U-Pack Moving

We used U-​Pack to move from Raleigh to Seattle — the price was good — $ 2400ish for a pod that perfectly fit everything we needed to move. They gave us a window when they would deliver it and to our place in Raleigh and they were right on time. It got to Seattle quick — they picked it up on Friday and it was in Seattle the following Thursday. It was packed really full and nothing was damaged, including the TV and a few relatively fragile paintings. We got exactly what we expected and have no complaints about the moving side of things.
My only complaint is the drop off in Seattle — they mentioned that permits may be needed, but what wasn’t immediately apparent was that permits to park on the street in Seattle are $ 350; adding like 15% to the total cost of the move! Plus, they can’t put the pod in a covered area (regardless of clearance), so my only real option if I didn’t want to pay that much for the permit was to have them deliver the pod to their facility in Kent, WA — about 40 minutes away from where we live. And they initially only gave us 2 days to unpack and move the entire thing. I was able to get them up to 5 days, but it still added some logistical headaches to the entire thing.
Overall though, for a cross country move it was a pretty positive experience.

When they delivered the truck all was well and it was there when they said it would be. The price was right since we moved from San Diego to Washington state and we did not want to drive a uhaul but all of the full service movers were very expensive. The truck has plenty of space and very tall plus you only pay for what you use which is great for those of us who aren’t sure how much room we need. The problems started after we arrived in Washington. Their estimated delivery time was 3 – 5 business days and has now been 12 days. (Which means no beds no towels no pots or pans and limited clothes. majorly annoying) They are finally going to deliver today but will not deliver in the morning and will only give me within a 4 hour window and will not leave the trailer with out someone to sign for it. Between jobs and kids this is nearly impossible and completely irritating. If they had just been more honest on the delivery time I would have given them a better review but based on the information they gave us we didn’t prepare to live with out everything for two weeks like we would have had we known.

Awful experience. They were the cheapest option and you get what you pay for. If you don’t mind a ridiculous amount of churn, extra charges, unnecessary coordination without help the day of your move, and rude unhelpful customer service, then it may be fine for you.

We used U-​Pack recently to move from Los Angeles to Seattle, and had a really good experience. Their «terminal-​to-​terminal» option was about $ 500 cheaper than any other option we found (through PODS, U-​Haul, or full-​service movers). Plus then we didn’t have to try and find space to keep a POD near either of our apartment buildings, we just rented a U-​Haul for a couple hours to transfer everything over (and really if I had more friends with trucks I wouldn’t have even needed that).
A lot of the experience will depend on how much stuff you have and how YOU load it. My boyfriend’s dad knows exactly how to tie down a load, what blankets and pads to buy and how to use them, so we only had a little damage to the base of an old desk. Nothing serious, and considering how far everything was shipped I’m not surprised.
The other thing to keep in mind is the delivery date. We didn’t pay extra to have a guaranteed date, so we had a range of «it could arrive any time over this week». The people at the ABF service center in Kent were great, though — especially Mary who answered my calls every time. She let us extend our pickup time by a day so that I could come down on my day off and not have to worry about missing work.
Moving is stressful, but U-​Pack was surprisingly one of the least stressful parts of the whole experience!

I hired u-​pack for a move from Federal Way to Chicago. They are unresponsive. The cubes arrived ok and if you pack them it might be ok. I hired their moving company to load and unload as I am a senior. They quote you one price and then upcharge you before loading and unloading. My upcharges were 700 to 800. I bought the insurance hoping that they would be more careful. Things were damaged and they are careful to take pictures of this but they do not care. I have moved myself across the country 3 times and never had the rip-​off that these assholes pulled. I*f you are forced to use this company hire your own movers to load and unload and pay by the hour. It was the most unprofessional service I have had in my life and I felt ripped-​off as they hold you ransom to get the upcharges. I have another move and the last people I would use is this firm.

U-​Pack was great from start to finish! They were more affordable than any other option for a 3,000 mile cross-​country move from northern Virginia to western Washington. I did a quote online and then got a phone call from their central call center to get everything reserved. The customer service rep who worked with me was very detailed and clear on the terms, including that delivery was not guaranteed and could be anywhere from seven to nine business days, or longer if inclement weather was a factor.
Our trailer got to the Kent terminal two days earlier than estimated, and the dispatcher was pleasant on the phone. The man they sent out to drop off the trailer was very personable and friendly.
I will absolutely recommend U-​Pack to anyone looking to do a long distance move. Our 27′ trailer was completely full and only cost approximately $ 5,400 total, compared to the $ 1/​lb. that United Van Lines quoted me — and we had 12,300 lbs in our trailer!
U-​Pack uses ABF’s freight terminals and trucks, so it’s not handled the same way as traditional moving companies or storage moving companies like U-​Haul and PODS. Don’t expect the same kind of model — if you leave your shipping containers or trailer at the terminal for any amount of time, keep in mind it’s a freight terminal, not a climate-​controlled consumer storage facility. If you use ABF’s U-​Pack service with the right expectations, you will not be disappointed.

