GREAT food! Really authentic Bengali taste. I recommend the various chicken curry stuffs. It’s also wonderfully cheap, and wonderfully crowded and happening. A warning though: it’s a very no frills restaurant. They will not waste any time with and presentation or other niceties. That is, they will slop the food onto styrofoam plates and serve you with plastic utensils and disposable glasses. They’ll also literally microwave the food right in front of you as their way of preparing it. Also the service, while totally functional, is perhaps rude and makes no effort to have manners. But just think of this as adding to the authentic experience! If none of that is a problem for you, this restaurant is GREAT!

Tried mughlai paratha several times its good and consistent. I heard of their killer bihari kababobs. So I recently tried it, turned out to be a hoax. i have eaten better bihari kababobs from worst rests in jksn hghts. 2 stars.

Food consistency may not be always solid but when you feel like having Bangla food, no other restaurants in the neighborhood will make you satisfy. Been to Sagar many times, 90% of the time walked out happy. Let’s talk about food: I have to start with their Hajir Biriani because they are the best. However not as good as it was couple of years ago. Muglai Parata is another one you have to try. They only make it from 4 or 5pm to 7pm. Rashmi Kabab and Tanduri chicken kabab’s are best if you can get them right away when they are made. Because they keep them in room temperature reheating destroy the out of the oven taste. Morning Breakfast will remind you dhaka. Scramble eggs are like from dhaka university. Aloo bhaji, Chana dal, halua are great wether you choose with roti or Parata. I would recommend having roti to get the most flavor out of everything. Morog Polau is another dish they were good at. Haven’t had in a while so I wouldn’t know how good they are now. Samosa, spring rolls are great. My wife usually buy them uncooked. Their Singaras are so so. Don’t know why they don’t make kolijar Singara. You will find authentic taste on everything else they make and better than other restaurants in the neighborhood.

Good Indian food. I’ve found it much yummier than Taj Mahal restaurant which is in the same neighborhood. I always feel compelled to stop in for a samosa whenever I walk by because they’re that good!

Ok service. Good food. Could be better. No music. I was wondering if we are having religious party out here. If I compare with other Asian Indian food restaurant it should win the award but still a lot to improve.

A friend of mine came to visit recently and we decided to order in and looked online. It said they they delivered but unfortunately they don’t. Luckily they aren’t far from where I live. We looked at the menu online and saw some items on the menu that looked good. When I called they didn’t have most of what I or my friend wanted. They said they don’t cook to order. Apparently they cook items for the day and whatever is left that’s it. I was a little upset but it was what it was. We were hungry so we ordered anyway. I ordered the chicken tikka masala, with the basmati rice. My friend had the goat biryani. We shared a butter naan, chicken samosas and vegetable rolls. The guy who took my order over the phone thought I wanted an extra rice but I guess didn’t hear me clearly. So we ended up with a whole container of white rice. No flavor. Wasn’t a fan. The tikka seemed burnt before they put it in the sauce so there were a lot of black pieces in there. I guess they cook the chicken then add the sauce later? Not a good look. The naan was super thick and not as buttery as expected. I tasted the goat biryani my friend had. Not a fan. The best things were the samosas and the veggie rolls. If I’m ever super hungry I might go there again. Otherwise I’d go to another spot.

The naan, bihari kebabs and chicken tikka masala are all great! But that’s all the place has going for it.

Love their food! I wish my town had one of these joints. Went with my uncle. We devoured the lollipop chicken before we even started. Multiple orders of them actually. Over all, beef with chilli was my favorite but the rest of the fair tasted very well also.

Sagar is definetly one of the better and cleaner Bengali restaurants I have been to in NYC. Their food is pretty delicious. I have to give a 4 star not a 5 because I feel they can improve on certain items on their menu like the parathas that turn rock solid in 5 minutes. Mango lassi is just mango juice and crushed ice and their burhani is horrible. Their service is pretty good especially their Catering service. I would suggest them to anyone who is interested in Bengali food or needs Catering asap.

