When Pigs Fly

I love the German Sourdough bread! I would give this place 5 stars if I didn’t feel judged by the staff for only coming in on Wednesdays for the $ 2 bread deal: «oh… that’s all… ok… [sigh]». It’s really all I buy. I’ve tried the cookies before and would recommend them if you’re weak and can’t pass up on the sweets. Having bought When Pigs Fly breads at the supermarket before (for an arm and a leg), I like that you can cut out the middle man and get fresher bread for a lower price. The bread isn’t made on premises, but is brought in from their bakery in Maine daily. They also accept LevelUp! «Yay! I’m a fan.»

Terrific breads. My favorite sandwich bread is the Baby Spinach, Onion & Garlic Ciabatta, followed by the Potato, Roasted Garlic & Onion. The Hummus bread is also great. If you’re into sweet (and untraditional), I enjoy the Chocolate bread. I’ve also heard that people really enjoy the Orange, Toasted Walnut and Cranberry.
I wouldn’t recommend their cookies; stick to the breads when ordering.

Try the seasonal Blueberry Raspberry Lemonade bread — its sweet, tangy and delicious!
Also recommend the low carb wheat — very good and filling.
Skip the soft white sourdough and the country sourdough — neither are very sour or flavorful.

The best bread place. I often buy it to treat my guests. Simply cut the bread into small pieces, goes well with anything or without.

I could spend hours in here just smelling the bread. I love the ciabatta and anything with garlic. Sometimes they have hot pretzels which are way too good.

While visiting my fiancé after I moved back to CT and he was still up in JP finishing university, we used to take long walks of discovery around the area and on one of my last trips there before he moved he took me into When Pigs Fly. I’d had their regular bread after he brought it home in the past, but this time we tried some more items like muffins and such and everything we had was both delicious and gone within 48 hours (because we ate it all and ate it fast). Only wish there was a place like this closer to our house when we lived on the hill years earlier. Then again, my hips are probably more appreciative it wasn’t there. Oh evil but delicious carbs… you are done to perfection at When Pigs Fly.

My fiancé and I were absolutely blown away by both the bread and the service at this bakery! We walked in just looking for a loaf of sourdough for dinner that night and walked out with three irresistible loaves (said sourdough, lemon-​rosemary sourdough, and almond-​blueberry-​maple syrup-​that-​makes-​my-​mouth-​water-​just-​thinking-​about-​it). We also went home with bellies full of delicious samples that will be purchased at a later date. Oh! And a cookie! Buy three loaves and you get a cookie!
We can’t give this place a high enough rating — excellent food, excellent service — what more could you want?

Very Disappointed with all of the people out there who can not eat Gluten, they do not make Gluten Free bread. BIG BUMMER, many small chains or independent shops do!

For all of you complaining about «blowing your diet» and «the horror of the carbs» — I’ve got news for you:
GET THE LOW-​CARB BREAD.
Never have I ever tasted bread with 6grams of net carbs — and 6 grams of protein and only 70 calories — that is so dense, moist, seed/​oat-​filled… and just SO DELICIOUS! Seriously, I’ve been around the low-​carb block and it can be a deceptively ugly experience. You have mirages of moist bread that actually taste like cardboard; masks of hearty slices that crumble in your mouth like stale blocks of wood. I went out on a whim and ordered a sliced loaf of the low-​carb bread, only to revel in its deliciously complex and satisfying taste and texture. Per the suggestion of the friendly person behind the counter, I froze it after a few days and the bread didn’t lose its flavor.
The store itself is really cute and filled with samples and some nice foodie accoutrements. I got some blueberry syrup for a friend — they have lots of dips to choose from. Come here for a splurge, a sample, a gift, or if you’re like me, a practical and sustainable loaf of bread!

WPF is a nice convenient spot to get interesting and fresh bread. I go weekly and it is a quick, easy and fun experience. The prices are reasonable, $ 3 – 5 for most of the loaves. They carry a good selection: best of list includes Six Grain & Pumpkin Seed, Ciabatta, Sourdough… There are also assorted bread toppings such as infused olive oils and jams that always look interesting but I have not sampled yet.

This bakery was great. They have the most delicious flavored breads, including chocolate bread and the festive special «jingle bread» with cranberries, almonds and more. The cookies are the best i’ve ever had. We got the chocolate heath cookie which was like a brownie with choc chips and english toffee. We went in a couple of weeks back, and the man working there was great: friendly, well-​informed on the products and more than happy to help us and let us try the breads and cookies. Amazing.

I love this place! Every time I visit, the staff are super friendly and are supportive of my sampling habit. Sometimes, I get to take some samples with me. There is quite a diverse selection of breads, which are all delicious. I tend to buy two loaves — one savory and one sweet to satisfy my dual cravings. And I don’t have to whip out my wallet to pay — they take level up.

A loaf of their delicious bread only costs about $ 5.50! Not much more than a loaf of Pepperidge Farm, but so special and yummy! I can enjoy this bread even without butter.

Quentin is a delight! Hugely helpful and very generous. Bread is pretty good too.

I love the bread here and every time I’ve been in the shop they’ve been more than friendly. I usually sample 4 – 5 different breads and then buy one.

I didn’t enjoy the service. The man at the counter came off really rude when I was snapping a picture. I’m a food blogger, sir. This is free advertisement for your store. The bread is a little hard. I like my bread really soft. Not impressed.

I can’t say anything more other than the breads (and the chocolate chunk cookies) are especially tasty. The owner & worker there also are available for baking discussion. My current favorite is the rosemary & garlic, but I learned that it is not a good bread with vegetable soup. It’s not When Pigs Fly’s fault. Mmm and it smells so good inside.

I love this bakery! They have an amazing selection of bread both sweet and savory.
They also have great cookies and olive oil. The mango bread is my favorite.
The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and they always offer free samples.

What a heavenly place to stumble upon in JP!
A simple unpretentious storefront lined with its perfected artisan bread, infused oils, and fantastic balsamic vinegar. With a generous and friendly staff, you can’t ask for much else … (except maybe a small section for cheese and cured meats and pâté? hm? mm…)

JP’s a pretty small place, and I like to think I keep fairly good tabs on additions to the neighborhood. How did When Pigs Fly escape my eagle eye? Blame it on books — I take the 39 home from work, and generally have my nose buried in a novel when we pass by WPF’s section of the street.
No matter. Last evening I swung by the newest location of seven New England-​based bakeries after a reception at UForge Gallery, and was absolutely bowled over by the hospitality. While I perused shelves of infused olive oil and french toast toppings, Jennifer, manning the counter, told me about WPF’s other locations, their ingredients, their most popular loaves and their commitment to no preservatives. Then I died and went to carb heaven.
Have you ever had access to basically unlimited bread samples? No? Get the hell over to WPF, because after trying the chocolate bread (thick, semi-​sweet, perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream), best-​seller orange cranberry with toasted walnut (tasted exactly like fall), and spinach with roasted onions and garlic ciabatta (so savory and delicious) and turning down further offerings (no more space in my stomach), I was given a massive bag of slices to take home.
I left the store with a stupefied smile, an enormous loaf of onion-​mushroom ciabatta, lemon-​blueberry cake, and enough bread samples to defeat the appetites of my three roommates, all for $ 9.
