Not sure why this place gets so many 4 – 5 stars. It was meh. I’m a firm believer that if the meat HAS to have sauce, then it’s not seasoned well enough. The chicken was average, sauce was decent, pulled pork was kinda bland and needed more time in the smoker, and the place was definitely way overpriced for the quality of the food.

Ordered the pulled pork sandwich special platter and the food was good but the portioning was not very large for the price it seemed to me. Nice dining area and selection of different grade sauces to use though.

called for a to go order. was put on hold for twenty minutes. the person going to pick up the order got there and had to tell them to pick up the phone for the order. told them i had been on hold for twenty minutes and got a very bland, sorry we were busy. i explained i had been listening to them take other orders, her reply was yes they take the walk ins first. i asked if phone ins were not important and she told me they take as they top it off, not that i expected it, no discount was offered. very sorry a business owner, this is not acceptable service. will not go back… spread the word

I am not a picky eater whatsoever, but this place should just be called ‘The Pits’. The food had no smoke flavor to it whatsoever, much less a ‘Hickory” flavor. Maybe Andrew ‘Old Hickory” Jackson had a farm nearby. This is not only bad tasting BBQ, but the portions are small as well. Good iced tea, but that’s about it. Next time I will not just look at the overall rating because there are a lot of 5 and 1 stars and not much inbetween… I suspect the 5 star ratings are family, friends, or employees.

We ordered chicken tenders for my 6 year old — and as I cut one open to let it cool, I discovered that the chicken was raw inside! If I hasn’t cut it up, my daughter would have bitten into a raw chicken tender! I took it back up to the counter, and no one apologized. In fact, the only response I got to showing them the raw chicken was, «Hmmm.» Then the lady turned around without a word and gave the chicken to the cook to re-do. I saw the other lady who had been helping us, so when she came over, I told her that my daughter’s chicken tenders had been sent back because they were raw inside. Her response was, «OK???» I am not making this up. The entire time, they acted like I was being weird for not wanting my daughter to eat raw chicken. Have they never heard of salmonella? But wait, it gets worse. Since I had used my plastic fork and knife to cut up raw chicken, and my daughter’s fork and knife were on the plate I turned in, I needed a new fork and knife to eat my food, which was sitting ready on our table. The two ladies running the place both argued with me about giving me a new set of plasticware because I had the tainted set still on the table. They said, «But you have a set right there.» I explained quietly and calmly that I could no longer use that plasticware as it had touched raw chicken. Finally, one of the ladies got me a new set while I was trying to explain for the second time that I could no longer use mine because it had cut up raw chicken. She walked off while I was explaining, and semi-yelled in a very exasperated tone, «OK! I’ll get you some!» When she returned, I ate my now less-than-warm meal because I had already paid for it. They did later apologize for the raw chicken and pay for it, but I will never return because I do not like being yelled at when needing a new plastic fork due to their serving up a plate of raw chicken to a child.

Stopped in here for dinner on my way to Oxford with some friends looking for some good BBQ. Have to say, this place did not disappoint. The wet pork ribs are the way to go along with some tater logs! And if you’re craving something sweet you gotta do a piece of their homemade carrot cake! Soooo gooood! Lastly, the women running this joint were the best, sweetest ladies to deal with. We talked football for about an hour and then hit the road. If you want some authentic backyard BBQ with a friendly atmosphere this is your place!

Very disappointed in last night’s to go order. If we had been dining in I would have had to ask for money back. As it was, it was pitched into garbage. Ribs were nothing but fat and tasted as if they had been boiled. Love their pulled pork but they need to work on those ribs. $ 23 tossed into garbage can!

If you’ve eaten bar b que outside of Mississippi… say like Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas… you probably won’t like this spot at all. literally no smoke or charcoal flavor, rather dry, and requires a ton of sauce to feel palatable. The fries were huge… I was ready to throw down, took one bite and felt like I ate a sample of everything else they may have fried in the grease the day before. I can only assume that the positive reviews I read about this place was from people that wouldn’t leave Jackson to save their lives. This is survival food at best.

