After some co-workers died totally unexpectedly we were talking at my office about estate planning and to our surprise maybe 20% of my companions had a valid will written… and ZERO had a «Family Trust» established. My boss summed it up: «Oh, that costs thousands of $$, I don’t have it right now». So as I’m mid-50s I admitted my now defunct invincibility and sought out a good reference to a competent & Honest law firm to get my humble assets protected. Larry McGill was recommended by our family accountants(Robert Sharp & Associates, La Mesa)…and am I ever happy, satisfied and resting easy to have this legal document done and ready for any unexpected tragedy. Specifically, Mr. McGill quoted me a very reasonable FLAT fee to review my asset base and establish the appropriate legal trust pertinent to California /USA law. As added features, he also includes a financial power of attorney, Medical Declaration if I’m incapacitated, final instructions I wish(e.g., burial /cremation, Type of service, etc – etc.). In summary, this is NOT pleasant stuff, but when all is done and waiting for my heirs you see how NOT doing this is the biggest DIS-service you could do to your survivors. They are going to be wracked with grief already — and in no mind to sort out these complicated legal matters, go through Probate court, etc. Finally, some key added value that Mr. McGill offers over several big-time competitors in the area: (a) He does NOT bill you for basic, simple phone or email consults after you’re a client(i.e., other firms bill fractions of their hourly rate if you talk 20 minutes on the phone); (b) Most important, I think, his Trust legal language is «open» to include new laws, assets, etc. that your trust may be impacted on in future years. This is pretty important as other firms write you into paying them annual«Trust Revision /Update fees going forward. In closing, this was the best money I ever spent considering both the ROI to avoid Probate and making my heirs life easier after passing… DON’T DELAY on this.
