I went there at noon thirty and it was closed. No word why. I would have really liked to try it out. I’ll update review if they fix their policy on locking the door.

London Quality Taste, LA Consciousness. Truly authentic London style fish and chips. In some ways it’s even better than what you can find in London because Jason is a very knowledgable chef. We agreed that in London you will see a cod that is a slightly thinner, lighter, and flakier. However, what you wont find in London: hand picked humanely raised fish by a chef who knows his stuff. Handmade sauces from scratch. Handmade batter from scratch. Incredibly clean oil that is changed constantly. My girlfriend and I ordered the cod with traditional batter and an order of fish tacos. Delicious. Fish was moist, the batter was delicious not oily, great flavor. After finishing a whole fish my face was not covered in grease. Hands down the best hot sauce I’ve ever tasted. Think Red Rooster x 100 After cleaning our plates quickly, we decided we needed another order of fish tacos, and what Jason recommended, Cat Fish in the Chili batter. — Get it. Don’t ask questions. The amazing hot sauce is worked into the batter, the fish will defy what you think you know about catfish. I can’t wait to go back. You’re the man Jason! London Quality Taste, LA Consciousness.

Don’t know what happen to this place I really wanted to try their fish and chips. Unilocal says they are open but sign says closed. I received an massage from owner explaining the situation. Thanks for the communication Jason!

Best place in L.A. for Fish & Chips! Jason, the owner, has a passion for what he does, and is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet!

Great quality made by a dedicated lad who knows his business. Too bad the place is in a slow zone. Go get your expertly made, original UK/Irish style, fish & chips while they last!

I don’t understand the reviews for this place. Boyfriend and I got catfish and cod. The cod tasted a bit fishy and not fresh. Both of our dishes also tasted like they were fried in old oil. The place was a bit warm and not super clean. Guy behind the counter was very nice though.

my fish lost its jacket of batter, so I stuffed it with chips and poured the sauce in to it, and made a batter chip drip, left behind a lonely chunk of so called cod, and chppers, the cod was all slicked up with deep fry oil. grabbed it as i was driving, it was like two bites, at that point it was like it had been in a oil spill, that was funny, my cod just slipped out of the batter cover, I ate it any way , oh well the oil worked well for my dry hands ;; dumb place, do you have to eat this rubbish with a fork and control the fish so the batter stays in place, WTF, LoL goofy order of fish and chips LOL,

Tasty fish and chips! I had the chili Tilapia and liked it. Very friendly staff. It’s a small place and can get crowded. The fish was fresh and a decent size. I’ll be back.

Haven’t had excellent Fish & Chips in the Valley, until Batterfish. I learned about it through LA Eater’s Essential Guide to Valley Restaurants. Like the review said, it’s in a very unassuming spot on Ventura Blvd. Nuzzled in between office buildings in an area without much walking traffic, you’ll miss it unless you have the address. My order of Cod with traditional batter & Chips was tremendous. The have their own district beer batter, which was great. Because it’s served with one large piece of fish, it’s not finger food, but instead a fork and knife meal. I’m not a fan of tartar sauce, but I give it a taste at most places. Batterfish’s tartar sauce blew me away(in a very good way)! Perhaps because they make it fresh with slightly less eye-opening ingredients than the tartar on market shelves… it’s so good. The chips are also made fresh, as I saw the cook cutting potatoes into thick, long rectangles. The food was wonderful, but I have a few recommendations for the owners: 1) please buy sturdier knives and forks. You need to eat with them and the ones you have are flimsy; 2) please buy a squeeze bottle of ketchup(or have it in an easily accessible condiment container). Ketchup is currently available by packets only, and I do like my fries with ketchup. 3) Pay for someone to make your menu«wall art.» Right now it’s a mish-mash and hard to comprehend(simple once you figure it out). I was a bit disappointed to hear that Batterfish might be moving at some point to the City, but I get it. Instead of the Valley’s best Fish and Chips, it’ll become the City’s best Fish and Chips.

I’d been meaning to check out Batterfish for a while and have to say it met all my expectations. Hands down the best fish n chips in LA. In addition to have several tasty varieties of fish and batter, they make their own tartar sauce which was flavorful without being heavy. The staff is friendly and terrific. The traditional cod is a sure hit, but I really want to work my way through the other varieties. Next time I’m having the garlic ginger batter which I hear is pretty popular with catfish. Don’t wait to check it out for yourself. The place is a bit small as other people have mentioned, but you won’t be disappointed with the food.

