NEVER rent a U-Haul for a one-way. We had one near disaster on the road where the truck would not start for 10 minutes, and then the truck would NOT start at all at our destination(requiring 4 hours of a mechanic to find and replace a part), Thank God we made it– Imagine having to unload your stuff from one broken down U-Haul POS to another on the side of the road? Ugh! We will NEVEREVEREVER use U-Haul again. NEVER. I mean it. NEVER. Yes– NEVER. Not even if we have to carry the load on our own backs. NEVER! Both of the professional movers we had(one to load and one to unload) said we should have rented PENSKE instead. They said that Penske trucks are newer and higher quality. The slightly higher cost is worth it. This U-Haul truck had over 100k miles and felt like it had 250k miles. The brake hydraulics made horrible noises when pressing at any level of force. The transmission could not decide what gear to be in on the highway and around town. The transmission was probably ready to die. The whole truck rattled horribly. The«Gentle ride» logo on the side had to be someone’s idea of a very sick joke(sure it’s a truck, but this was ridiculous). The ONLY(I mean ONLY) good thing about the truck was that it had a good air conditioner. I imagine Penske trucks have air conditioners that work too. Gas mileage was listed as 9MPG. Actual was under 6MPG for mostly highway driving. The 12 volt power socket worked. The AM/FM radio worked. Woohoo(sarcastic). Keep in mind that you are STUCK with the one truck U-Haul selects for you. This is especially true with the larger trucks that you have to reserve online in advance. On the day you NEED the truck, you pick it up. If it is a POS like the one we received, then you either take the POS(and suffer your chances on the road), or you have to argue and then try to get another truck. However, getting another truck from another U-Haul(if it is available at all!) can take anywhere from hours to DAYS, and it’s likely to be a POS too. So if you have ANY kind of schedule for you move, you are stuck with their POS or nothing. One last thing. I asked the mechanic that fixed the truck if he had a lot of U-Haul work, and if a lot of their trucks were in this bad of shape. He gave me «the smirk» that told me «yes». I’m sure he did not want to say anything explicit since he probably makes good money doing lots of on-road fixes for this horrible company. NEVER Rent U-Haul. Try PENSKE.