I used UPack for a cross country move. They were very affordable. Move went without a hitch. Staff were very friendly and were very accommodating when I needed to change days. Would definitely use them again!

I recently hired U-​Pack for a move from Denver to Seattle. My experience with them has been awful. After a lot of waiting and dissatisfaction, I can safely say I will not be using them again or recommending their services to anyone I know.
When my cube was picked up in Denver I was told I could expect a delivery on Monday the 6^th. This didn’t happen. I found out when I arrived in Seattle that I shouldn’t have been given this estimation and my cube was still in a nearby neighboring city and wouldn’t be delivered until Wednesday the 8^th. This was incredibly frustrating and inconvenient, but customer service compensated me for the mistake and I made arrangements to stay somewhere and wait for a delayed moving day.
Today, Wednesday the 8^th, I called the warehouse in my area and was told «Oh, looks like the cube is still in Portland. It’ll definitely be delivered by tomorrow though.» I was shocked, but I tried to stay polite and understanding. When I started to question if there was anything that could possibly be done to have my items delivered earlier, Phil in Mt Vernon cut me off and said «I can’t pull a rabbit out of a hat. It’s on a truck, it’ll be here by tomorrow.»
Excuse me? YOU can’t pull a rabbit out of a hat? Well then neither can I, Phil! I won’t just cheerfully book a hotel room, order some take out, and let it go. I’ve been sitting in Seattle since *Sunday night* while U-​Pack is holding all my belongings hostage in Portland. I’m not going to accept your casual answer of «Well, wait yet another day I guess» without questioning it. Moving across the country is not a super flexible process. I’m not in a position to just chuckle and happily wait another day for the contents of my entire house to be delivered, as if this is a totally normal circumstance.
I’m not an unreasonable person. I don’t expect miracles to happen. But I do expect courtesy and empathy when I speak with a company whose entire business is to move people from Point A to Point B in an allotted time frame. I expect to be offered apologies when that doesn’t happen, at the very least, and not a terse and rude reaction to my justified frustration and questions. Do you have a bed to sleep in tonight, Phil? Because I don’t. Ta-​da! There’s your hat trick.
So I called customer service, and after some back and forth, my cube was put on an earlier truck, although it still probably won’t be delivered today. I was offered some money back and some sincere apologies. (Thank you to Matt for at least trying to problem solve with me, instead of acting like I had an attitude problem for daring to question the almighty shipping schedule.)
As it turns out, there was no good reason for the delay. My cube was simply overlooked and not loaded and shipped when it was supposed to be. I understand that mistakes happen, and I appreciate that U-​Pack did eventually try to make it right, but the bottom line is that a small refund doesn’t change my experience. It doesn’t get my stuff delivered on time, it doesn’t un-​spend the thousands of dollars I gave you instead of a different company, and it doesn’t leave me happy that I chose this one.

0 Stars. If you value your stuff, don’t use ABF Upack. I had to add some things to my pod in Oakland CA. They brought out the pod to THEIR parking lot. Had me sign for it, telling me that I’d taken possession of the pod. Added my items locked it up. It was a Friday evening. I didn’t realize that their people were around. I got a call the following tuesday telling me that there was no lock on my pod. Indeed, someone had cut the lock and stolen 2 expensive recumbent bikes, a dresser and more. When I filed a claim, ABF said tough luck, I’d signed out for the pod but didn’t sign it back in. Even though it was on their property.
I could have saved myself $ 1,200-$ 1,700 by putting my stuff by the side of the road by their facility with a note that said «please don’t steal my stuff» The protection would’ve been the same.
I have a storage unit in San Francisco that I need to empty and move the contents up to Seattle. You can bet that I will use someone other than ABF Upack.

We used U-​Pack for a move from Seattle to Chicago. Originally planned to drive w /​a UHaul but the move got delayed to January so I started to look for alternatives.
From the first phone call with U-​Pack I felt I had found a solution.
The customer service people were VERY helpful on the phone and everything they said would happen, DID happen. It was easy & affordable. The Cube even arrived in Chicago 2 days earlier than expected. Great experience with U-​Pack!

