I hadn’t been here in a good while but cravings for Chinese food couples with the fact that tonight is Chinese New Year, my husband and I decided to give this place another try. This place has changed a lot. Their menu states nutrition facts now(not that I ever expect to eat healthy at most American Chinese restaurants). We ordered two entrees with the dinner special. I’m not sure I totally buy their health claims on some of the items although I guess they could be true considering they don’t post serving size. Here is a break down of our order. The Hot and sour soup was tasty but sweet. Egg drop soup– probably the healthiest thing we ordered. The waiter told us this soup is low carb but who knows. Fried shrimp– very fried but in a good way. Sauce wasn’t as good as some other places but the crispy fried shrimp was just right. Egg roll– perfectly fried, warm and crispy. Mushroom chicken– a good«healthier choice option. Tender chicken good mushrooms and a light sauce. Beef and broccoli– advertised as a healthier option, not sure how healthy that sauce can be. The broccoli was not mushy and was green and crispy and the beef was just right. I would rate this place higher but after eating here my stomach was pretty upset and I started questioning the«healthiness.» This is a good place for greasy Americanized Chinese food.

I don’t really like American-style Chinese food, but my wife does so we went here for lunch. Most importantly, the flavors were good. I actually really liked the food. Secondly, there was a lot of it. We ordered two lunch entrees, which came with hot&sour soups, spring rolls, and a big dish of fried rice(you can get steamed instead). Quality *and* quantity. We brought home leftovers for at least another meal, all for, with tax and 20% tip, $ 18. Even though, as I said, I’m not a big fan of Americanized Chinese food, I would return to Cheng Du.

This restaurant is a well kept secret with it’s wonderfully calming décor, it’s extensive menu and just basic great Chinese offerings. Well priced, with very attentive servers, we’ve been in here many times enjoying their array of chicken, fish, pork and beef entrees, soups, salads and desserts. I’m not a gourmet restaurant reviewer but this place is just plain great food!

Another example of Americanized Chinese food. twice cooked pork, a famous Sichuan dish, tastes sweet. This is unacceptable for native Chinese! Why Chinese food west side is always sweet and serve dishes like orange chicken, beef broccoli which don’t exist in China at all. Too much disappointment. Maybe Cantonese dishes are sweet but Sichuan food is nottttttttt. Please stop abusing Sichuan food with sweet food!

Only been living in west L.A. for half my life, yet hadn’t eaten here until recently. We were so happy to discover the good food at Cheng Du and the friendly service. Prices are good so you can order a few dishes to share or pack up for later. We’ve eaten in and taken food to go and the quality is the same. They have parking on the side/back and there’s also parking on Pico. I understand they have a thriving delivery business too. I like coming in because of the old school Chinese restaurant atmo. Tom aka Cheng(long time server) is a gem. This is the type of restaurant that will become your staple, «go to» place. It’s not a one-off visit.

This place is fantastic! I’ve ordered Cheng Du for delivery twice and so far, it’s my favorite spot. I previously ordered from Jing Jiang but the orange chicken recipe changed and I no longer enjoy it. The tangerine chicken and fried rice dishes from Cheng Du are SO good! Also, they ALWAYS deliver faster than the expected time. Highly recommended :]

I was/still am disappointed with my order this evening from Cheng Du. I am a regular here and tonight I had my usual beef & broccoli, soup and egg rolls. Everything checked out fine until I bit into a chunk of beef and it was pink, chewey and left an over-all bad taste in my mouth. It was gross. The hot and sour soup is always good for me. I’ve never had an issue with it as well as Cheng Du’s food in general but tonight was something different. I hate to complain about food but I honestly feel that future customers should be aware of my review and eat the beef or anything else here with caution. Don’t say I didn’t warn you! (See photo of beef) I am rating 2 stars because I have always appreciated the service Cheng du has offered and the food in general is very tasty and filling.

I was very excited when we discovered this place but then found out it had nothing to do about«Cheng Du Taste», the restaurants in the east side that served amazing Schezuan food. Nonetheless, we tried this place. We didn’t want to look badly at the restaurant just for my error and so we ate. The tastes were standard. Fish dishes were good. Aside from that I really can’t remember the taste very much even though we ate there yesterday. The service was horrible when it comes to a certain waitress. She really didn’t want to work there, that was apparent. She almost let loose the«Rankor”(my gf’s temper). I don’t know about you but my lovely gf is one of those restaurant time bombs. If she had a bad day and the service is «lacking» she might just kill everyone with her chap stick. I tend to «intercept» her ire towards any service worker that has crossed her.(Oh well, I love spicy women they make me laugh). Everyone else seemed to be genuinely friendly. The décor was dreary and their building’s outside persona is very difficult to spot on the road. Street metered parking. Where ever you are from and if you didn’t grow up with an internationally motivated taste bud then this place is good for you but then so is Chinese mall food.

Went to this place because my favorite place in West LA closed down. Order my favorite Chinese dishes. OMG– they were so bad. There were no kick in my kung p[ao chicken., I had to have a few drinks when I got home to wash the taste out off my mouth. Guys, get some seasoning in your food. like, I don’t’ know– salt and pepper. cheez, Never again. Please, get with program– it’s not too hard.

