I preface with the fact that the two stars represent food… not service! Decided to have the Cantonese Roast Duck on noodles. There was certainly no skimping on the quantity of food, but the flavors were bland. The duck was very tender, but had little to no flavor. The noodles were pretty chewy and stuck together. I was not a fan of the peanut salad; it had a sour taste that did not sit well with me. My boyfriend ate the Firebird, which was much more flavorful, but certainly not worth a three-chili spice rating. All in all, the food is nowhere near worth the price. On a positive note, the service was very friendly!

I had the fire bird and the 3 chili peppers next to it on the menu was a total lie, it wasn’t spicy at all and didn’t even deserve 1 chili pepper. It was still good though, as was the jasmine tea. The tofu appetizer and the cheesecake wonton for dessert were really good. The service was friendly but slow and I had to work really hard to get the waitresses’s attention and ask several times if I needed something. The portion size was big but still didn’t warrant the price tag, not in Overland Park.

Awesome food, people are nice. We take out frequently around town and find most places are careless about what goes out. They were very organized and noted each item in bag. 5 * food 5* take out

Love this place and the people, Great food. Same price lunch and dinner. I wish they had discounted lunch specials with slightly smaller portions.

Very tasty Chinese cuisine with a lively atmosphere. They really excel at making their dumplings, which I would highly recommend ordering.

Update from second visit: still worth 4 stars but thinking maybe it’s not for me. I tried the firebird chicken again, but chose noodles instead of rice after watching DDD and wanted to get exact dish I saw. Again, not spicy at all and has three chilli pepper icons indicating it’s a hot item. I think maybe noodles aren’t great for take away since they were all squished together so got mostly clumps when I tried to grab some with my chop sticks. They also seemed doughy. Chicken was good quality. And portion size was huge; I ate til I was full and barely made s dent in it. Very friendly service. First visit: I saw this place on diners drive ins and dives and was stoked to try it on a business trip. I ordered takeout for the hotel– fire pepper chicken and veggie dumplings. The pepper fire chicken was very good but not spicy at all– maybe I need to ask for hot next time; I love spicy, so while good flavor, did not have enough spice for me. I did not prefer the veggie dumplings– not a lot of flavor and a little doughy. I only ate one and tossed the rest. Maybe l will give a different variety a try next time. I’ll be back, good quality food; and friendly service.

THESPICYGARLICWONTONSAREAMAZING I WOULDEATTHISEVERYDAYIF I COULDANDIFTHEREWERESOMEGREENSONTHESIDETOMAKESURE I COULDYOUKNOW, POOFROMTIMETOTIME. Other than that, everything else we ordered was quite mediocre. My coworker and I got a chicken dish and a duck dish(see? they were so far from being memorable I can’t even remember which ones we got. I just remember it was on the right side of the menu — unhelpful I know). The duck was not the roasted duck I was hoping it would be and the noodles were mediocre. I ordered the green bean bubble tea, which is usually not a flavor restaurants/cafes serve unless they’re rull authentic. It tastes pretty good but a little artificial. The tapioca balls were decent. All in all, SPICYGARLICWONTONS. FOREVER. 4LYFE.

One of our all time favorite restaurants in Kansas City. From the ambience to the amazing food, this is our«go to» place for dinner and bringing out of town guests.

Is there really such a fish called a blue koi? I honestly don’t know but I am so GLAD there is a restaurant by that name! much enjoy the Blue Koi. I love the dumplings but did not try them on my last visit. I tried the Chinese Pot Roast and it was delicious. The noodles were cooked just right and were homemade. The pot roast itself were flavorful and extremely tender. Definitely a repeat dish. I must go more often because there is so much on the menu I want to try. Next time I want the duck. The atmosphere is very pleasant and soothing. It is not overly decorated and it is conducive to good conversation. There was no loud music or people. Very soothing and pleasant. The wait staff was incredible. They gave us great recommendations and honest feedback. I loved the personal hot tea service. So nice. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Everything is done well. The atmosphere, the service, the food are all great. You will not be disappointed.

Tried their famous fire bird chicken which tasted very delicious. It’s a bit on the hotter side with a good punch. Guy Fieri was right about this place :). Definitely on the top of the Chinese restaurants I tried. PS: Don’t forget to get their Chinese beer :).

This is a favorite lunch spot! Excellent and fast service always. I’ve never been disappointed with anything I’ve ordered on the menu. My favorites are the crispy tofu with spicy awesome sauce, the vegetarian dumplings, the wonton soup, and the almond chicken asparagus. If you’re ever lucky enough to be there when they are offering the spicy chicken with spicy buns special(it’s not on the menu) be sure to get it… delicious! I also always like to get a bubble tea smoothie to go after my meal. A great treat to enjoy after a great meal!

A must try is their Fire Bird!(I highly recommend the duck but I’ve heard good things about the chicken too). I also like their dumplings, both the fried and boiled versions, as well as the scallion pancakes. Overall friendly service and a low key ambiance.

Prompt, friendly service by the server. We loved the wide selection of tea and enjoyed the presentation very much. We had an order of steamed dumplings as our appetizer. It wasn’t as raving as the other reviews– I found it good but unremarkable. I ordered the firebird with tofu instead of chicken. The portion was massive– I could have easily had 2 very filling meals from just one order. Good flavor– not as spicy as I would have liked. My husband ordered the dumpling soup. Again, crazy large order and he was unable to finish it. It had the right ingredients but the flavor was, again, unremarkable. We were full but couldn’t pass up cheesecake filled fried wontons, so we got them to go. Even hours later– these wontons were out of this world! It’s a must-try. Crispy wontons filled with creamy cheesecake with chocolate sauce to dip in. YUM.

There chicken lettuce wraps are tasty and the awesome sauce is good but I don’t see what everyone is so excited about with the tofu or dumplings. Still it was pretty good.

