I love this place. The food is AMAZING, the service is FANTASTIC and they’re open for dinner.

I’ve been wanting to try this place for a long time. My first and last experience was horrible. There was nothing«french» about the meal that I ordered. I ordered the steak with shallots and french fries. I told the waiter that I wanted my steak medium rare and he said okay. Though when my steak arrived I was horrified to find that the steak was a, flat thin and tough skirt steak, there was nothing medium rare about it, you probably can’t even cook that type of steak anything rarer than well done if you tried. The meat was tough and flavorless and under seasoned, and the shallots were just chopped, sautéed in olive oil and carelessly spread over the steak. I was extremely disappointed. Also, the service was very lacking, there were only 3 tables occupied, but I sat most of my meal with an empty glass because the waiter was more occupied with chatting with the other employees than servicing his tables.

This restaurant is a jem! We walked in on a Saturday morning. No wait because it’s off the beaten path. The kitchen staff waved hi as we walked to the upstairs seating. They have a balcony outside with about 4 tables. We were alone up there and it was the perfect place for a beautiful relaxing brunch with family. These chefs know their way with an eggs benedict. Seriously, if you get one thing there, get that. The price is right, the staff is very friendly, and the food is delicious!

Definitely gets 5 stars in my opinion!!! I called ahead that morning to reserve a party of 15, I called when we were running 30 minutes late and cook didn’t know about it. minor details easily cleared up. When we showed up the waiter/host told us that they would be closing for the evening to accommodate our party. The last time that happened to me I was in Switzerland, merci! The host really made the effort to take care of us, he was funny and personable speaking French phrases and handing out one liners to everyone in the group. It felt like an old friend was serving us. Part of his charm was that he wasn’t really trying to do anything but be himself! The upstairs dining area was our private party room and at about $ 20 a plate what a deal! We of course made them happy by ordering half a dozen bottles of wine. The food was outstanding and quickly prepared, everyone loved the French Onion soup and I had the trout which was pretty solid. The escargot was great too, buttery and well seasoned as expected. My GF a caprese aficionado signed off on her approval too. The chicken that was ordered was quickly eaten by some scavengers pretending to be sharing friends :) This little boutique restaurant was not perfect by any means but that was part of its charm, our group was thoroughly impressed and happy when we walked out… and yes for a minute I felt like I was in Southwestern Switzerland! How much better could it possibly be? «Alueta jonte alueta, Alueta jonte prumeray Jonte prumeret letet Jonte prumeret letet Et letet Et letet Ayyy oh,»

Bad service… and we were the only two people in there??? If you have a small menu it better be off the charts, it wasn’t…far from it. Has potential but seems like it’s penny pinching. Put some effort into cleaning… the place is absolutely dirty. Too many mish mosh of décor. Needs an overhaul of aesthetics. Food very bland and poorly prepared. Wine less that average. Stick to the bottled beer. Prices are higher than the quality of food and drink.

This was recommended to me by a friend to try for brunch, but after having a look at the menu I wanted to come for lunch. So I headed here with a friend for nice Saturday afternoon lunch. There wasn’t much street parking, so we ended up parking in a lot right across the street for a $ 4 flat rate, which isn’t too bad and definitely worth it for this place. It’s a small little joint with indoor, patio, and upstairs veranda seating. We chose to eat outside since it was such a nice day and the sun was out. There were plenty of seats to choose from. Fresh bread and butter was brought out, which reminded me of those days in Paris and Nice where we would break a fresh baguette and just eat it. My friend and I both decided to get the half sandwich half soup combo… I chose the pâté sandwich with the French Onion soup. It’s a little bit extra to have the French onion in the combo, but it’s totally worth it. The French Onion soup was amazing and pretty authentic. It was served properly with the melted cheese layer covering the bowl on top with a piece of bread and fresh onion pieces in the soup underneath. The cheese wasn’t too gooey, but the perfect texture and easy to eat. I love the pieces that are a little burnt that stick to the side of the bowl and that feeling of puncturing the cheese layer with your spoon as the soup floods the top. C’était délicieux =) The pâté sandwich was good, but it wasn’t anything super special. There were two types of pâté inside and it had some spicy mustard and cornichons inside. Oddly enough, the bread that it was served on wasn’t as soft as the bread they brought out on the side. But the portion was still rather big and filling. Lastly, I had to try their escargots. These were also delicious and authentic. The order had about 5 or 6 pieces covered in the garlic and butter sauce. I dipped the leftover bread into the sauce… just yum ^_^. Service was great. We got our menus and drinks promptly and our order not too long thereafter. Even though we sat outside, the waiter still came to check on us. Wouldn’t mind coming back to try the brunch and dinner menu.