We were moving from Suffolk to the Seattle area and I was looking to reduce our moving costs since relo wasn’t part of the new job. Full service movers came in about 11k. Doing a rental truck and driving it ourselves was another option but Upack ended up being about $ 1k more and then we weren’t driving a heavy truck across the country, so worth the money. We went over our estimated space and ended up at $ 5100 for a cross country move.
You rent the truck space… no weight limits. It’s a super tall truck and they have online estimates for the space you will need. Had I sold that darn treadmill I would have been almost on my estimated length. No big deal in the grand scheme of things. The phone call to the national number was excellent every time. I only waited once over many calls to speak to someone. You reserve a date and can change it anytime or multiple times. If you cancel there is a fee if too close to the move date.
So we were in a condo community but the driver arrived on time and parked it so it wasn’t an issue. The ramp is 12 feet long and super grippy. You have to pack high to the top to avoid damage AND you need a ton of furniture pads and tie down rope. It’s not their fault furniture rubs and gets damaged. Invest a little money in the packing materials. Don’t get cheap boxes… they cave in. Get good quality moving boxes. We got a lot for free at Uhaul store nearby that are left after other moves and I bought boxes for what else I needed. Our damage was minimal b/​c we put some money into our moving supplies.
Once loaded I called for pickup and they were able to squeeze me in the same day. The driver was courteous and helpful. I couldn’t get the bulkhead door bottom bar to fit and he brought wood to put across for support. The diver on the other end removed that before drop off so we didn’t have to deal with it. He also set up the ramp for me and moved the truck twice to make sure we had clearance walking off toward the house.
We have moved a lot in the 15 years. If I could have afforded the full service move I would have. The damage we did incur was due to running out of furniture pads and being at the end of the space… figuring out how to deal with the last minute weird awkward stuff. Only other damage was stupid packing I didn’t oversee when it was loaded. Friends are helpful but in this case I should have been watching the upper levels myself. I wouldn’t have packed some things the way they did. So be diligent. Keep heavy stuff to the bottom, boxes in the back, and then furniture.
Upack is a great alternative for long distance moving and is a fair price. We used a trailer that was dropped off at our place and driven to our new destination and my review is for that service. We had an excellent experience on both ends and I highly recommend this process if you can not afford the full service companies.

The trucks huge and there is no weight limit. Take advantage if the High ceilings they are higher than any self moving company. think pack vertically. Trick is to load all boxes first as high to the ceiling as you can and then strap it all in. Put furniture in last.
They also offer long term storage of your cargo freight container which came out to be cheaper than a self storage unit.
I moved from central CA to seattle and had my container in storage until I found a house and closed escrow.
It ended up being cheaper than any self moving company like Uhaul or Budget. So thankful this company offers a reliable service for a reasonable price. If it wasn’t for ABF we wouldn’t have been able to afford to move so far. :)

My girlfriend & I just moved from Massachusetts to Seattle through U-​Pack and we were told that it would take 6 – 8 business days for our cube to arrive in Seattle. After a 12-​day road trip across the country, we called for our cube to be dropped off at our new apartment. We were told that the company literally had NO idea where our cube was. This was Friday, and OF COURSE, they’re not open on weekends. We called them on Monday and they still didn’t know where it was. We called them on Tuesday and they still didn’t know where it was. Finally, later that day, a woman from the company called us and told us the cube had been sitting in Dayton, OH since the first day of its shipment.
(Just to make things worse, we drove to Dayton the first day of our road trip.)
We were told that the cube wouldn’t arrive until the next Monday, 21 days after it had been originally picked up, a full 14 business days from when it was supposed to arrive.
Not only did we not have furniture in our new apartment for 2 weeks (including our bed – at least our floors are comfortable to sleep on), we didn’t have anything to cook with, so we were forced to buy things out of pocket which we had already packed in the cube, and the woman told us that we would not be compensated for those out of pocket expenses. Nor would we be compensated for the extra storage we purchased because we thought the cube would beat us by a whole week, which it clearly did not, and we clearly had no use for.
We also lost our moving help because we had friends in the area the day we planned to move in on. We were told that they would not be offerring us complementary moving help.
They offered us less than 25% of what we paid for the move, which was well over $ 2000, not even enough to cover HALF of a month’s rent.
All in all, I have felt 0% satisfaction from this company even though they boast a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee.
If you DO plan on moving with this company, I sincerely hope you choose U-​Pack Guaranteed which we were told would have given us a full refund, however, we weren’t even offered this feature to begin with. Great salesmanship.
Final words: U-​Pack WILL screw you over if you are looking for any kind of refund so when you make the call, assume the position.

