Gross. Contrary to what the other reviews said it is not like every other Chinese place. I got Szechuan beef, white rice, hot tea and crab rangoons. The beef was slimy and springy… squishy and gross. Lots of vegetables even though I said I only wanted a little. Sauce wasn’t hot ATALL even though it’s supposed to be, it tasted like the sauce for beef and broccoli. Rice was good but it’s rice. Crab rangoons were gross, the consistency was sort of like mayonnaise, though they were hot. The wontons that came as a starter were decent but very oily. The tea was good. I took two bites, had three cups of tea while waiting for the check and left. It’s all still sitting on the table because I wouldn’t know what to do with it if I took it. Throw it at someone? I didn’t try the sushi. Our waitress was nice. It was clean in the dining room. Our check for one meal was $ 15. I’ll never come back. Chinese food is good without much fanfare but this place takes it into the gutter.

In La Plata for the night and needed dinner. Wanted something healthy and not greasy. Found Hunan Star on here and decided to give them a try. This was probably the best sushi I’ve had yet, but I live in a landlocked, desert state, so truly fresh fish is hard to come by. I had the Alaska Roll, Redskin Roll, white fish sushi, and omelet sushi. All very tasty and very fresh. I was kind of surprised by the smaller size of the rolls compared to what I see back home.

I really enjoyed this place! The dinner buffet started at 4:15. It was your typical Chinese take out food but in buffet version. They also had chicken wings and some desserts. Everything tasted really fresh. I loved the Wonton soup the most. Service was great, and we realized how much it was when we got the bill. Just $ 11.95 and sodas were only $ 1.50. I will definitely be returning!

I haven’t eaten at the buffet, but the sushi bar and takeout are great! My husband and I sit at the sushi bar when we eat in, and we love the selection and also the timeliness of service. Have also gotten take out from here on numerous occasions and haven’t been disappointed. The appetizers are good and the food is tasty. I usually get the general tsp’s chicken, and am always impressed with the quality of the chicken used and the freshness of the sauce and veggies.

The 411: this is a typical«Chinese» restaurant with an affordable lunch buffet and fast takeout. It’s also got a new sushi bar that is generous in the fish cuts. I’ve lived in la plata for 20 years now. Of all the time I’ve spent on earth, this is the Chinese restaurant frequent most. Of my 20 years, this place has never gotten a take out order wrong. The place is clean inside, which is sometimes more than you can ask for in these types of restaurants. The managers are nice, and the sushi bar is clean and new. Not a bad atmosphere. Most places like this usually get 2 stars from me, but I’m biased. The managers like me and I like them. If you’re starving during lunch time, give their buffet a try. It’s always fresh and it’s bottomless. Bottom line: it’s the same as every Chinese place, but it’s clean and their sushi bar is great for the price and the amount they give you. If you’re a whiny bitch that complains about authenticity, lemme be the first to say shut the hell up and get your money’s worth here. You’ll get a good meal.

I’m an avid sushi eater and this Chinese restaurant in La Plata surprisingly has some of the best sushi for its price. It’s unexpected because of its low-key appeal and the fact it’s a Chinese restaurant, not a Japanese restaurant, but those are some buttery-soft pieces of salmon sashimi, yum. The dragon roll is flavorful and BIG, they don’t skimp on the avocado ;) The rest of the food choices are typical of a Chinese restaurant and always a go-to when you’re craving that umami taste. What makes Hunan Star III that much better is that it’s not overly salty. Such a relief from other restaurants that equate salt with flavor: P Another plus is their fully stocked bar. Very hip and opens up the space with a more party/small event feel. La Plata has a gem on Crain Hwy and it’s this restaurant!

The wait staff is nice but the sushi guy is set in his ways and won’t work with u. He tries to give u pre made sushi because he’s lazy and doesn’t want to make it fresh. This was the last time I will go there.

I’ve eaten Chinese ranging all over the US. Whereas Hunan Star III is not my absolute favorite, it is a very close second. I am a bit of a regular here, especially at either the lunch or dinner buffet. I’ve had a regular dinner on occasion, and found it wonderful. I typically go out of my way of decent food. Fortunately, this place is on my way home! This place is great for take-out as well. Alas I cannot speak to the sushi, not one of my go to foods. However, I can speak to the overall atmosphere of the place. I’ve always found the owner and staff warm and inviting. Some of the servers recognize me and I find that a very good sign. They often ask how I am. I cannot find any reason to complain. It is a great place for a vegetarian.

Not very impressed, the restaurant is clean and had high hopes, but service is strange. Slow and food came out at all different times. Got my soup a very strange egg drop soup after the others in our group had finished theirs. The wonton chips were very stale, asked for a fresh bowl they were stale as well. My rice was brought with soup and waited 15 min for my lemon chicken so the rice was cold. Said something to waiter who did not seem to understand. The spring rolls were so different than any I had ever had, no cabbage and made with a beef paste — was not good at all. I have no plans to return.

I think my previous review was pretty harsh considering the service is always good. I have been ordering different dishes the past few times and been completely satisfied.

The service was incredible. The waiter we had was very polite and was there when we needed him. The Sushi was prepared perfect and tasted great. I can’t wait to return. The godzilla roll is huge and tasty. The dynamite was my favorite… try on

I’ve only ever had take out from here, but every time the food gets worse. The general tso’s chicken lacks flavor and is inconsistent. The crab Rangoon and dumplings are not very good and they do not provide any dipping sauces for these items as most other places do. I have heard good things from others, but I have had several bad experiences. I would like to try eating there as the restaurant is very nice inside.

I’ve been a customer for many years for both dining in and carryout. I still consider it to be the best Chinese restaurant in the area. The buffet on Wednesday and Friday nights could use a little more variety, but dollar for dollar and bite for bite it’s still the best. If the buffet is not your style, order off the menu — the portions are huge and taste great. If you want Michelin 5 star dining, head uptown and pay the premium, but Hunan Star 3 suits me just fine. Don’t just take my word for it — go there pretty much any evening and see the crowds. We can’t all be wrong. We’ve recently begun ordering their sushi, which has been great. Nice portions, good flavor and texture. Not too shabby for a Chinese restaurant. The staff is very friendly. They always welcome my wife and I when we arrive and bid us good night when we leave. Jay is our favorite waiter and he takes great care of us. No need to ask for a drink refill(non-alcoholic). Our glasses are always full. Ask for Jay to wait your table next time you are in. I have recommended this restaurant to many folks and I usually see them there at some point. So if you like Chinese food, do yourself a favor and stop in.

Recently renovated with sushi added to the menu(which I was too nervous to try being a Chinese restaurant), I came here with my family for Sunday dinner. First I’ll review the food: –Seaweed Salad — pretty standard and pleasing –Steamed Dumplings — not a fan, the dumpling was too thick and doughy –Large Egg Drop Soup — they aren’t kidding about large, it was served in something about the look and size of a dog bowl On to what made this a 2 star, the service: Our booth was set up for 3 and the waiter literally plopped down a platmat wrapped around the silverware in front of my father without saying a word or smoothing it out and walked away. When we ordered our Barefoot wine, he came back with Kendall Jackson claiming to be out of Barefoot. As he was opening it, I noticed the price difference and my father went to ask if it would be a no charge upgrade. It was not — so we asked for an alternative. About 10 minutes later I see him come back with our originally ordered Barefoot but the waiter then spent another 5 busing up another table before coming to take our order. I don’t know if he had a personally really hard day or what, but this is NO way to treat a customer — sneakily trying to upgrade then avoiding the table. I’ll tell you what I’ll be avoiding, this restaurant.
