I’ve trained with a lot of different people in many different styles. Martial arts is one of the cornerstones of human evolution; the ability to use yourself to defend against the forces of evil. Chinese Martial Arts Institute is a beacon of light in La Mesa. It’s not just another studio, it’s a family, and not like Cobra Kai, but more like The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. You don’t wear a shell, and you don’t fight an Asian dude with a shiny metal helmet and razor sharp gauntlets, but you do train with the best and practice Northern Green Dragon Shaolin Kung Fu. So when people ask if you’re kung fu is good, you can say, «hell yea.» Training here is always a blast, and quite a workout. Before CMAI, I never really worked with weapons. Well, I did used bo staffs, because I got serious bo staff skills, but I never practiced with swords. You get swords here. That’s how hard core they are about showing you the power of ass kickery. Sifu Dwight Love is one of the most awesome practitioners of the art, and an accomplished instructor. He’s an older black man with a face that says he don’t take crap from no one, but he’s very kind and always patient with his students. Just think of Samuel L Jackson and replace his guns with Chuck Norris’ ass kicking fists of fury and round house kicks of death – that’s Sifu Dwight. Going to CMAI, I’ve learned 2 things: How to kick ass and how to take names. It’s a great studio and they have lessons for all ages.