I’ve been hemming and hawing about trying BatterFish even with its 4.5 Star rating and being a five minute drive from my house. Why you ask? Because the last thing I want for dinner especially after my 50 minute Equinox work out is fried heavy Fish and Chips. But, on this Saturday night with my wife working and me being by my lonesome I said what the hay and called my order in. On my first bite of my fried cod dipped in tartar sauce I new my fears we unfounded. This fish was as light as a feather. It was moist and delicious. I had to stop and think what gave me this impression that the dinner set in front of me would be as heavy as a brick. Ah yes, my last Fish and Chip meal was by the Tower Bridge in London off of a food truck and it was as heavy as a brick. Goes to show you, when something as notoriously heavy as fried fish is done right, for a different audience(demographic) it can be as clean as a whistle — and this was! The fries /chip were also. They were not in the least bit — heavy. My take on Fish and Chips goes back to the H. Salt and Tower Bridge days. Batter fish really cleaned-up this meal and changed my view on this British staple. BatterFish is small and you could drive by it in a lick. It has parking in the back which is good due to the fact it’s on Ventura Blvd. is one very busy street. The man working here this night(I believe it was the owner) was a Dubliner and had a most pleasant personality and accent. I liked this place. It has everything you want in a neighborhood eatery: Good Food Affordable Nice people working there Convenient Very helpful for us yanks who forgot or don’t know how to eat fish and chips

When you hear something that starts out as «Best of LA» and then«San Fernando Valley», you get a little suspicious… That’s the problem of living up here. We’re kind of the minor leagues compared to LA’s dining meccas of Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, West Hollywood and Downtown LA. Were often the butt of jokes in the food world. Fortunately, thanks to places like Scratch Bar, The Bellweather. Krua Thai and others, that’s improving. It’s not just touristy Casa Vega anymore. And then there’s Batterfish. It’s received a ton of acclaim recently. Once people find it, that is. The spot in on Ventura Blvd, but you could easily pass it. Really easily. Like I did on a Friday night driving around in circles(but it’s near the Benihana!) but once you do, it’s amazing. The place is small. Just a couple of tables. This is really a take away spot. Which is unfortunate, because you really should eat something like this as soon as you get it. Not drive back 10 – 15 minutes or more while everything starts to get cold and sog up. The chef /owner, Jason, is pretty amazing. We called in our order and he even said he’d wait a few minutes because I was coming in from Sherman Oaks, and he wanted me to get our Fish and Chips as hot as possible,. There’s four types of fish to pick from and five types of batter styles. For our first order, we pretty much stuck with the classic Cod and in my case, I ordered the Garlic Ginger batter. Got home and one issue I had was because the fish was sitting directly on top of the chips(OK, fries…) the fries got a bit soggy. Not tremendously, but you could see the problem immediately. I would have placed some paper or something between the fish and the fries. What we did try really was amazing. For about nine bucks, you get one large fillet of fish and a bunch of fries. My girlfriend complained slightly that there weren’t enough fries, but hey, these fries are fresh cut and tasted great. Rather have that than some lame frozen shoestrings. Fish was exactly what I expected. Thick English style batter, great, flaky cod. Can’t complain. The place pretty much fries everything. It’s kind of like Chip Shop in Harlem. You can even get a Deep Fried Candy Bar, if you’d like. I wonder if you can come in and get anything deep fried. Deep Fried Deep Dish Pizza, anyone? Don’t know. I’m kind of amazed with all the press, more people don’t come here. Yea, it’s the Valley and yea, it’s not the easiest place to find. Doesn’t help they don’t really do Social Media. The Facebook link from their website is dead and the link to their Google+ profile is listed as «Default Name». Well, that’ll get new customers, for sure! No online ordering of any type either, although the owner is really nice on the phone. But still, this is 2016! Also, I’d like to see them do larger platters. Sure, the prices of 10 bucks or less for fish and chips is great, but you only get one filet. I’d like to be able to upgrade. Definitely will come back here. Not sure I’ll do a deep fried burger, but I’ll definitely do some catfish(used to live in the South) sometime!

DELICIOUS fish n chips! Probably one of the best I’ve ever had. It’s all made fresh to order(he hand batters the fish and it’s not those pre-fozen fish sticks) which is really difficult to find these days. I ordered the cod in traditional batter, it was perfection. So yummy! Coleslaw was good too, which is saying something from me cause I’ve never really liked coleslaw. It’s not drenched in mayo and it was also made fresh! The owner is friendly and attentive. Will definitely be coming back! :) A definite must try if your in the mood for fish n chips!

