Drove out here only to find the chicken is dark meat only. Hostess wasnt the nicest. Mac n cheese-They ran out of this Pecan cake-was the only thing that they had that I wanted. It was pretty standard Music was pretty loud n ghetto fab. It was like being in the club.

The staff was super nice and the food was ok. I had much better. It seems like it was missing flavour. I got the fried chicken. So when I got my chicken they had put it in a styrofoam takeout box and it was fresh out the oil so, when they put it in my box with the hot oil it burnt my box. At least put wax paper first. Didn’t like that.

You’ll regret it. The owner and manager are so arrogant, which is ridiculous because the food is whack. At least be arrogant when you can be proud. There is nothing to be proud about concerning this«restaurant» The«chefs» are just dudes from the corner. The place is not even up-scale.

The food is only ok but the service is slow and not professional. The 1st time I went I was the only one in the restaurant and I ordered fish & grits. My meal was decent and the service was fine since I was the only one. So I decided to go on a Sunday. Most of the tables were full but they had 2 free ones(the place is very small and probably only has 10 tables) and 2 servers. I was seated at an empty table and left for about 15 minutes before I was approached again and this is after I said excuse me several times and was just looked at. Meanwhile, I watched the 2 young ladies just talk at the front register and one cleaned off a couple tables that had left, but couldn’t take the time to answer my question or even bring me water. When someone finally got over to me I tried to order the fish & grits again but was informed brunch had ended. I was so annoyed. Had one of the young ladies properly greeted me, served me water or just anything I could’ve established that 20 minutes earlier and then would’ve chosen to go elsewhere. At that point I was so annoyed and hungry, I just had to get up and leave and go home and make myself lunch. This place is a 5 minute walk from my house so I had high hopes it would be my new favorite place to grab breakfast or dinner. Too bad that didn’t work out and I will never be back.

For the long wait my potato salad could have been churned and not have tasted like a whole potato with mayo. The fried whiting had no meat to it. More like fish scales with batter. It was Good Friday and I was disappointed. The corn bread needs work!!! Taste like Jiffy mix with water. Add some eggs and flour so it doesn’t crumble like Pompeii. Soul food should be made from the soul! I could’ve gone to the fish fry market on Jamaica Ave and 165th St for what its worth.

First time i had the chicken and waffles. I had never had it anywhere before but had a craving. I was lead to plate of soul. I enjoyed it enough to come out of my way to get my favorite dish turkey wings. I had it with greens and mac n cheese.

I live in Queens NY and I saw the show on Restaurant Stakeout so I had to give it a shot. My hubby and I went last night for his birthday and lets just say looks like its back to the same old mess. When I walked in I saw we were the only ones in there figured, because it was Monday. The owner was sitting down talking so loud with some friends I couldn’t barely hear my spouse. But didnt let that get to me. When the food did arrive like 25 minutes later the waitress dropped all 3 pieces of chicken in my lap. Lets just say it was extremely hott and now I had to wait another 20 minutes for my food while my hubby was eating. She apologized and offered me a 15% discount. The food was not good, the chicken tasted old and burnt and the candy yams was horrible. The mac and cheese was very oily. Everything seemed like it was out of a microwave. The waitress was nice but mostly sitting down playing on her cell phone. Its sad i was hoping for a lovely evening with some good food for my hubby’s birthday. I guess we wont be going back. Thanks.

I had a taste for some macaroni and cheese, so I decided to give this place a try. I pass by it everyday and had been curious about it for a while. The mac and cheese was great! It tasted *better* than some homemade versions I’ve had lately. It had just the right consistency(not too watery or gobbed down with cheese) and flavor. I wish I’d gotten a double order! The candied yams I got were ok; nothing to rave about though. The sides($ 3 each) were a good size – big enough to sit and savor; they weren’t gone in three forkfuls, like some other spots I’ve been to.

Place is back open and better than ever. Chicken and waffles are amazing and the caesar salad is great as well. Did I forget to mention how delicious the red velvet and carrot cake by CakeMan Moe is? Check out the dessert menu, you won’t be sorry.

Excellent food. Very Tasty. Portions are the perfect size for one. Highly recommend the fried chicken, mac and cheese, whiting fish, oxtails and the greens. Not your typical greasy soul food restaurant. My only complaint is the service which is a little slow but hopefully they will improve on that because the quality of food is very good. Oh, the red velvet and butter pecan cake is to die for! Seriously good but not overly sweet.

This place makes you feel like you’re at someone’s home. It’s has a warm feel to it, which I can appreciate if you’d like to stay in. We came in around 8pm, and several items on the menu, they didn’t have. I don’t know if they were closing soon… But we settled on the things they did have. The food is really good, my friends and I had the fish sandwich, fried chicken, jerk chicken, several sides. Mac n cheese, potato salad, cabbage, candid yams. Everything was pretty good. Pricing was appropriate for everything we ordered. And timing wasn’t bad at all. Around 15−20minutes for everything. My favorite thing was the potato salad, MacNcheese and the fried chicken! Yummy!