Casual spot with some very tasty food. Since I don’t really know Bangladeshi food, my friend(who is Bangladeshi) ordered a whole bunch of stuff and it was all really good. The vegetable dishes were actually my favorite — two different orders had distinct spices(one more a mustard-based spice). If eating in, they’ll bring the food to your table, but this is not a fancy joint at all — you line up and order off a menu behind the counter. People were friendly.

The food here is really great! The only downside is that it’s usually really packed and the wait is sometimes really long. Their lollipop chicken is a must try!

It’s been a tradition every time I got to New York to pick up family members at JFK airport, that I drop by sagar on my way back and pick up a select key dishes. Up until 2013, this was done atleast 2 – 3 times a year, for many many years. If I used Unilocal during those times, I would probably have given a 5 for those visits to be honest. I loved the food that much. Well since then, I’ve moved out of the east coast and haven’t been back… until now. I found myself in nyc last week and per tradition, I decided to drop by here to satisfy cravings that I’ve held in for many years. We ordered multiple items and it pains me to say, most dishes were subpar. I understand if a dish was not up to par on any particular day, but when all the dishes are mediocre, that shows they have lowered standards and quality control. The bihari kabab(bangladeshi style) was pretty much inedible due to the amount of salt used. They also burnt the sides beyond what is acceptable meaning 10% of it was hard like rock. The chicken roast had 4 big pieces but 2 of the pieces were still undercooked on one side. The kaachi biryani used a strain of rice I have not seen used to make this dish before but more importantly, it had 3 pieces of meat and all of them were just chorbi(fat) with no actual meat. The oils and natural fat from the meat should be absorbed by the rice giving it enough moisture to not need any gravy but the biryani was so dry we had to use the chicken roast gravy to offset the dryness. The morog polao was decent and shami kabab was spot on. It’s not acceptable to have so many dishes be so subpar. It looks like this place has become so popular among the locals that either they don’t care or not able to keep up with the demand/quality. Either way, after all these years, I think I’ve outgrown this particular tradition of eating at Sagar. If there ever is a next time, I’m going to try some of the other bengali restaurants nearby.

After reading all the reviews about the chicken biriyani I decided to go and see for myself what all the commotion was about. The first thing you’ll notice is that service here is slow and negligent. The person behind the counter asked me if I was going to stay. I said yes and he told me to take a seat and someone would bring my order over. 10 – 15 minutes go by and none of the people staring into space behind the counter even looked in my direction. I went back to the cash register and repeated my order. This time the guy went downstairs and brought up one of those metal round takeout containers, stuffed it in the microwave and proceeded to heat up my food. Really? A microwave? It was then that I noticed the filth on the ground with trash overflowing from bins. Even the food in the display case was not lit up and looked questionable. Yes, the Dept. of Health grade for this place would undoubtedly be an F. Since the the guy had already brought my order to the table I prayed for a safe, clean meal that doesn’t end with any kind of unhappy surprise in the bathroom. The chicken biriyani turned out to be pretty good, though not as exceptional as other reviewers make it out to be. The addition of cloves is what makes it different from more conventional biriyani dishes. The the taste reminds me of Sri Lankan lamprais, which also uses cloves and cardamom pods. (Disclaimer: I am Chinese and love all kinds of South and Southeast Asian foods so I may be biased.) I wasn’t impressed by anything here except for the mango lassi, which is served like a Starbucks frappuccino with whip cream on top! Otherwise, given the dirty space behind the counter and my overall average meal, doubt if I’ll be back.

I came tonight with friends. We got table outside as the weather was beautiful. We ordered Thai soup, two plates of lollipop chicken and mango lassi. That got us very full. It was delicious. The lollipop chicken and soup are very popular at Sagar.