Outside of France this place is it! The waiter was super nice and friendly, the food: croque monsieur with fries and french onion soup were heavenly. Close your eyes to hear the traffic trickle by, dogs walking by with their clicking and the smells of good food. Give yourself an hour to just sit and watch the world slip by!

What a great little discovery. I was walking back from the fashion district and saw this adorable restaurant on the way home. It was nestled in this little peninsula area sandwiched between two gradually intersecting streets. I looked it up and decided to go check it out. The hubby and I sat in the outside patio where we had a view of all the various people walking by with their dogs while I sipped on my morning coffee. We started off with one of the best bowls of mushroom soup I’ve ever had. It was full of mushroom flavor, seasoned perfectly, not too rich with unnecessary fillers, simple, and delicious. Then out came my goat cheese salad for $ 10.95. Characteristic of French food I thought that the salad was going to be a small little thing but this salad was a full-blown American portion, dare I say almost too American? I dug in. The goat cheese was creamy & delicious, the greens were fresh, and I was very full. Of course we had dusted off a whole basket of bread a few minutes previously so that definitely added to my state. My husband had the half sandwich special for $ 9.95 that came with fries. He chose the steak sandwich and to me, it looked like a full sandwich. Really? That’s a half? The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and the sandwich as a whole was pretty decent. The hubby was pleased. In conclusion if you want a bit of French in your diet but your wallet is a bit slim and your stomach is famished, this is the spot for you.

Yummy yummy yummy! And GREAT service! Came here with a friend on a Sunday for brunch. Unfortunately, we came too late as they were now only serving lunch :(. We were about to leave for another destination but decided to stay because of the cute French décor. We were first seated on the first floor but noticed a stairway. We asked the server if we were able to be seated upstairs instead. He was more than happy to allow us to and boy, were we glad we asked. We were the only ones in the room. The room had huge glass windows overlooking the street so there was a lot of natural light shining through. I felt like I was dining in Paris! Simple décor and lots of paintings of France. Of course since it was Sunday, we started off with Mimosas($ 8). For appetizers, we had Escargots($ 8.95) and their Soup Du Jour($ 5.95) which was Cream of Asparagus. The Escargots were perfect. It had the perfect balance of butter, garlic, and parsley. My favorite was dipping the bread in the sauce… my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Their cream of asparagus was just decent. nothing special. Next, we ordered the Charcuterie Plate($ 14.95). I’m not an expert on the different types of pâté so this was definitely of interest to me. If I can remember correctly, they served 4 different types of pâté to sample and olives. This was recommended to us by the server so give this a try if you want to try something new :). For our entrée, we shared the Salmon A L’Ancienne($ 14.95) with fries. The salmon was delicious and cooked just the way I like it – melt-in-your-mouth meat and crispy skin. I can’t remember the sauce but it had capers in it. D E L I S H! The fries were thinly sliced. I have no complaints for this dish. I repeat, .your.mouth. The server must have been feeling extra nice that day because we had another round of mimosas on the house! Towards the end of our meal, we noticed that the music was turned off. We end up finding out that they were closed until dinner time. We didn’t even realize this as they made no rude gestures to kick us out… like many restaurants do. Overall, this place has the charming French Café feel, great food, and wonderful service.

This café is next-door to a friend’s place and I’ve gone their with different owners. Consistently pleasant staff has been my experience. I have eaten there for weekend brunch/breakfasts only and have been pretty satisfied with my choices. It’s locale makes it a shoe-in for semi-regular dining. There is street parking and parking lots locally. If you’re planning on a breakfast and short walk over to some local business — it’s a decent stop along the way.

Brunch on a Saturday, service was slow. Ordered the Smoked Salmon Omelette. Food was cold when it was served, salad was wilted from the heat when the food WAS hot. The fries were done well but not well enough to carry the meal… Cute café… but had higher hopes.

