Walked in this place and it looked so dingy, dirty and old. I was also surprised to see an Asian man appear from the back. This place just doesn’t look clean and was not what I was expecting. Turned around and walked right back out. Will continue to look elsewhere when I’m craving fried fish.

I like Charlie’s Fish & Chips. I discovered this place about a month ago and I’ve been 3 times since then. From the fish to the shrimp, I love the oil that Charlie’s uses and the batter taste excellent as well. Their dinner specials are my favorite, I often get the 5 pc of fish with 10 pc shrimp. Two thumbs up.

To quote my boyfriend,” that’s a lot of fish for not a lot of money. & it’s effin’ GOOD too!!” We love this place. The oysters are great! & we can get one combo and share. Check it out. The Only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because it’s closed on Sundays and that’s prime fish eating day. It’s not fancy and it’s never crowded which we love. also.

This place is crap, my friend got the fish and chips and it wasn’t good. It tasted dry and old. They also gave slices of bread instead of buns. No sauces were included.

What a nice surprise. I ordered fried oysters to go and they were wonderful. The place looks disreputable, but it is gem and reasonably priced, If the dining area was more inviting, I would give it 5 stars.

My 100th Review! What does a teacher do when the students are acting crazy, the days lesson plan plummets, and the high tensions of the end of the year arise? Relax, get em’ some good ol’ fish craving and take advantage of being in the mid-city district. Hence, Charlie’s… I’m the teacher that eats good food. All of my co-workers are in awe the way I’m able to give into my desires. Yes, I’m a husky man but I’m also a queen in a past life who went down to the sea to capture these swimming wet pieces of gold. As I took my first bite of my catfish combo, a nostalgic episode burst from my taste beds and probed at my memory. Memories, of growing up in Boston. Cookouts, fish fries, seafood bakes. Family loud, fighting over who ate the most catfish. Whose goin’ to trek back to the fish market in the blizzard? Where the bones all removed before the toddler had their share? Ahhh. Sweet Sweet Memory. All thanks Charlie’s Fish & Chips. There’s a parking lot on the side which is shared with a few other businesses including a liquor store, go figure– it is Mid-City. I walked in and instantly felt at home, reminded me of the Savin Hill fish market in Boston ran by Vietnamese mom and pop. I gazed around at first overwhelmed by all the options and a little worried I would pick the wrong thing. My co-worker who has lived in the area for 20+ years is an avid fan, so I calmed my mind. My eyes lock on the lunch special. Oh yes, that was what I was looking at on Unilocal.Ohhhh, they have shrimp and fish combo! I settled on catfish and shrimp lunch combo which came with a little serving of salad, fries and 2 slices of white bread and soda! I also asked for extra tatar sauce, it’s a New England thing ;) Literally, the plate could not close, the food was piled high! I felt like my queendom from my former life was restored. Charlie’s brought me my wet gold creature, fried perfectly. The catfish was clean too! I gladly ate my food while my students ate their lunch as they looked on with their water mouths. I made a pack, that day no one was going to still my shine. I was royalty, I was blessed by Charlie’s, my stomach was full, the food was tasty, and my pockets we’re smiling.

I’m from the South, and every now and again, I have to have some fried fish. My friends like Charlie’s, and I can see why. Their prices are a little better than Penguin’s, which is a bit east of Charlie’s on Pico. The red snapper special meal at $ 9.75 is a really good deal. Fish was fresh and fried to order. The batter was tasty, but not particularly notable. French fries were good and also fresh. The hushpuppies had a bit of a kick, which I appreciate. The staff was attentive and friendly. There was constant customer traffic when I was there for an early take-out lunch on Saturday. I look forward to trying the chicken and the shrimp next time, although Collins Fish Market has a better priced Sunday shrimp special.

Omg! So this was my Boyfriends and my first time here. And let me tell huh I love it. The service was very good. Very friendly. And the prices for the food very good. We loved the food and we love seafood and we can be picky with seafood. But this place omg like an orgasm. Lol so good. They aren’t greedy with the ketchup and sauce to go. We will definitely come back.

