bucket of coconut shavings.

I was eating their goods during the Lantern Festival. Gah. I was so happy to see them there because I was craving dessert. The guy taking my order recognized me…“oh back again?” Hell yes, I’m back again! My friends and I ordered a crapload of goodies from this truck. All of the items we ordered were pretty damn good. The pictures say it all. Red velvet cupcake. Gah, I love this one. I almost creamed in my undies. I know… Lemon blueberry cupcake. I wanted to try something different but I should have gotten another red velvet cupcake instead! Although it was tasty, I preferred the red velvet. Golden bun bites. Cake bits fried and preserves poured over it. Good when it came out warm. Not so good cold. Chocolate dipped cake balls. Red velvet cake dipped in chocolate. To die for. Crêpe with Nutella. This was the only let down. It took forever and the portion was small. Since our order took awhile, they gave us free bottled water! I heart you guys… Dammit…I wish I had some cupcakes right now…*le sigh*

A cupcake truck! I know just the very thought makes ones eyes light up and a slight bit of drool form on the side of your mouth, right? OK so maybe it was just me, but I have to say I got way to excited for this truck, probably because it was the first cupcake truck I had ever encountered. I got there just in time, everything was still available, so I had tons to choose from. Being a sucker for red velvet, of course I choose the red velvet cupcake. By first glance it looked scrumptious, bright red, white glistening frosting, with small red edible confetti hearts on top. On first bite I noticed the frosting while really smooth and fresh was extremely to sweet for my liking, and the cake was actually a bit dry, a combo that was rather depressing. Since I was on my way to meet someone for lunch, and had stopped for a sweet detour I asked how long they would be in their location so I could return with my lunch date. I returned a couple hours later, which was 2 hours before their specified time to close up shop and selection was gone, nothing was left except a salted brownie. Now I have to say beside the cupcake being a let down the salted brownie was really good. Maybe I just caught them on an off day but sadly I can say I have had better cupcakes else where, perhaps another try someday…

Yes, I am the guy who went to the cupcake truck and didn’t get cupcakes. While this was my first time, what caught my interest was one of the daily specials-bacon bun bites, 4 for $ 3. Seemed like a good deal, so i went for it. Close to ONEHOUR later, i was able to eat my bites. This is a one woman operation, which is great when it comes to quality control. Speedy delivery? Not so much. At least she stopped every 10 mins to tell me it would be a few more minutes. The 4th time that happened she gave me a free soda too, so at least she was conscious of the fact i was waiting. Now The food. Imagine a donut hole, only not a hole, a chunk. But not sweet. Now wrap that donut chunk in a piece of semi crispy but still pliable smokey and delicious bacon. Drizzle some sauce(spicy or reg, both seem like a cross between ketchup, bbq sauce and sweet chili sauce.) and there you have it. It was a really tasty and unique treat, and at 4 for $ 3 not a bad price either. They are absolutely not worth a 50 min wait however, so i suggest asking for an ETA before ordering. Easily would have been 4 stars if not for the wait. This is 100% an item i would return for, while keeping the above disclaimer in mind. Oh yeah, cupcakes looked good too and those were pre-maid, so they come out a little bit quicker.

As I waited in line for Flying Pig during the food trucks for Haiti benefit, I saw the Dainty Cakes truck roll up. They were about 2 hours late. No matter. I was craving some sweets so I decided THAT truck would be my last. The line was long, but I didn’t really think much of it since pretty much all the trucks I tried that day had long lines. WELL… over an 1 hour later, waiting in the cold, I got to the front the line: WTF!!! Cupcakes shouldn’t take that long to serve up. Then I realized that the truck was also serving crepes and sandwiches. And, there were only 2 workers, one to take orders and the other to make the food. Also, the frosting is not on the cupcake, once you place your order, then the frosting is put on. Many people in the line were agitated at the wait, but they did stick it out. Some cupcake flavors weren’t even available. I thought to myself, these better be damn good cupcakes for the wait. Here’s my order: –French toast w/bacon –Red Velvet –Chocolate w/Bailey’s frosting I took the cupcakes to go since I was too cold and too stuffed to try them right at that moment. When I got home later in the day, I took a bite out of the cupcakes. The cupcakes looked very gourmet and the French toast w/bacon was interestingly good: sweet, salty, buttery… all the bad stuff rollled into a cupcake. The cakes were moist and quite good. Well, why then the 2 stars? It was for the wait to get the cupcakes. I’d give the cupcakes 3.5, maybe 4, but it just took too long to get the cupcakes, so I had to deduct some stars. Here are my suggestions(as well as many disgruntled customers waiting in line) if Dainty Cakes LA is going to be at a big event like the one on Saturday: –have 2 – 3 people making the food, and 1 person taking the orders and handling the money. –if you are only going to have 1 person making food, then don’t serve crepes or sandwiches that day… only offer cupcakes. –I appreciate a freshly frosted cupcake, but the line would have gone faster if the cupcakes already of their frosting on them. I really like their cupcakes and I like that they are adventurous with their cakes(French toast bacon… very creative). But, I felt that they really weren’t prepared for a big event(they arrived 2 hours late), so they came off looking a little unprofessional to me. Maybe this was a fluke. If I see them at another big event like LA Artwalk, I may try them again… if they don’t have a huge line. Otherwise, I won’t be hunting them down any time soon.