I can’t believe I found this gem on my way to Little Tokyo. Angelique is an adorable brick corner café with a bright red door. The icicle lights hanging from the overhangs caught my eye, and my sister and I decided to stop here for dinner instead. Stepping into Anglique felt like I was being transported to a streetside café in Paris. There is definitely a sense of romance to this charming place. The large windows provide a great view of many people walking their small dogs(I counted something like 12 small dogs passing by with their owners). Parking is pretty easy for dinner because street parking is free after a certain time(6PM?), and there were plenty of open spaces. I ordered the Salmon A L’Ancienne. It was so delicious, I’m still dreaming about it now. The sauce on the salmon was amazing! The salmon came with a salad lightly dressed with a vinaigrette, and on the side of the salmon were some veggies(string beans, asparagus, and carrots) as well as rice. My sister ordered the Chicken Porcini Sausage Sandwich, which was also really good. It came with the option of fries or a salad. Leaving, I felt like I had discovered a secret place in this quiet part of the fashion district downtown. And I can’t wait to return again… perhaps for brunch.

Ever want to eat breakfast in a tiny little french cottage? Well too bad kid, you live in LA. But this place is pretty damned close. I mean, there’s french food and french music and pictures of french stuff like towers other phallic things. But without the snooty attitude from the waitstaff that one might find in, say, Paris when one, say, went there their Junior year in high school to, say, a small little café to get some food and perhaps was treated like shit by an older gentlemen who seems annoyed that a stupid American had the audacity to walk into such a wonderful French establishment. Wow. Rant much? Anywho, though I was not impressed with my instant hot cocoa, I was very pleased with the croissant. I was especially enamored with the french toast and fresh squeezed orange juice… a surprising big meal for a place so small and, you know, Frenchy. So next time you get a hankering for some highfalutin’ café-in-the-middle-of-a-cool-big-city but don’t want to suffer the self esteem injuring encounter with actual French waiters, give this place a try. You’ll save on airfare anyway. ;)

Trop Bön! This brunch spot is not only original in food, but location as well. Stumble upon it in the middle of a rather intense intersection, locked in the middle of good ol’ fashioned DTLA. Dining on the outside patio to really partake in the luxurious weather of Los Angeles. Excellent. The potatoes are above the best. The service is friendly, hearty, and quaint. I cannot express how much I enjoyed coming here. I ordered the Merguez Omellette, but since they ran out of Sausage casing, I had to replace my saucisse with turkey. I did not complain. Ratatouille Omelette mixed with Turkey left me with a great alternative. The food is great, the pricing is adequate. But what I really liked, was the environment. For a few hours on a Sunday morning, I felt wisked away from my humdrum life in Los Angeles. I was in a foreign spot. Embracing the mildly cloudy skies, the sun peeping through the grays. It was awesome. DTLA, I heart you.

Angelique Café is in a charming location in a bit«nicer» area of downtown. The building itself is in the middle of a split between Spring and Main. Ever since I first saw this perfect location I knew I had to eat there. *clears throat* Now lets begin the review… I ordered the strawberry crêpe. Uhm… it was a joke. They didn’t use real strawberries; no, that would taste too good. Instead they used what tasted like store bought strawberry jam. Gross. The only reason I forced it down was because I was about to die of hunger. As if the food weren’t bad enough, the service was probably the worst I’ve ever had. When we arrived we asked if we could sit upstairs on the balcony. The guy said yes and we walked up stairs. We were sitting up there for a good 15 minutes before we were even handed our menus. Finally we put in our order, our«food» came, we ate, and sat back to wait for the check. We actually started a timer to see how long it would take. After 37 minutes our check arrived. After another 22 minutes we finally gave our check to a different waiter because ours was nowhere in sight. After another 12 minutes we saw the waiter we gave our check to leaving the restaurant. Uhm… where is our waiter with our credit cards?! We finally waited ANOTHER7 minutes before finally marching downstairs and demanding to see our waiter. We were finally handed our check with no apologies for the extremely long wait. I will never be returning to this restaurant again. Congratulations, Angelique Café, on my first one star review.

«I know this charming little French place,» he said, winking at me. «I just have to drive around to find it. It’s hidden in plain sight where two streets split.» He tells me that this was one of his favorite restaurants when he worked in downtown LA. Always charming, he knows how to find places with a sense of romance to them. He pulls right up and lucks into a parking spot just a few steps from the front door. It’s simply charming. Situated at a fork in the road, the two story brick building is adorable, surrounded by a few big trees and replete with a small patio for outdoor dining. Thoroughly charmed by my prince and his restaurant choice, we sit outside on a lovely sunny day, ready to relax and enjoy a meal. We ate: — Quiche Lorraine and a small salad — Proscuitto sandwich with balsamic vinegar The owner makes his own charcuterrie. How can you go wrong with that? Lovely for breakfast and lunch, the food is 3.5, service is 3, and ambiance is 4.5. I give them a 4 because we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Time to go, he holds may hand on the way back to the car. «We always have fun together, don’t we?» he asks. I smile as he opens the car door for me.

