I love White Sands. This is my dream retirement home and I have been in most of the ones in San Diego County. I have met many if not most of the residents. The people who live there are interesting, kind, smart and fun. There is not a more beautiful place in the world. The food is great and most of the people who work there, have been there for a long time. There is a sense that the employees and residents look out for each other. I love the atmosphere, as well as the welcoming family feeling. The residents are always doing fun trips that I hear about and then take my family to do because it sounds so fun. Honestly, if I could move in there today — I would. This place is NOT where you say, «How sad — Grandma is in a Nursing home!», this is a place where you say — «Grandma, can I come and stay with you? Can I move in???» So be careful, you may end up with unwanted houseguests!

I have been a very happy and satisfied resident of White Sands for 8 years now. I love the ambiance and living right on the shores of the ocean. The staff are fabulous – always there to take care of your every need. There are so many activities, one can not partake of them all. The residents are wonderful – each has an interest history. They are like an extended family. I searched for the right place to spend my remaining years. One of the advantages of this community is that it is a continuing care facility – has all levels of care. I choose to move in at the age of 68 and am so delighted that I did so. I can’t say enough great things about this retirement community.

I work in healthcare and have business with White Sands on a few occasions. Honestly I can not think of a better community in San Diego that you could live in! The views are absolutely breath taking, the facility is top notch, but the one aspect that people often over look is the care and staff and here it is second to none! Consider yourself lucky if you are able to be part of this community… take a tour and you’ll understand what I’m talking about when the residents one after the next come up to you telling you how special their home is. I typically work with David in the marketing department when helping residents moving into this community and I can not say enough wonderful things about him. If you are considering moving in here, make sure that you ask for him! He will do everything in his power to help you or your loved one. Once again, thank you guys for everything you do. A++++++++ community!

Before you read further, be aware that this review applies ONLY to the Atrium Memory Care unit at White Sands La Jolla and NOT for the Independent or Assisted Living facility. Overall, this is a decent choice if the personality and circumstances coalesce. The Atrium staff is great, working under circumstances that I believe are harder than anywhere else in the facility(except maybe skilled nursing). The Atrium handles only Alzheimers and memory-impaired patients. It is a locked-down area but the residents are free to wander the area. The typical ratio is two staff persons per ten residents. The staff is friendly and efficient… and overworked. These are patients whose needs range from minimal to frequent checks and assistance. The staff do an excellent job for the time they have. The one real drawback is that there are only 10 resident rooms and the area is relatively small. This throws the residents together. The idea is that by having them together will promote interactions and social engagement. The problem is when one or more of the residents take an active dislike to each other. The area is too small to allow then to go their separate ways. If a small, close facility is what you are looking for, this place isn’t too bad. Otherwise, keep looking.

Be careful what you wish for. This retirement home is situated on the water and has lovely ocean views from some of the units. I rented my unit for a year to decide if I wanted to live here permanently. The answer was clear: Hell No! The staff is disinterested in the residents well being, but claim they care. Worse, the administrative staff is dishonest, constantly looking for ways to add bogus surcharges on monthly statements. Steer clear.