The food was ok. People are very unfriendly. And do expect whole bunch of people staring at you while you eat. Not a normal restaurant. If you like Bengali chai then skip it from here. They are usually popular for their catering services.

Great food! Many locals eat here on a regular basis. Restaurant has a very casual ambience, and is neat and clean. They have a wide variety of choices of Bangladeshi food. Everything looked sooooo good. To order food you will have to go to the counter. I am a fan of this place. Chicken Biriyani is the best…

1. Price = Pricey 2. Customer Service = Blind but nice 3. Food = Delicious 4. Cleanliness = Bathroom is dirty 5. Décor = Not all that A meal for two would come out anywhere from $ 20 to $ 35. Lines are long but the customer service helps out the ones that speaks out their order first and not the one who is in first in line. Have to admit, food is abundantly delicious. After using the restroom, don’t feel like ordering food. Freaking animals go in that restroom. My dog is cleaner than that restroom. Finally, the place has wooden tables and chairs without tablecloths; an easy clean.

I love Sagar’s chicken biryani. It is honestly the best biryani I have ever had. One plate costs $ 6 and it can be split among 2 people. If I want something quick to eat, I go for the naan and kabab which is about $ 3. I also like their goat curry. This is a good place for catering purposes as well. My family has ordered for large events such as birthdays, milads, and anniversary parties. They are reliable and affordable. This is not really a fancy dine-in type place. The customers there are usually just hanging out with friends and eating a casual lunch/dinner or sipping on some tea. You wouldn’t come here to host an event. If you want a quick desi meal, definitely check out Sagar.

The only reason I am giving this a 1 star is because of the pleasant staff. Outside of that I would NOT even place it. I have been getting tired of going outside my immediate neighborhood of queens village for great culinary experiences(Astoria, Long Island, Long Island city, Manhattan). Imagine my excitement when Unilocalers highly rated Sagar restaurant. Went there today and was most DISAPPOINTED! 99% of the food is microwaved or reheated! The vegetable samosa was nice and hot as if that was the only thing just made. The food that was sitting there appeared most unappetizing with the absence of steam from anywhere. The Naan was doughy like pizza dough. Thinking that so many people could not be wrong, I thought, let me give their sister restaurant Sagar chinese a chance — another BIG mistake in 1 evening! let’s just say I will definitely NEVER be back!

Authentic Bengali food. Had roti(bread) and daal(vegetables), dim baaji(omelette) and hawlua(sweets). Everything was perfect. Prices are fair. You get water for free. Service is good. Family friendly place also.

Since I’m South Asian, I’m quite picky when it comes to eating traditional Indian/Bengali Food at restaurants. Sagar definitely marks on of the better Bangladeshi restaurants here in NY. My family specially loves their sweets from here which are usually made fresh everyday. If you’re looking to buy bengali sweets then this place is definitely worth the drive. The food here is also pretty good and spot on!

Got a whole lot of food for $ 57 — 4 Chicken biryani($ 7 each), 1 chicken roast $ 7, 1 chicken tikka masala $ 7, 2 paratha($ 1 each), 6 shami kabab($ 0.50 each), 6 meat samosa($ 1 each), 4 veggie samosa($ 1 each). I got everything cold and heated it up at home. credit card accepted. :) Chicken biryani is very mild in heat — I was expecting a much more intense heat but was a bit disappointed. big portion though and a drumstick and a thigh! chicken roast was yummy! not the rotisserie that I was thinking but the sauce is very distinct and a nice kick. chicken tikka masala is yogurt based and spicy also. this was my family’s favorite dish. Out of all the fried stuff we got, i liked the meat samosa the best. nice heat and crunchy exterior. more like phyllo dough. The vegetable samosa was decent but I’ve had better. the meat/chick pea patty was not bad. They didn’t have naans when I was there(~11am Sat) and it took me about 30min to get my food. They were short-handed and constantly had interruptions(phone calls, going into kitchen, delivering food to customers).
