I bookmarked Charlie Cox«To Try» two years ago, but like so many other businesses he just got buried on my list. It’s not until now, as I’m sifting through my thousand bookmarks that I realize that I actually have seen Charlie before. When Brandon D. and I were taking a walk by the tarpits and happened to see a seagull struggling to get free of its impending death, lots of kids and their parents stared on confused and upset when the Page Museum docents explained that it was too dangerous to save the bird. Charlie happened to be there playing his banjo, walking toward the asphalt lake, and it was enough to distract many of the kids away from the tragic scene to smile and dance. That was pretty cool. Helps to remember that no matter how bad things get, life goes on, and something to be cheerful about can be anywhere.

«I knew a man Bojangles and he’d dance for you In worn out shoes With silver hair, a ragged shirt, and baggy pants The old soft shoe He jumped so high, jumped so high Then he lightly touched down”* Charlie Cox: «Singer, Musician, Entertainer, Multi-Instrumentalist» specializing in Folk Music So his card reads. And we saw him entertain while he sang and strummed Bob Dylan’s «Blowin’ in the Wind», in front of the LACMA just past the stink of the tar pits. He didn’t mind the smell much, just as long as someone liked his songs and his playing. An old concertina box showed us that others appreciated his efforts as it was filled with change. Since there weren’t a lot of people out this chilly LA day, he stopped his playin’ to chat it up, told us that«Blowin’ in the Wind» was about newspapers and that the reason it wouldn’t rain too soon was because it required two levels of clouds and there was only one at the moment. I didn’t know this. I asked if he’d heard of Unilocal and he admitted he hadn’t and he started to play us some Pete Seeger and I told him he was as good on the banjo as he was on the guitar. He jumped so high, jumped so high, and said I should listen to him on the Mandolin. But the clouds grew mean and we didn’t have our raincoats so we said our goodbyes. It never rained though. You see, it takes two layers of clouds for that to happen. Charlie is available for parties, birthdays, galas or any other reason you might find for a musician with many talents.
