I go to the Santa Barbara Farmers’ Market every Tuesday, and love it. Most of the people at the stands are at least civil, and some, like the women at Peacock Farm, are really friendly and helpful. But I had a really negative experience today. I was passing Tutti Frutti farms, and remembered they sell to Von’s, I bought an heirloom tomato at Von’s(of all places) that was excellent, it was from Tutti Frutti, so I walked in and noticed they have«heirloom spinach». I didn’t know what that was, hadn’t heard of it, so I did the natural thing for a potential paying customer: I asked the guy behind the counter about it. I don’t know where they got this guy,(about 37=40 years old, tall, short goatee) but they need to get someone working there who knows how to speak to customers. I asked the guy what was the difference between regular spinach and«heirloom», and he mumbled something about it cooks differently, well you just have to eat it, and he was really rude and seemed bored and annoyed that I dared to ask a question about the spinach. He didn’t seem to want to be there, and didn’t seem interested in helping me understand this product. I found his attitude really really offensive, and I see that the only other review mentions customer service too, so it’s not just me. This guy was basically a real jerk, and of course I left without buying anything, nor would I ever buy anything from Tutti Frutti Farms again, I don’t care how«good» their products it, lots of other farms at the Farmers’ Market have great products AND they know how to treat customers so the customer wants to come back and buy from them. It was appalling to me that anyone would speak to a customer like this guy did. I really hope the owner of Tutti Frutti reads Unilocal so he can get someone else to work that stand. I will certainly tell everyone I know not to deal with Tutti Frutti Farms. I expect much more from the Farmers’ Market, part of the fun is speaking directly to the farmers who grow the produce, who should be the most knowledgeable, and SHOULD be excited about their product and happy to share with customers. Epic fail for Tutti Frutti.

Tutti Frutti Farms sets up at various farmers’ markets throughout California. I usually see them at the Hollywood market on Sundays and at the Wednesday market in Santa Monica. This certified organic vendor has been around since 1988 and offers a slew of seasonal goodies. Being the picky shopper that I am, I usually only drop by for a couple of items like fennel bulbs, English peas, and butternut squash. Quality is good(you can get their products from a CSA), but customer service could be a little better. There’s just something a little weird about talking to a customer about how only certain ethnic minorities like a certain vegetable… and why you think it’s weird because it’s not a great vegetable… a tad off-putting, in my opinion.
