Spirits of Tahoe is a little slice of OLDSCHOOL heaven. It harkens back to the tiny corner stores of childhood, owned by a family that always gave you a piece of penny candy, and would let you buy cigarettes for your mom with a note! It may not have a BEVMO selection, and hey it may be a dollar cheaper at Safeway, however I am big on supporting mom and pop stores, and I love that this one survives in this corporete day and age. The name is promising — a new age circus troupe perhaps? — but no, it’s a very average liquor store on Tahoe’s north shore, with high prices and limited selection. There are also some groceries and other random items, most notably lots of Mexican food ingredients. I cannot tell you how many times over the years this store has rescued the mood at my ski cabin when everyone’s drunk started to wear off.
