The best bakery around, I grew up with Elmwood bakery and didn’t realize what a gem until I became older and realized not everyone is so blessed to have such wonderful bakery in your backyard!

This old school bakery hearkens back to CLE yesteryear… it wasn’t THAT long ago(the 80’s?!) that every neighborhood had a similar bakery fronting its main drag. Like all bakeries, the best day to visit is Saturday when the shelves and display cases are groaning under the weight if its goodies. I haven’t tried much, but I can vouch for the delicious, cream-cheese frosted cinammon rolls. If they aren’t warm when you get them, pop one into the microwave for 10 seconds and slurp a cup of hot coffee along with it.

I’ve been meaning to check this place out for quite sometime. I must say, this place is just wonderful. It’s very close to my house, so I can walk there(very Lakewood-esque, I know). I was walking the girlfriend’s dog this morning when I realized I FINALLY had the opportunity to walk in. I finished walking the dog, took her home, and came right back. The front lobby area is small, not much to do as a customer other than pick out what you want and leave. It smells phenomenal inside. I purchased a loaf of bread, four of the specialty soft pretzels, and two cookies. My total came to $ 8.50, a ridiculously low price when you think about it. I tried a bit of everything, and it was all just so good. I can’t wait to go back and get more pretzels and bread! When I asked the woman behind the counter how long they’d been there, she said it was a family owned business for 80 years now, which is pretty kick ass. If you live in the area, visit this place for bread and deserts. You won’t be disappointed.

Placeholder review. Did our wedding cake, it was absolutely amazing and they did it on short notice without extra cost! Thank you.

I’d like to visit this little bakery more as it is in a neighborhood where I often visit, and I like home bakeries, and it is similar to another local bakery(Hough’s) that disappeared years ago. Unfortunately, about the only time I can get to this bakery is on the weekends since most other days it closes at 5 pm, which seems to mean they hang out the closed sign maybe 5 – 10 minutes before the clock actually strikes 5, and i work all day. Wish it would have more worker– bee-friendly hours, as unfortunately I end up using the supermarket bakery much more.

Elmwood is the kind of business that I love. It is old-school. We went on a hot day, they had the doors propped open, everyone looked hot, but the employee that served us was extremely helpful and peasant. There’s nothing too fancy about Elmwood. They are a bakery. They make baked goods, and that is it. They do it well too. My wife, Dana P. and I purchased a small cake for our wedding topper as we would be having wedding pie at our actual event. We really had no idea what we wanted or needed, but they employee was able to help us figure out exactly what we should get. She did not try to make it too fancy or do anything more than we wanted. She made sure that we got what we were looking for: a small round cake for $ 17. Best wedding cake price ever. We also ended up picking up some pastries on the way out… dear deity figure… so good. We cracked into the cake at the wedding for the traditional smashey-face-thing, and the first taste of the cake blew me away. This was supposed to be a throw-away type of dessert. I wanted pie. This cake made me hate pie and everything it stands for. Luckily, most of our guests were to shy to come up to the cake table to get themselves some, which meant that we got to take it home! We won. If you’re in the market for some delicious baked goods, you need to check out Elmwood. It looks like a hole in the wall, but don’t be confused. It is worth your while.

We bought our wedding cake here. Since we’re serving pie as the main dessert, we wanted to go with something simple. Something small that would be good for the classic cake cutting photo op. So we walked in, told them what we were looking for, and ended up with a cake for $ 16.75. Brilliant! Of course, we couldn’t leave it at just that, and immediately bought a raspberry and an apple danish, which were consumed promptly once we got home. Delicious! However, it wasn’t until the wedding that I could truly appreciate this bakery. When John and I cut the cake and fed it to each other(ok, half smashed it in each other’s faces), the first thing I said was«Oh my god. This cake is phenomenal.» The world’s most perfect icing; creamy, not too sweet, and pairing perfectly with the confection it covered. And oh, the cake! We ordered marble cake, and it was light and fluffy and had the most incredible flavor. I don’t know what their secret is, but it’s the best cake I’ve ever had. We didn’t order a regular wedding cake because we’ve never had cake we’ve loved as much as a good fruit pie. Well, let me tell you. I didn’t even end up eating the pie at my own wedding because this cake was so amazing. This is the type of place I hope continues to thrive in Lakewood. It’s heartwarming that a local business has been around so long and become such an institution(especially judging by the other Unilocal reviews). Definitely a spot to stop in if you’re in the area!

Very quaint, and reminds me of the bakeries I used to go to in Brooklyn. Really friendly staff there. There were a lot of varieties of strudels, hot cross buns, rolls, danishes, and the like — not my cup of tea exactly, but still appreciated. I would have liked to see more cookies in there. But damn, it’s a bakery, what on earth am I complaining about?! The cupcakes looked pretty good, but I had just splurged on LaBella next door, so I thought it would be overkill. Got a danish and a cinnamon roll and the TOTAL was $ 1.40. Cheap!!! I really liked the feeling I got while walking into Elmwood(and the smells weren’t bad, either)!

When I think of Heaven, I think of Elmwood. Each and every item there is delicious. Even things I don’t normally care for, taste fantastic at Elmwood. I got my first birthday cake from Elmwood and every birthday cake since then. I have now started that tradition with my son! They still use real ingredients and real recipes. If I didn’t have to work and was independently wealthy, I would volunteer my time at Elmwood. I have never had a bad experience there. The service is always phenomenal. Even if you have to wait for a few minutes while they put the finishing touches on your order, there are free samples, and the mouth watering aromas of their other wares for sale. The old school feel of it, is reminiscent of simpler times. If I’m in Lakewood for any reason, it’s a must to stop here. If I’m not in Lakewood, it is well worth any distance to go(I once drove from North Carolina and back for a birthday cake.)

I love this place! Growing up within walking distance to 3 bakeries this was always my favorite. Hasn’t changed a bit in the 40 years I have been going there, still handwriting the receipts. Really like the apple dump cakes and no big event in my family would be complete without one of their date nut sheet cakes.

My fav bakery EVER. My mom has memories of her mother taking her here as a child and they would always give her a sugar cookie and I have the same memory. Now I have to bring my nephew in for one of those cookies! This is the only bakery I will go to for my birthday cake. It’s just one of those classic places you hope never changes… GOHERE! :o)

This place was made famous by its appearance in the movie American Splendor. Appropriately, this place looks like it hasn’t changed much over time. It’s a simple bakery storefront, not really a place where you can sit down. It basically sells sweets and cookies and things, not bread and that sort of thing. Is this place good? It’s pretty good. This place is worth checking out if only because it is very different from the typical sort of bakeries that you see nowadays.