I didn’t really like the place that much… It was quick(good) even though only one man behind the counter. I was so surprised that I asked the guy that worked there and he said it’s a moms and pops place and he was the manager. I am good with that. Not sure how this would be on a crowded weekend but I let someone else worry about that . My friend liked the garlic batter on his cod and said he would give the place 4 stars . I am debating between 1 and 2 stars. The cole slaw was very good(5*) so that bumped it up to a 2 star . They have«mushy«peas and I wanted to try some but i couldn’t as I was told everything was made to order from scratch –OK — i like that — but I never had mushy peas before and without a taste i opted for the baked beans. I wonder if beans are home made ? The coleslaw was home made according to the«manager» . The fish(COD) was a bit in the raw-ish side, the fries were browned and somewhat over cooked and the batter was too . Was greasy a bit, and I was underwhelmed. For a small place that only has a few items on the menu … The fish should be mind blowing. Millie’s diner on Vanowen has better fish, I am sorry. The manager seemed cool, but I probably won’t recommend the place or come back unless the main course — fried fish — gets better.

The place is kinda disappointing. You do get a large piece of fish with plenty of fries. The batter came off my fish once I got my order. What’s the point of getting fish and chips then. The fries were good. Oh well, life goes on.

I have to say I was so excited and intrigued by this place after all the great reviews. Granted, this place does have good fish and chips. I tried a traditional battered cod and a lemon basil battered. Definitely go with traditional if you’re deciding between the two. What left a bad taste in my mouth was the fact that only one person was working there and it was pretty busy. After all, it was lunch time on Saturday. The guy at the front took our order and then prepared to make it. We probably waited about 20 minutes from the time we ordered till we got our food. But the thing is our friend joined us, a little delayed due to traffic(hey, it’s LA) and the guy working there couldn’t take his order since he was busy cooking our food. I don’t understand how there could only be one worker on a Saturday! Plus, their soda machine didn’t work and they didn’t have any sides available besides the chips. I really wanted to try the mushy peas! Parking wasn’t the best either, but the biggest disappointment was that our friend didn’t get to order because we had some place to go right after, and we would have had to wait another 20 minutes till he got his food(which would be way after we got ours.) I’m not sure I would return for this reason.

It was a bitter disappointment! My fish was overcooked and extremely oily! I chose the Cod, and it was just saturated with oil and very chewy. The Batter was cooked to a dark brown color. The portion was approximately 5−½″ in length, 2−½″ wide, and ¾″ thick. The meager amount of fries would easily fit into an 8 ounce cup. Price $ 9.95 Service-Good Parking-Horrible! No street parking in front of restaurant from 3:30pm-7:00pm weekdays. Perhaps a different cook prepared the food to merit the 4−½star rating. I did not experience anything close to those rave reviews.

Small establishment on busy Ventura Blvd. we went on Saturday at noon. They make the fish when you order so be patient. Ordered the traditional, Chili, and the Curry. By far the Curry was the best. Great batter and taste. Preferred the catfish over the cod. Service was great. Would definitely return.

Although Batterfish has only been in existence for about a year, I have read about it many times and couldn’t wait to try it. Good fish and chips in Encino? Bring it on! We were not disappointed! Delicious cod in traditional batter was crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. FLAVOR. Tartar sauce was homemade and subtle but tasty. Fries were cooked perfectly with the skin left on. We also tried the fish tacos. Equally crispy and flavorful, but on a delicious tortilla with all of the accoutrements. Price points were ridiculously reasonable. $ 7 – 10. The owner, Jason was friendly and enthusiastic. No wonder with such a great product that is surprisingly hard to find in this city by the water … This is a «modern» fish and chip shop as it offers unusual and creative batters — chili, curry, lemon/basil and garlic ginger — as well as battered burgers, sausages and a candy bar! Can’t wait to go back and try some more.

I’ve never been a fan of fish and chips because it was too greasy, mediocre, flavorless, and/or batter sucked. After trying BatterFish, I’m a fan. All my complaints about fish and chips went out the window after my first bite. 1) There wasn’t any oil dripping or oozing out. The plate didn’t have any excess oil on it. 2) The batter was crispy, firm, and held its integrity with the fish of your choice(Cod, Salmon, Tilapia, catfish). 3) You can choose which type of batter you want(Lemon-Basil, Garlic-Ginger, Curry, Chili) 4) Depending on fish, price can range between $ 9-$ 12 It’s a small spot with a limited tables and chairs. Parking: Free in the back. Metered parking on Ventura Blvd.