I hate to do this b/c as a new business in the area, I was more than happy to patronize and give my business. With that said… I wasn’t impressed with a few things. Let me lay everything out-as I believe if the owner works on a few things, this will be a fine eatery… The Good: The Décor is VERY nice. I would say this restaurant would be great for a date night if you want to stay local. I’m not sure if they serve alcoholic beverages but if they did, it would be a nice place for food, drinks and socializing… The fish I ordered was… ok. it wasn’t bad. In fact I woke up craving it this morning. However, it was salty and I’m not sure if I’m craving the fish or the salt from the fish… I think I’m craving the salt. The fish was good tho. I’m not here to totally discredit the owners hard work at all. The fish is good… very crunchy and unique batter. The price point– My fish was two dollars(he has a special).and it was well worth it. In fact, it should probably much more than that, truth be told. He could charge $ 3.50 to $ 4 on it and I would probably buy again IF the bad points where corrected. Now to the bad: I don’t want to have to walk damn near in the kitchen to place my order. IDC if someone has to run to the store, you always need to have someone in the front of the house. and if you can’t, just move the register closer to the back or have a half door. When I walked in, I didn’t know who was there to take orders. I almost walked out. You had two ‘customers’ sitting in a booth and a man sitting in a corner waiting for his food order. The man in the corner pointed me towards the door. When I walked in, the 2 ‘customers’ stopped and looked at me, but he told me where to go… I have to make that point b/c 10 minutes later, homegirl that was sitting in the booth came to take me order… Yeah… She doesn’t know how bad that looked professionally. Then she asked me TWICE! At this point, it’s just me there waiting. She couldn’t get the order right the first time? AND all that was pointless b/c I gave the owner my order first. Time-it took so long to get my food that I questioned if he was killing the fish first… lol. no seriously… Order was wrong-I ordered a fish sandwich but check this… I didn’t get bread! I had to ask the young lady in the front for tartar sauce. Errrr… Why? The young lady in the front, who eventually came back from the store seemed nice enuff. What I could not understand as the owner is… why you would hand her my food with the tray open as soon as she walked in, not allowing her time to wash her hands. So now she had to close my food up but she’s shouldn’t be touching money AND food with unclean hands.(she just walked in from the supermarket). I feel bad writing this b/c I DO want his business to do well. And I think it could. What I think restaurant owners need to understand is, black ppl eat soul food(take out or eat in) to experience something different b/c I’m black American-everything I ordered, I could make myself. I ordered to try something new and quick. I think the things I mentioned need to be fine tuned but if they are, this restaurant will be around for years. I feel sooo bad about writing such a scathing review online that I’ll probably remove it eventually… I just want the owner to know we want a good soul food eatery in Jamaica Queens. I love the fact that it’s black owned and I want to patronize but I need a little better service…

Being a long time resident of Queens and being Jamaican and American. I’ve been anticipating a restaurant other than west indian food in my neighborhood. And A Plate of Soul delivered(almost). First of all the décor, Is Off the Hook. After looking at every other eyesore on the block it’s really nice to see eye candy and this place delivers on the romantic atmosphere it creates with the mellow colors of the restaurant, the lighting and the mahogany wood décor. Okay, I know I need to get to the food. I was salivating when I reviewed the menu and noticed, catfish, whiting(although I’m a vegetarian even the bbq chicken sounded like a delight), then mac and cheese and sweet potato pie. Oh My. And these main courses were under $ 10. Okay, I ordered the whiting and received 3 large pieces of fish and they were delicious. Bummers that they did not have mac and cheese or sweet potato pie at the time that I visited but I will be making a return trip.

A Plate Of Soul is a delicious, comfy restaurant. It is a perfect place to hang with your girlfriends and enjoy some delicious food or you can also enjoy the ambiance with your significant other. I attended an event there on Saturday, June 9th, 2012 held by a friend of mine… I got to say i usually am critical of southern cuisine that wasn’t made by my mama or grand mama but the food was awesome !! I had a sample platter of fried fish, fried chicken, BBQ chicken, baked mac n cheese, collard greens and baked bread roll with a hint of garlic in it… Everything bite i took was scrumptious !!! I especially enjoyed the fish and collard greens !!! The place is cozy, comfy and the atmosphere was great! The smells from the kitchen were sooo good and the place was clean! Table settings were clean !!! I don’t know how anyone else feels about clean utensils and table settings but that tells me alot about a restaurant… I will be going back soon with my girlfriends again soon! I’m a Brooklyn girl but i will be in Queens for A PLATEOFSOUL !!!
