The backbone of most neighborhoods in Metro Kansas City is the little mom and pop grocery up the street. I have encountered many, but few have been quite like Al-Rahman Halal. If you haven’t guessed by the name, it is a Muslim owned business. That said, they carry much more than just Muslim goods. This store is located in the very diverse Northeast neighborhood of Pendleton Heights. The area features a lot of Muslims, but also Italians, Asian, Mexican, etc. Al-Rahman is the only store in the neighborhood that caters to more than just one of those cultures. It is a simple bric storefront, but when you get inside and really start to look around there close and packed shelves, you find some very interesting things. Higher end pastas and sauces, REAL Coca Cola(made from cane sugar AKA Mexican Coke), Isreali olive oils and products, higher end Italian olive oil, and of course a plethora of mideastern and muslim products. The store also has lamb and beef cut to order. Two things to keep in mind though it is Muslim owned so I am pretty sure pork will not be a standard carry and the lamb is usually cut into sort of a cubed nature as it is usually used in stews and the like. I have never asked them to do chops, so not sure if they can, but they do get the whole leg of lamb usually too. They do carry some, but limited fresh produce(onions, jalapenos, and tomatoes). They get a delivery of fresh pita from Jerusalem Café every other day as well. The store also functions as a mercantile carrying some housewares, clothing, and whatnot. The store is family owned and they are all very nice and very active in the community and often times are a wealth of info about the area and what is going on. If you live in the area it is worth a stop in.