Ordered for delivery, our chow mein had a large rusted screw in it which we actually bit into not looking and realizing it was there. Will never order here again as this is not the first time we have found something in their food!!!

This place is GREAT! If you like crispy noodles and seafood, I strongly suggest the House Pan Fried Noodle Combination Sizzling Plate!!! Also, best dry Salt and Pepper Shirmp!!!

I don’t think I will be back to this place. The food was Soso at best. The prices are fair but he service is non existent. We had to bus our own dishes and ask for everything. The server got a little indignant and did not have a clue.

I ordered Beef and Broccoli and had it delivered by Eat24. My food arrived within 30 minutes and was still nice and hot. I have not but good things to say. I even had enough for dinner the next night. It was still so tasty even after reheating it in the microwave! I’ll be ordering again very soon.

Me, my family, and coincidentally, my Fiancée and her family have been coming here for years. It is one of our favorite Chinese restaurants in the world! The staff is extremely friendly and their food is great. Our favorite dishes are their Hot and Sour Soup, Shrimp with Chef’s Special Sauce, and the Garlic Chicken.

Full disclosure: I am a typical white girl born and raised in the MidWest; what do I know about authentic Chinese food… that would be nothing. However, I do know a delicious meal when I eat it! Having ordered delivery several times to the office(always fantastic service, food great, affordable, and large portions), mom and I decided to dine in. She had been there years ago, and had fond memories. We were there pretty early and there were only a few other customers in the restaurant. Service was lovely. We shared Honey-Glazed Walnut Prawns and House Special Beef Steak(hold the green peppers please). What can I say; phenomenally good! The shrimp was done to perfection with a very light sauce. There was a slight hint of orange and the delicious walnuts outlined the shrimp all atop some sweet shredded cabbage. The House Special Beef Steak is a ton of tender beef on a hot sizzling plate with mushrooms and sauteed onions. OMG. The sauce is not overwhelming or drowning the dish. Each bite made us make num num noises out loud. One dish was $ 13.95, one was $ 14.50, and served a la carte. These items are the more expensive«House Specialties» and a lot of other menu selections range $ 7 — $ 10. We stayed for a while to let all that delicious food settle, enjoying some tea. When we left around 6:45 p.m., the restaurant was empty. They are open until 10:00 p.m., so I really hope their business picks up. p. s. we had to ask to see the chef to tell him how much we loved our meal

If I could write a negative star review I would. I am calling the health department after this. I ordered take out the other night and got the hot and sour soup and the chicken chow mein. And at the bottom of the soup I found a small cockroach. I was so grossed out, I mean do they just have their food sitting around in their infested kitchen or what? Also I wondered if the bug ingested poison before falling or crawling into my soup. The flavor of the soup and the chow mein was simple not flavorful. The major note was soy sauce. There are better places to eat Chinese food.

I’ve noticed most of the bad reviews(at least those I’ve read) are about the takeout service. I did takeout once as well and almost never came back. Something about the way it sits in the containers doesn’t seem to sit well. But order in and it’s great! I’ve been here quite a few times and I’ve brought friends and we always have good food and great service. Now, as far as the dining experience, I would never bring a date here. It’s not the best décor either. This is no frills dining, but the service staff is always polite and kind and the last time we were there, they even served us egg drop soup even though we didn’t order it,(kind of an appetizer while we waited). Also, the portions are so large, I enjoy it the next day for lunch. One other quick anecdote. I love the tea and when I asked the server about it, he was kind enough to give me a plastic container with the tea leaves before we left(he also gave me instructions on how best to brew it). A great place to hang out with friends for lunch or dinner.

I have been visiting Cheng Du(formerly Chung King) for over two decades now. It’s my favorite childhood Chinese restaurant and my family has visited this restaurant countless times. I recently visited again(after 2 years, actually!) With my fiancé and family and we had a nice experience. The restaurant was pretty empty when we visited(around 730 on a weeknight), but we saw several people get carryout orders. The décor isn’t as nice as it used to be, but don’t let that fool you — the food is still just as delicious. Between all of us, we ordered: –Wonton soup(my fiancé and family shared that) –Hot and sour soup(small cups of this come with the meal) –Beef with Broccoli(my order) –Crispy sesame beef with broccoli –Curry Chicken As always, the food was delicious and the service was excellent. We even recognized our waiter from years ago! I’m so glad I got to take my fiancé to my favorite childhood Chinese restaurant, as he did the same for me :) I will continue to visit Cheng Du for years to come, for as long as they are open.

You cannot beat the lunch specials here. $ 6 for tea, egg rolls, wonton chips, soup, a huge serving of rice and a huge entrée. The veggie chow mein is so delicious. I’ve only had it one time when it wasn’t amazing, but other than that, it doesn’t disappoint. The only downside is that because of the huge portions, you’ll want to take the rest togo but it’s not good a few hours later. It’s never super busy at lunch time, which is such a bummer for how good the food/prices are. There’s a private lot with really tight parking.