I’d gone past this building several times, usually on the DASH bus, and kept forgetting to go back and actually check it out. Finally made it! It’s a cute place, inside, outside, and upstairs. Staff was nice: waiter Paul especially knowledgeable about both food and the building, which always adds to my enjoyment. We had come for a late lunch(around 2:30) so there were not many other customers, and he took the time to chat with us. The fries were PERFECT. Hot and crisp and skinny and still fluffy inside. The salads are dressed with a vinaigrette lightly flavored with mustard. The greens are a little spicy. We could tell our salads were freshly made: the leaves were not at all wilted or limp. The goat cheese sandwich was big enough for us to share, and tangy with the cheese and the balsamic vinegar used as dressing instead of mustard & mayo.(See picture.) One of the lunch specials was leg of lamb. It came as a big slice, beautifully flavored, and pairing beautifully with the mild mustard sauce(not a combination I’d had before, but it works). It also came with green beans, mixed with a few grilled bell peppers and eggplant cubes. We looked at the breakfast menu, and found several things to return for.(I’m not so good at getting dressed and heading out *before* eating, but they have their b’fast menu all day on Saturdays and Sundays, so that’s what I’ll do.) The big jar of Nutella on the edge of the kitchen service window is beckoning me: apparently, it goes on crepes. Better and better! Not a cheap meal(most entrees are in the $ 11 — $ 16 range, even for lunch) but big portions, and great flavor.

It was ok. Ordered the eggs scandinavian(eggs benedict with salmon instead of ham for $ 9.95) and a make your own omelet with mushrooms, spinach and feta cheese($ 8.95). Both dishes came with a green salad and roasted potatoes. On the good side, very large portions, the coffee was good, and it came with a bread basket of a sliced baguette. Not that you need that much bread for breakfast, but we ate it anyway. On the not so good side, the food was just ok. Nothing stood out about the meal, and I didn’t even really want to finish my salmon… which says something because I love salmon. The best part of the place is really the atmosphere. It was nice to sit outside on a beautiful Sunday morning, and despite its location in Downtown LA, the restaurant itself is like an oasis in the desert. Maybe I’ll come back to try lunch, or another breakfast dish.

This one is for Anjo. I was in the neighborhood with my friends Kevin and Lee making a little errand at USC, and Lee suggested this place because we were getting hungry and it was prime brunch time. We scored some really close by street parking. Now let me interject for a second here. This particular part of town is a little… «suspect». It’s just south of the jewelry district and is on the edge of the fashion district. Anybody who is very familar with downtown knows exactly what I’m talking about. I mean, it’s not like there’s drug deals going down right in front of us nor are people getting chased or whatever, but it’s not the cleanest part of town is what I think I mean. Walking in and sitting down, I was almost in shock at the quality of this place and it’s location. I would have expected a place like this to be like over by Staples Center or closer to the Chandler Pavilion or MOCA. We sat down and I took a moment to take the place in. The décor is pretty simple, with a small sconce-ish fountain and paintings hanging on the walls. The server greeted us with some menus and took our beverage order. They had fresh squeezed orange juice, a small selection of teas and coffees. I opted for somethng called«African nectar». It was pretty good. Light with a mild herbiness to it with a mellow and pleasant floral aftertaste. Yes, I just described a tea as if it were a wine. This reminds me, I’m gonna google this and see if I can buy it anywhere. Their breakfast menu is simple. Offering a bunch of light options such as cereal and oatmeal, and a just omelettes. They had a smoked salmon omelette with dill. That sounded good but I wanted something a little bit heartier. They have build your own omelette option for $ 9.95, with your choice of 3 ingredients or 75 cents for each additional ingredients. I got mushrooms, tomatoes, cheddar, and decided to try something called merguez(yeah, I think that’s what it was), which was a lamb and beef sausage seasoned with cumin. It was interesting but good and the cumin wasn’t overpowering. The omelettes all came with home fries(which I personally thought could’ve been a little more crispy) and a side of mixed greens with what I believed to be a honey mustard vinaigrette. Everything was good and I was very satisfied. On weekends they offer breakfast«specialties» such as french toast and eggs benedict. Our drinks were never empty and that’s always a plus in my book. I definitely would like to come back for lunch and try their sandwiches. Considering the immediate neighborhood its in, this is definitely a diamond in the rough.
