Years ago, I had a steak and cheese at a restaurant in New Hampshire that served the sandwich with chunks of steak instead of shaved steak like most places use. I have been looking for a place like that ever since and I am so glad to have found it! The steak and cheese with BBQ sauce was fantastic! I will certainly be back again! Edit: sad… I think they closed.

What’s good here: The Philly Cheese Steak is super, everything you want a philly to be. Fries — These seasoned fries rock! Smoked Chicken Wings — Tender Smokey goodness. On my list to try: BBQ ribs What could be improved: Friendliness — I’m a neighborhood person and I feel like if they were just a little bit friendly I might be compelled to dine here more often. I’m not saying they are unfriendly, because they aren’t. Just don’t expect any small talk or friendly chit chat from whomever is at the counter while you wait for your order.

I just can’t endorse this place enough. YOU need to eat here. Just to try something new I got smoked chicken wings. Wow. Falling apart. Rendered. Smoky. Drooling. ;) And just like everything else here… they season the them well. Fries? Seasoned and delicious, too. Look… if you are anywhere in the Brookside area and want to play your«I cater to local businesses» mantra out in real life, put your money where your mouth is and come about 7 blocks east to this place for some smoked meat.

KC is already known to be a BBQ haven, with so many staples in town you have to wonder what’s a small guy going to do to stand out? GreedyMan’s puts a slight Bourbon twist on their BBQ, and their house sauce is a pretty damn good one to throw in the mix available in this cowtown. Almost everything from fries to Potato Salad has a few dashes of cajun seasoning on it, and the menu covers a wide range of chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, etc, and even a turkey sandwich, which I actually tried for lunch. Also, another bonus, amazingly refreshing home made pink lemonade and«KC Peach Tea», I highly recommend either for your beverage of choice; There is no beer to go with your BBQ; but hey they serve everyone as if it were take out, and there is a liquor store 15 paces away at 56th and Troost… basically you’re all set! The BBQ Turkey sandwich was good, the Potato Salad wasn’t trying to be anything too fancy, so it was, well I call it «safe»(hey, I ate every last bite, I’ll give them that), and the fries and wings are great too. I’m ready to come back and try more of this menu! I’m throwing a 5 on this rating because if you know your BBQ in KC you need to do yourself a favor and give this one a go, so you can really claim to know your BBQ!

This is a new place, and frankly I’m always suspicious of new BBQ places. I’ve been ‘burnt’ too many times. Haha. Anyhow, it’s not funny when you get some bad ribs. But I have to say, this is the real deal. I walked by them by chance, and saw that a new place opened – and they served food! A rarity on Troost ave, mostly known for auto shops, burger kings, KFC, and check cashing stores. But this stretch, south of Rockhurst, has some ecclectic joints, among them a quaint bookstore, an African fashion shop, a hat store(yes, just hats), and even a place to drop a few grand on a crotch rocket. Nevertheless, the BBQ place stood out. I then read about them in the KC star( ), and then mentioned that the owner had worked for a while out of a mobile cart and was quite successful. So I plopped down my $ 7 for a turkey sandwich with beans, and tried them out. Wow. I have to say, upon presentation it didn’t look like much. The décor of the place is original yet unremarkable(old John Lee Hooker 45 on the wall, a signed photos of some minor leage cheerleading squad in KC, various other stuff). A total of 7 chairs among three tables, I believe. At any rate the bathroom was very clean. I soon found out that this was what a BBQ castle looks like. I got a cup of extra BBQ sauce for dipping, and as I began to gnaw on my sandwich(with white bread a la Arthur Bryant’s), dip into my beans, and even much of the few pickles they gave me, I got that weird protein-laden feeling akin to the post-thanksgiving-tryptophan-sedation. Maybe I hadn’t had a big meal in a while? But I’d like to believe it was the turkey and beans, which, not looking like much, sure seemed to have that special TLC ingredient that is sometimes missing from some other BBQ places. Overall, a turkey may have died for my sandwich, but in the big picture, my meal was satisfying and enjoyable, and I can only imagine that if the bird died a karmic death, my meal helped the bird-ness return to other birds, and the cycle of life continues. All because of BBQ. Amen. Update: They seem to have a specialty for turkey: turkey burgers, anyone? Also, they don’t have ribs here, so go for the turkey. Also, they have no alcoholic beverages. I’ll try to upload a menu, soon.
