This is a site of local flavor and interest. It’s considered a recreational park but if you’re going to visit it, you’ll need your scuba gear because it’s located underwater. The Copenhagen is a steel hulled schooner that was registered out of Glasgow, Scotland. The 375 by 47 foot coal transport vessel ran aground upon a reef just off just off the coast of Lauderdale by the Sea, completely underwater, having a mean depth of approximately 27 feet. Though after running aground sometime around 1900 it remained visible above water, it was later stripped of its boilers, propellers and running gear. It was eventually sunk by the U. S. Navy when, during World War II, they used it for target practice. Amazingly enough, however, is that the structure of the ship itself, other than a separated by remains fairly well intact. Today it is protected and preserved by the National Park Service, the Florida Shipwrecks, the Copenhagen Scottish Society, Florida Archivist, Florida Division of Historical Places, the Underwater Archeological Section of the Bureau of Archeological Research and others. Though no anchoring is allowed near the wreck site, there are mooring buoys nearby for the convenience of divers. As such it is open to the public for diving, exploring and recreation. It’s also a very popular dive site for local dive clubs and scuba excursion boats. The best thing about this wreck to me however isn’t the wreck itself but the fact that is that it is one of the few ship wrecks located in shallow easily accessible waters and home to an abundance of varying species of fish and crustaceans. You can view a dive of this wreck on YouTube at: As a word of caution, the GPS coordinates in several publications for this site contain a misprint, so don’t rely upon them. For the address, I have used the Marine Resources of the Town of Lauderdale by the Sea. There are people there that know all about the Copenhagen but your best bet is to make contact with any of the local scuba diving shops, and there are plenty of them, and they will not only know all about but also have various literature about it.
