The Ben Maltz Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design is a free opportunity for anyone near LAX to see rotating exhibitions of world-class contemporary art. Park in the free visitor parking in the parking structure on the north side of La Tijera a half block west of Lincoln Blvd. Then find the Galef Center for Fine Arts(grey building). The one-room Ben Maltz Gallery is on the ground floor(to the right after entering). We came over the weekend to discover the STILL exhibition by Alison Saar(until November 17). It’s a haunting display of creative visions that evoke emotions tied to race and gender. Many of the pieces feature life-size sculptures of women. Some have antlers and one is even suspended upside down hanging by a rope tied around her feet. Another shows a black woman balancing a white woman on her head. It only takes about 20 – 30 minutes to appreciate the dozen or so pieces, but some of the imagery will stick with you much longer. The Ben Maltz Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Thursdays, it remains open until 7:00. The gallery is relatively unattended. We simply walked in, spent our time with each piece, and left without really having to interact with anyone … although I did sign up for their mailing list on a clipboard near the entrance. Near LAX and have an hour waiting to pick someone up at the airport? Consider a quick visit to the Ben Maltz Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design to expand your appreciation of contemporary art in a setting much more peaceful than the scene at Terminal 3.

*** A cool 3500sq-ft space on the campus of Otis College. *** It is free and open to the public for viewing Tues-Sat, 10−5pm. I strolled thru here today after eating pupusas and buying fruit at the Westchester Farmer’s Market across the way(Lincoln). As for the current exhibit(Todd Schorr), that dude is obviously talented w/paint but most likely disturbed in several ways? ;p *** Free prkg is available on street or garage off La Tijera. ***
