Forts rocks and creeks The Fort McClary Picnic Area is a pleasant place just down the street from old Fort McClary. It has a sign and small parking area and then lots of picnic tables, pavilions and even a decent public bathroom. There is also a small playground for the kids and trails that lead down to Barter’s Creek. There is more hiking along the creek a bit further down the road. The entire area is covered by huge and mature pine trees that smell great in the warm weather and soften the ground with pine needles and cones. It does get crowded and the parking lot filled up in the summer but in the off season you can have it all to yourself. A lovely little spot for a little picnic and rest after exploring Fort McClary.