Dainty Cakes… or more like Bomb Cakes! See what I did there? Yeah? Alright, so anyway… I had the peanut butter/chocolate cupcake. The chocolate cupcake itself wasn’t super moist but then again, it was probably made earlier that day or yesterday since this operation is out of a truck. That’s forgivable. The peanut butter frosting was amazing. It tasted very fresh, soft, peanut-buttery. Very yummy. Price per cupcake is $ 3.00 and they give you a stamp card too. Order 8 cupcakes, your 9th is free. My only vice about this truck is the wait. Wait to order and wait to get the cupcake. The cupcakes are already made so… what’s taking them so long to frost them? I would come back for a cupcake here if I saw the truck. If the line is too long though, I would pass though.

Sparkles may get all the attention when it comes to the mobile pastry trucks, but Dainty Cakes is where it be at, yo. Had a banana cupcake the last time during Art Walk and well, it was damn-well delicious. The truck boast that they bake the cupcakes on the truck. Which means that you’re going to get some of the freshest possible cupcake around. You have to give them props for that. Considering I’m one of those who feels that the cupcake scene has gotten to the point of absurdity because let’s face it, making a cupcake is easy. Making a shop that is entirely made of various bakery items on the other hand shows some skills. So it’s those stand alone cupcake places that I think wont last. So for me to back one, you know it’s much more than a simple cupcake. The line was non-existent and the service was really nice. I suppose with just me as a customer they were able to talk and be a bit more personal with. Over all, this is one of the better trucks out there and especially good if you have a sweet tooth craving to fill.

Ooh food trucks-you’ve come a long way… a long annoying way… Dainty cakes was conveniently next to the Calbi truck in Little Tokyo and if it were not, i wouldnt have sought it out. Why? I dont like the name. «Dainty».Why not call it «super smiley pussy-cakes»? Its just so asia-effeminate, im reminded of the family guy gag where there was a TV show called, «asian girls like tiny things». What’s that? you want a valid answer? how about this: it looks and feels like an asian knockoff of sprinkles, or some other already established cupcake maker. Like a «Donut Star» of the roving cupcake world. I think I’d be much MUCH nicer if they tasted good, much less looked better. I’ll say something nice right now: I LOVEDTHECOCONUT. There. Well, The coconut cupcake tastes like that of Auntie Em’s in Eagle Rock… its not just white or yellow cake with coconut slapped on. It has coconut flavor all throughout the dessert… only its DRIER… and SMALLER. The annoyingly ubiquitous red velvet was also spotted here and… PASS. These tasted earthy. When I say«earthy», I mean they tasted like clay. No, that’s not a insult. Its what I swear they seriously taste like. They were dense but to the point of being dough-ey, almost uncooked in the middle. Red Velvets are supposed to have layers or depth of flavor stemming from the light hints of cocoa, buttermilk, vinegar, etc… These tasted like a mishmash of ingredients, creating not a symphony, but the sound of what happens when a 3-year old mashes their hands on piano keys. Bleh. I made a bunch of red velvet for a large gathering last week and i think mine were better. Im not bragging, im a home cook, not a baker but i think mine were better. What really just upset me were the peppermint candy chocolate cupcake nonsense. I usually love mint. I like mint in my drinks, desserts, breathmints, etc… I hated these. Dont get me wrong, it SOUNDS good, but after tasting it, it’s not. Its a decent chocolate cupcake with frosting that’s been defiled by red and white mint candy. Really, why not just use toothpaste? because that’s what it tasted like. Again, sounds and kinda looks like a good idea, but no. Remember in 3rd grade making gingerbread houses with graham crackers, frosting and candy? Well, here’s to you, flavors of childhood. Appearance of these cupcakes were also quite off putting. I think this is why I used a Donut Star reference. They’re not too hideous but they dont look clean; as in clean, professional lines – not hygiene. My beef is with the chocolate chip cupcake. It looked gross. Like someone used a spray can of frosting & made a few lines, then sprinkled a few chocolate chips on top that by the time i got to it, looked like they were melting. I know, I know, I must be stupid for talking about the craftsmanship on cupcakes, but you’re trying to sell me a product in an increasingly competitive food truck market with some already tough competitors, it wouldnt kill you to step up your game. ok, im done getting mad at cupcake truck. I personally wouldnt seek it out again but the lady was nice enough, so go and try and see if im just being a nazi.

WHAT? more like DRY-LYCAKES. my friend stopped by the truck on the way over to my apartment. and that cupcake was SODRY. it tasted like it was made a week ago… the texture was either like a stale muffin or. just not fresh.(maybe because they are just starting. STILLNOEXCUSE!) their flavors are. whatevers. the banana was very artificial tasting. .the vanilla frosting on the chocolate cupcake was decent. but there was no good cake for it to go with. in my opinion i always avoid these food trucks!

Conveniently located cupcakes? Yep, that’s Dainty Cakes. See, I’m not the type of person to go out and buy dainty cupcakes because I’m a manly man.(totally kidding) But seriously, it helps prevent me from scarfing them down like they’re going out of style. However, when I saw the Dainty Cakes truck parked on Gayley Ave. near the UCLA campus… all of that went out the window. Out the window of their truck and into my mouth that is. From the outside it looks like a standard mobile kitchen but on the inside they serve cupcakes. Sweet, sweet cupcakes. ( ) They have a chalkboard on the side that gives you the current menu of confections they’ll be concocting on that day and really there’s so much to choose from. Camellia C. and I had the Red Velvet and Chocolate cupcakes and they were rich, creamy, and delicious. On their website they list each cupcake at 3.00 bucks but the two youthful bakers were kind enough to get it to us at 2.50 each. Not bad because I think their cupcakes might be as good if not better than Sprinkles. Plus, they like to mix it up by offering cool mixed flavors which is always a treat. Also, on this night they were open late as I was getting back from the gym at close to 11p. But it’s not a treat when you’re going to the gym trying to look like Taylor Lautner for the lady friend. Why is it so hard to pass up cupcakes when they come to you?