Went 2 days in a row! LOL. Pretty solid fish & shrimp plus they’re not too far from my job. I’ll def continue to come here. The fries aren’t that great but I love that they give a salad & drink with the lunch combos. Fish & Shrimp were seasoned perfectly, I like to call my order in and just pick up. Service is quick and they’re really friendly.

Small parking lot. Street metered street parking available. $ 0.25 for 15 minutes. No restroom for customers. Almost like a mini-fish market where they have a cooler with different types of fish, you tell them what you want and they cook it up for you. If you like to have a soda with your meal, they serve cans so no refills if you’re into that(which I am). Not the nicest looking place so if you get nervous in places that look a little sketchy, you might want to bring a big friend with you. Enjoy!

A friend and I came here on impulse when in a sudden mood for fish & chips and based on the generally favorable reviews. The reviews don’t adequately describe the place. It is very much a hole-in-the-wall kind of restaurant, which is something I often enjoy. This is small: 3 tables and a small counter, on the corner of a tiny strip mall. You order at the counter, and within a few minutes your order will be ready. The menu is pretty straightforward: several kinds of fish fried in strips(not necessarily filets, as I found out) or chunks, fried shrimp, fried oysters, hushpuppies, and fries. Many items come in sandwich form, which is to say served with a couple slices of wheat bread.(Since I was introduced to fish sandwiches – other than Filet-o-fish – while living in Boston, I tend to assume that fish sandwiches will be on a spongy white roll – but no problem.) These items can be mixed and matched in several ways, outlined on very clear menus with lots of pictures. A few comments on the sides: hush puppies were pretty good. Fries were standard and a tad dry and hard. Condiments are provided in a bunch of little plastic cups that aren’t really adequate for the job. Standard set appears to be tartar sauce, Tabasco(or a similar, vinegary red hot sauce), as well as packets of ketchup – not nearly enough for the huge portions, though. Larger packets of mayo or tartar sauce would’ve been appreciated. I really would have liked actual condiments at the counter or tables, but it appears that they do most of their business as take-out, which is how I would probably plan to go back here. The salad, as noted, is a pile of mixed greens and a small plastic cup of Italian dressing. Food, when it arrives shortly after placing your order, comes in huge quantities in a styrofoam take-out box. The prices(about $ 7-$ 14) are extremely reasonable considering the huge portions – again, I think, weighing in favor of just planning on take-out. My friend definitely got the winning order tonight: he had the catfish and shrimp combo with fries and hushpuppies. The shrimp were medium-sized, not jumbo, but pretty tasty. The catfish was tender, crisp on the outside, and boneless. I had the sand dabs, which are a NorCal/Central Coast specialty, and I was a bit leery when I ordered them outside their native habitat. What I did not expect was having to debone the steaming hot little suckers with a plastic fork and my fingers. This was a pity, as they were in fact very tasty, but neither the heavy breading nor the single plastic fork were really conducive for deboning fish. The oysters were good, but not as good as the shrimp. Overall, I would come back if in the mood for fried seafood. I’d also like to try the chicken wings, which looked good. Charlie’s is cheap. efficient, and pretty good. Takeout is probably better than dining in, mainly because of the small space but also because you have access to a wider selection of condiments and utensils at home, should you need them.

Some of my friends eat here all the time, so I decided to give one tof their $ 5 lunches a try. I had the red snapper sandwich. It was deep fried, but not greasy. It came with a couple pieces of bread, so I guess you could make a sandwich out of it if you wanted to. On the side were some fresh greens. The good kind, not iceberg lettuce, but the deep greens. It came with hot sauce(which was just right), light salad dressing and tartar sauce. All on the side. I’m gonna’ go back and try their chicken. I hear it’s delicious! Oh, we called our order in and it was ready when we got there. I suggest you do the same. I hear it can get pretty crowded. Now you know why!
