Can’t really comment on this place. Unilocal thinks I can, but I’ve never been here.

I can’t think of a better place to spend my money after a long day of classes at Laguardia. The lunch special is awesome and to have a place that caters to my vegetarianism is like having all my prayers answered!!! I even splurge sometimes and get a fresh juice from them(beet, ginger, kale) in addition to my meal! This is definitely the place to visit if you are trying to ball on a budget while still eating flavorful, relatively healthful, meals!

Really, it is difficult to bash a $ 5 curry plate. The food is, in a word, unusual. The flavors and tastes defy the typical Indian food fare. So, there are good days and not so good days at Spicy Mela. For example, I really enjoyed a recent offering of Kale cooked with spices. Very creative! On the other hand, the veggie chunk curry left me quizzical. Perhaps this is a place that you need to give some time to find itself. In the meantime, they serve an important role in an area of Long Island City that is something of a food desert.

Great spot for a quick bite. I only stopped by once late in the afternoon to get a Samosa, which was great. The owner was friendly and talked me through their menu while giving me the change. They have Dosas which I can’t wait to go back and try. If the Samosa was any indication, those should be great too. And this place is a stone’s throw away from the SCA and LaGuardia CC.

I wanted to support a local small business, but this place has a long way to go. I got their special of a vegetable and a meat. The palak paneer is nothing but creamed spinach with cheese chunks added directly to it(usually they are seasoned and pan fried before), I could taste no Indian flavor at all, all the spices are missing. The chicken tikka masala is sad, you barely get any chicken and the sauce tastes like a mix of cream and some chilly peppers and nothing more. I had less that half of the food, it is that bad. You cannot help but wonder if they even have an experienced cook. I give one more star because the price is really low.

Cozy little spot to grab some lunch. Owner is very kind and attentive & will stop to make small talk with you :) prices aren’t to be beat, either — everything’s all around 5 or 6 bucks and it’s a lot of food. Definitely a fan!

Just wanted do some updating and comment that they have continued to expand their menu. The lunch special is still the same super-bargain $ 5, but their selection of other dishes has recently included lamb(vindaloo, it seems like to me) and the option of substituting chapati if you feel like avoiding rice for any reason. Their special of one chicken dish plus one vegetable plus an order of naan comes in at $ 7 and is as good a value and comes up to the high flavor standard of the curries that they have been serving since they opened at the end of the summer. I eat there 2 – 3 times a week and have never been disappointed in their constantly varying menu.

The Lunch special is pretty good, 2 entrees and rice for 6 $. The entrees themselves are good but not great. The owner is SO friendly and engaging, he makes me laugh every time I go in. The rest of the employees are nice but unremarkable. If you do not know a lot about Indian food, just ask! They will let you try stuff, and they will explain. They have Dosa and Idli here, which are a little more rare on Indian food menu’s(everyone always wants curry :/) Their Masala Chai tea is great for a cold day, and they will soon be able to take credit/debit cards if they don’t already. Perfect for lunch.

I had Spicy Mela for the first time today and I LOVEDIT! The food was so tasty! I am not a vegetarian, but I could certainly become one if this is the type of food I can expect. Excellent addition to our neighborhood!

Still only two reviews? This place is great! If you’re not into vegetarian and you’ve never had a dosa, then you have to try one. Delicious and made fresh(no meat, but you won’t miss it — it may even push you over the edge). This place is such a great addition to the block. Now they just need one in Sunnyside!

Not too sure about this place. Seems a little seedy. Let me explain. Its a brand new place, big, and pretty clean. There is only one small steam table/main counter with about 6 different dishes which aren’t even that filled. No menu. No clear pricing. You walk in and your greeted by some guy who takes your order and walks the entire distance of the place to get to the back door. This happens repeatedly while your waiting for your food. Seems and looks ineffective. Food is nothing special. It looks as if someone had the idea to open a place but had no experience or help in the field at all. What a let down.
