I first saw this beach from a zodiac boat on the way to the Na Pali Coast two years ago. After seeing the wide open, white sand beach with the 12 quaint rental houses on it; I was determined to come here someday to enjoy the wild west side of Kauai. Luckily, that day was very recently. I stopped at this beach after a long day of hiking at Waimea Canyon for some sun and some eats. I was very happy when I drove up to see that there were only two people on the entire stretch of beach. I love the feeling of enjoying a beach without the annoyances of other people. Even with the wet weather on other parts of the island, the sun was in the sky for the entire afternoon I was here. I would imagine that is how this side of the island usually is due to the southwest coast phenomenon of dryness. The waves were great, and the beach had areas to swim in between patches of reef. There was also a bathroom, picnic area, and showers. Everything that a beach goer could want or need was available without having to share with others. Overall, this beach was gorgeous. It was the perfect beach to just get away from it all. I would love to stay here for a week in the cottages to get the full feeling of being in the middle of nowhere.

If you want to «get away from it all,» this is your beach! I’d been trying to find an empty beach during my stay on Kauai but to no avail(because I had a small rental car and couldn’t drive to some of the places that others have mentioned). On the Sunday I was there, only two other families were present in the afternoon, and by sunset I had the whole beach to myself. I wish I’d known about this place and the nearby cottages before my trip. I would have stayed here.(Just so you know, there are no lifeguards and the waves can be rough.)

Barking Sands beach is no longer accessible. Majors Bay is the alternative beach on base. Stop by the NEX and load up on goodies, then head here for a mostly empty beach. We came in March and the waves were too big for swimming(also quite windy), but it was still magical because you have the whole place to yourself. Also, check out the Barking Sands cottages — they are literally ON the beach. Amazing!

Beautiful large amount of white sand beach, with Niihau and Waimea view. When we stayed at PMRF cottage, we took advantage of the beach for 2 days, as it is in front of where we stayed. The beach was almost private for some time. Walking the beach was nice too. According to Jerry & Janine Sprout Kaui Guide book: Another name for Waiokapua Bay, is the middle segment of the long beach — the longest in Hawaii — that runs from the foot of the Napali coast at Polihale State Park around to Kekaha. Parking: Access is at the Pacific Missile military security, which is past Kekaha on Hwy. 50, at mm30. Due to heightened military security, permits are required to visit the beach. Call 808−335−7936. Two page application and background check takes two weeks to process and costs $ 20 per person. Unilocal365 — 206⁄365
