Ice cream only. Hotdogs are cold. Don’t taste quite cooked. Frito pie came out not as ordered.

What great little mom and pop ice cream shop ! Great people, delicious desserts, excellent coffee, and that nostalgic feel from the old soda shop days.

I was across the street for a record show and when I was done, I stopped here on my way out before making the trek back to the capitol city. I have driven by here a few times and thought that was the craziest thing I’d ever seen, I thought Borden was just a brand not a ice cream shop. So I had to stop in. I guess for the locals that know the history, it’s not as good as it once was. Sure the ice cream may not be Borden’s, you’re there for the experience of eating in a place that allows you to ponder about a different time of how things were done. If you just want ice cream, then maybe this isn’t for you. But if you want to enjoy life a little bit, then come here. Think of it as a bar that serves sugar instead of alcohol. Happiness comes in more than 31 flavors. Walking in you’re presented with a snapshot of how things once looked, the metal plated ceiling, the soda fountain bar, the booths and the coziness of the place. The people are nice and the presentation of the goods is very old fashioned. There are bell jars with sweets on the counter. The menu has all the items your parents or grand parents used to get as kids, that the kids nowadays, even me at 43 have a hard time remembering what some of the definitions were. Nonetheless i got an explanation for the difference between what uses sherbet and which uses ice cream. I went for the Orange Whip. It was awesome. I was thirsty and warm, as it was a hot, humid and rainy day, after moving boxes of vinyl, I needed something to cool me off for my long drive back. I came back and told my wife, so I think for a family outing anywhere in the vicinity of Lafayette deserves a pit-stop here even if it is a little bit out of the way. The kids and/or the spouse will appreciate a little nostalgic sweet tooth. I know I will.

Alot of people come here because they came here as kids. The ice creams wasn’t bordens brand and not really anything special.

Great place to stop in and get some Ice cream. Wish we had this chain in Texas, reminds me of a Braums or Dairy Queen, but it seems like more people were dining there. One thing I must add is, it is freezing cold inside the store, but it’s like that in a lot of the places in Lafayette. I guess that’s a smart thing when your a restaurant serving ice-cream. You can ask to sample flavors, which is a good idea since there are lots of different home-made style ice creams to choose from. Typically i’m a blue-bell type of guy but the strawberry ice cream in the dipped waffle cone was awesome.

Its old timey. Its everything you think it is and want from an old fashioned ice cream store… good for taking the kids, late night milkshakes and feelin’ retro.

Guity pleasure here — top of the line old school comfort food! Load up on ice cream, then cross the street & dance it off at Blue Moon Saloon — works every time!

Ice cream is ok. Horrible service. We waited in line for 20 minutes while 3 employees sat around in the back playing on their phones. We will stick with Baskin and Robbins.

Was craving for ice cream one night, and decided to give this place a shot. The décor is really dated, but I believe thats what they were aiming for. I wanted frito pies, but they did not have any. probably because they were almost closing. The workers here seemed like they weren’t to happy to work, or that I came in 20 minutes before closing. I forgot what flavor ice cream I had got, but it was pretty decent. We had also got the milk shake, it was also decent.

It occurred to me while at Borden’s how difficult it is to just get plain old-fashioned non-gelato non-sorbet non-fancy ice cream in New Orleans — so as a Midwestern expat, I was thrilled to come to this old-timey ice cream parlor while we were in Lafayette. I got a chocolate malt and OHMAN did it deliver. One of the best chocolate malts I’ve ever had. Plus they had some articles showing pictures of the parlor back in the day and the ladies who worked there then were totally retro gorgeous. Fun times!

I have been to the Borden store on a couple different occasions and I left unimpressed each time. There are a few neat things to look at while you’re there but the ice cream is no different than most other ice cream that I’ve ever had. It is priced as if it’s something very special though. Kind of pricey for my liking. I’d just as soon have gone down to the Sonic and gotten a cheap sundae. All in all, no major complaints but nothing to write home about either.

As the only remaining Borden’s Ice Cream joint left the ambiance of this place is at least four stars but the ice cream is definitely not anything special. I end up grabbing some dessert satisfaction in this establishment when I stay across the street at the Blue Moon Saloon & Guesthouse so the combination of these two cool places in such close proximity makes this a very awesome area! If you’re in Lafayette this is definitely a must visit spot for some vintage charm.

Fact: Almost 70% of the adult world population is lactose intolerant. Fact: 90−100% of Asian adults are lactose intolerant Fact: I am an Asian adult. (Source: ) I know the funny effects from which I suffer when consuming dairy products. I also know how good dairy products can be. This is the reason that when I do consume dairy products, I indulge. My rationale is if I am going to suffer anyway, I might as well suffer from the good stuff. With that being said, I would willingly(and even beg to) suffer for Borden’s milkshakes. My friend and I just chanced to drive by this Borden’s on our way to Olde Tyme Grocery. The cute cow caught my attention and so I simply had to ask my friend(from Baton Rouge) what Borden’s was. The moment he heard the question and confirmed with his eyes that there was indeed a Borden’s in that stretch of road, he grinned like a Cheshire cat and told me that I am a lucky girl. He refused to explain further but promised me that I am in for a treat. And what a treat it was! The milkshake that we had was easily the best milkshake I have ever had. It was creamy and thick but not thick enough that I had to wait forever to have a sip. In short, it was the perfect texture. The milk was fresh(Borden’s is Louisiana’s première dairy company from what I gather) and the ice cream really creamy and just perfect. I will go back. Next time, I will be toting my daughter along and will be ignoring all the facts I stated above.

This place is a MUSTSEE if you’re ever passing through Lafayette. I ordered a coffee malt at the recommendation of the girl working the ice cream counter. I said gimme something not boring — I have a tendency to just order a chocolate scoop of ice cream & wanted something special from a special place like this. The ice cream parlor had a stead stream of traffic, even a customer telling the owner he remembered coming in there as a child(!) I’m debating the drive back when I’ll be in Lake Charles in a week or so. I think the coffee malt just might be worth the trip!

Not only is this a shiny, happy place with delicious frozen treats, it’s also staffed by super awesome people who totally tried to track me down on Facebook and elsewhere when I left my wallet there one night. They weren’t able to find me, so held onto it until I called the next morning(after having exhausted ALL other possible places I could’ve left it). Thanks so much to Patrick for finding it and making sure it was returned to me. Other than being a safe place to store your valuables overnight, this is also the last Borden’s store in the country, and was recently renovated, so it’s bright, cheery, clean, and(now that I think of it), by far the least sticky ice cream store I’ve ever visited. Hooray for Borden’s Ice Cream Store! I’ll definitely be back the next time I’m in Lafayette. But this time when I leave I’ll try to bring all my stuff with me. I’ll let you know how it goes. P. S. I had pineapple sherbert, which is apparently not pronounced«sorbet» and is definitely delicious. Sherbert. What a great word.

I remember visiting Borden’s when I was younger and feeling slightly icked out by the place. There was always gum stuck under the tables and a thin layer of grime coating everything. I hadn’t been in years. Red Lerille recently bought the property, the last Borden’s store of its kind in the country, and gave it a much-needed face lift. When you step inside, the transformation is immediately apparent. The interior has been expanded, cleaned until it shines, and affixed with a pressed tin ceiling and assorted Borden’s kitsch that had probably been stuffed in a drawer until a few months ago. Bonus: they installed a drive-thru, so you can get your shakes, sundaes and malts to go.