This place is ace! I was in town for work and picked up. First night took out a dish and salad. Everything about it is high quality. Fresh ingredients. Even the house salad and dressing were excellent. The dressing was garlicky and freshly made. The curry was excellent. Send time in town. It’s good enough that when I come here, I’m staying nearby. Damn yummy.

I love Blue Koi and this location is just as good as the Westport location. There are so many astoundingly good things on the menu, but I always feel a strong pull toward their steamed dumplings. They’re always good and they’re BIG, so that once they’re consumed, you wonder if you can fit in more food. But then the Firebird arrives(my favorite Blue Koi dish) and you can’t turn away from the Firebird! I usually get it with duck because yum. The Firebird with duck is chock full of juicy flavorful pieces of duck. Once in a while, when I feel like being extra good, I get it with tofu, and it’s amazing with tofu, too. I’ve had their pot roast and it’s excellent as well: Tender and juicy meat infused with a great flavor. Other standouts on the menu include the Ants on a Tree and the Cantonese Roast Duck. One of my favorite things about Blue Koi is you can get your choice of bubble tea with a shot of whatever liquor you’d like. I’m partial to either the coconut with rum or the dark chocolate with rum. Service is always fast and friendly. The décor is nice with lots of windows and plants.

I wanted to love this place because of its authenticity to Chinese culture. I’m from Hing Kong, and I must say the selection for teas were very traditional, and the menu was concise. The dumplings, heard a lot about from yeplers, were indeed the most delicious dumplings I’ve had in a long time. However, the noodles were a let down. I didn’t get their noodle soup because I had their special which was a miso ramen, but my boyfriend got their Chinese Pot Roast noodle soup. The broth is really rich and little. Loved that. The noodles themselves were the big«What?» They were noodles that are used in beef stroganoffs. It was very off putting for someone whose eating a lot of Chinese noodles because they are usually egg/rice based noodles, and are very light and stringy. These noodles were thick and heavy which didn’t go very well with the rest of the dish’s components. Food Verdict: Good there if you’re looking for some serious dumpling action.

First off… bubble tea! Hooray!!! If you’ve never tried it and want to dive right in, choose the taro flavor. It’s a light purple color and is sweet, creamy and delicious. Taro is a root vegetable, and has a hard to describe taste, but I’ve yet to see someone try it and not like it. I was so glad to see this on the menu, what a treat. I tried the pot roast with noodles at the recommendation of a friend, it did not disappoint! That meat was so tender it just flaked apart. I was liberal with the sriracha sauce and soy sauce to spice things up a bit, but even eaten just as it was served it was tasty. I would definitely order this again. Had a giggle when the soup my other friend ordered arrived, I think they gave him the WHOLEPOT! Ha! Generous portions here.

I’d been wanting to get to Blue Koi for several years, but it just never worked. Now I’m kicking myself for taking so long. I live and work in the KC during the week so I often eat alone, which gives me the opportunity to scout restaurants to share with friends and family. Blue Koi has just been added to my «share» list. The Blue Koi experience is first-rate from the moment you enter. Friendly greeters. .. clean and inviting dining room. .. attentive service. .. the foundation upon which great restaurants are built. My martini was well-mixed and perfectly chilled. Kudos to the bartender! The menu is extensive. I’m looking forward to many happy returns to work my way through it. For my first trip I ordered the Eggplant Pockets for starters. I’m not vegetarian, but I’m not the gluttonous carnivore that defines so much Midwest dining. I can enjoy a tasty vegetarian offering and I love eggplant. The choice was natural. .. and delicious! My inaugural entrée was Cantonese Roast Duck with noodles. The dish is presented well, tasty and filling. I can easily recommend it, although a perusal of other reviews can just as easily steer diners to other satisfying dishes. It’s apparent that the creators of Blue Koi have given necessary time to development of a great menu. Blue Koi’s menu provides that perfect marriage between the chef’s creativity and the diner’s enjoyment. After all, that’s the whole point. Finally, I need to mention that a trip to Blue Koi won’t require a stop by the bank first. I thought the price point was perfectly aligned with the quality of food and service.

When I hear people are looking for a place to eat while in Kansas City, this is always the restaurant I recommend. This is absolutely one of my favorites and I’m glad I ended up going last night. My family and I often go to the Blue Koi when we’re celebrating something, and last night was no exception. Congrats to my little brother for being named a national finalist for a cartooning award! We ended up going to the Overland Park location, which, in my opinion, just doesn’t have the same personality as the 39th Street original location. It’s set up to look quite similar — the walls are painted a faded blue and ever-changing for-sale artwork adorns them. Indie music usually plays and overall it’s a very calming environment. I ordered the vegetarian ants on a tree(which I’m pretty sure is vegan, too), a pot of jasmine pearl tea, and crispy tofu with awesome sauce. The crispy tofu, our appetizer, is one of those dishes that we get every time we go and it’s always fantastic. It’s little fried cubes of tofu served with a sweet chile sauce packed with ginger, garlic, and cilantro. The tea was delicious, as well — a gentle floral taste. The ants on a tree dish wasn’t as good tonight as it had been in previous nights. Basically it’s a large pile of stir-fried rice noodles, cabbage, tofu, and mushrooms — a simple and satisfying meal. Last night, the noodles were a little overdone, but no matter, still pretty good. Honestly, anything on this menu is great. The service here is generally pretty good. The waiters are usually the hipster type, but are always extremely personable. Our server last night was, unfortunately, inattentive and disinterested. Not the usual, but sometimes, it’s just what you get. Nothing went wrong and everything went smoothly — he just wasn’t one for small talk. Overall, this place is great and I’d highly recommend. But do yourself a favor and visit the 39th Street location. So much more character!