My relo-​cube was broken into in their parking lot. 2 expensive bicycles and more were stolen. Tough luck for me. They won’t cover the cost of my stolen items. I would have gotten the same level of service had I put my things on the side of the road with a note that said please don’t steal my stuff. If your things get stolen, you may very well not get any compensation.

I flew out to Seattle to DC this week to move into my new place but despite being assured by the coporate office they could deliver they won’t deliver my pods to me as scheduled tomorrow (the day before Thanksgiving) and said the next day would be Monday (even though I fly back to DC on Friday). So I am forced to hire a truck and move out of the cubes at their facility and then again on the other end. NOT HAPPY.
I was also told to call two different companies (the storage unit vs the shipping company) and they told me conflicting information. yes they could drop it off tomorrow and no they can’t. Yes I can hire people at the storage unit to unload but only before 10am and after 5 pm and I asked them twice are you sure? The other number said they were wrong and in the end — no moving men!
In the long run it also really cost any less to use them. To ship from Seattle to DC would have been 2400 and to use a full service moving company coming back is only 2500. Plus in Seattle you have to also pay for movers and street permits ($ 260) on top of the pods. It has been and continues to be a frustrating expensive experience.
I will never try to move on my own again nor would I recommend this company

Everything was perfect. Moved from CA Bay Area to Seattle and everything went very well. All of my dealings with customer service and the guys picking up and dropping off the crates was excellent and easy going.
One thing to keep in mind is this is a freight company, not a moving company, so for those complaining about broken items… you suck at packing. We had 3 relo-​cubes full of stuff and everything made it without a single thing broken. It also arrived very quickly… our stuff was picked up on Thursday evening and made it to Seattle on Monday. I am sure if I had called ABF on Monday I could have got my crates delivered the same day.
My only complaint was the cost of hiring a 2-​man crew to help with unloading. U-​pack wanted $ 400+ for 2 people for 2 hours. I was able to find the help I needed from the u-​haul website for $ 130 for 2 people for 2 hours. The guys were great and powered through my stuff! For reference it was Evergreen Moving out of Tacoma… excellent movers.
I would definitely use ABF again for a move… it was just a great experience from start to finish.

Normally, I wouldn’t even review a business like this because when it comes to moving or shipping, I sort of assume that the service will be nominal with no surprises be it good or bad. However, my experience we these guys was unbelievably good. We were moving from San Francisco to Seattle and wanted to get a U-​Pack container to transfer our belongings from our 2-​bedroom apartment. They were out of containers and only had a huge 28′ trailer available so we ended up with that instead. We had scheduled weeks in advance, but at last minute, we realized we probably should move up our move date if at all possible. We called up our contact Shelby and he was able to get us our trailer earlier with no problems.
When the driver arrived, we were worried he wouldn’t have room to place the trailer, but nevertheless, he was able to parallel park it into a super tight spot. We expressed concern about leaving the trailer there overnight as the area only had 4-​hour parking, so the driver suggested that we call the city and let them know as they will often be lenient about such things. However, it ended up being moot because he went ahead and called into the station and was able to schedule a same-​day pickup of the trailer!
When we got to Seattle, we had movers pick up our stuff directly from the loading dock (for which they gave us a $ 429 discount for not having to drop the stuff off at our new home). When you get to the loading dock, you see all of the trailers and semi-​trucks moving around and you sort of see how they’re a pretty big operation. However, the whole time they were all really friendly and helpful, even though I’m undoubtedly the smallest possible potato in terms of their customer.
I know every place has negative reviews but in my experience, these guys are the best possible combination of professional, helpful, and friendly. I’d go with them a million times over.

ABF is amazing. They delivered my cube on time and even put it up on the curb so I had an easier time getting my stuff into the cube. Then they showed up quickly once I called to let them know I was done loading. When they dropped it off they were also amazing. What a wonderful team of people helping people move in a way that is affordable! I also had them store my stuff… all good and safe. Two thumbs UP!

If I could give ZERO stars I would. Moving is stressful enough. This company made it 100 times more stressful than I anticipated. Also total ripoff of charging me $ 3500+ MORE than the original quote without ever coming up with an amiable solution. You can’t really do anything since they are holding your stuff hostage basically but all I can do is use social media to hopefully warn others to STAY AWAY. Oh and when you do have an issue there isn’t one person that you can deal with for your whole move. The person that you start with is NOT the person that you deal with during the actual move. They are nice when they want to GET your business. Once they have it — just nasty and totally unhelpful. I am beyond disappointed.