The BBQ pulled pork plate was delicious. The cashier was very friendly and was pleased to tell me about the menu. I went here with my girlfriend because of Unilocal reviews and were not disappointed. In a nice section of town. A guest eating started chatting with me and said the Hershey pie is the best thing he has ever had. He said he had been eating there for 25 years and it’s the best BBQ in Jackson. The hot BBQ sauce was different and my favorite of the three options. If I’m ever in Jackson again, I will get the BBQ nachos.

Stopped here on my way to New Orleans as it was conveniently located right off 55. Based on reviews I ordered the ham and cheese sandwich platter with a side salad with comeback sauce and tater salad. The ham was moist and flavorful and properly messy as the sandwich fell apart while I was eating it. I love comeback sauce so that was great for a Midwesterner like myself. The tater salad was more like mashed potatoes but tasted like potato salad, I thought the flavor was a little off. My bf got the pulled pork sandwich platter with baked beans and home fries. The beans were delicious, they had big chunks of ham and a zing to them. The home fries were boring, but the reason for the lower rating was that the pulled pork was extremely underwhelming, which was disappointing for a place claiming to be «voted the best BBQ in ms.» It was dry and lacked flavor. The available sauces(mild, spicy & sweet) were lackluster, but sweet was the best to add some moisture to the pork. The other people who came in and out(and through the drive thru) all seemed to be regulars though so maybe I missed the secret menu. All in all ok, convenient for a traveller, but may not be the best option around.

It’s alright. The ribs were very tender, but it’s the sauces that killed it for me. The baked beans were not a pretty sight, but they tasted pretty good.

For me BBQ is in a food group all its own… you know, like ice cream is also its own food group. That being said, «the Pit» is the mother’s milk of BBQ, the standard to which others must compare. Maybe I am biased… it is the BBQ joint I grew up with, but for great Q, terrific service(Ginger and Raul are one of a kind) and DELICIOUS desserts, Hickory Pit is the spot! It is worth a try… and the Brunswick stew, BBQ nachos and Ham andCheese sandwich also rock!

I’ve had Hickory Pit cater to a couple of my companies/agencies before and I’ve tried them on more than one ocassion on my own free will and accord. With saying all that, they just do not hit me in the wow category. I feel BBQ should be comforting, down home type cuisine and not commercial and Hickory Pit just has this commercial flavor to it. Their portions speak to that commercial, bottom line — one scoop here, a few slices on the scale there. The Hickory Pit is in a nice neighborhood and they have Fox news playing for the southern conservative and it just doesn’t speak to me. If you want commercial BBQ — then the Hickory Pit is just for you!

Ok people when I say good eats, you say«Hickory Pit». «GOODEATS»!!! Now if you are driving, which you will be if you come here, and don’t drive too fast because you will roll right past the place, go slow, but not too slow. When entering the place I noticed that the table settings were that red-and-white checker, picnic color, which seems to be the norm in the South where there is good BBQ. I ordered a slab(Dry) because I wanted to really experience the taste of the meat. My sides were cold slaw and potato salad; they threw in this large piece of Texas toast. Now they have sauces, three different sauces, based on how you eat your ribs, again I wanted mine dry. OK… the ribs were just a little, and I do mean a little salty, but had a really good hickory finish which offset the saltiness. When you add one of the sweet sauces to the mix, you have a perfect blend of taste that truly satisfies the palate. I recommend you stopping if you are traveling through Jackson MS, and pay the«Hickory Pit» a visit, you will not be disappointed with the food or friendly service.

I was sent to Hickory Pit for the Ham and Cheese sammich while I was looking for the best non-burger sammiches in Jackson. This is not anything I would normally order at a BBQ place. I like the pulled pork, but my lead came from a good friend so I bit the bullet and grabbed the Ham and Cheese… described as the«Hickory Pit’s Signature Sandwich» The bread is HP’s awesome buttered thick white bread that comes with BBQ plates and a monster flat-top grilled piece of ham and with American cheese dripping out. Yep. It’s good. Damn good. Makes me look at Hickory Pit in a different light. I am not a huge fan of MSBBQ so this gives me a reason to go in there again. I recommend it. Highly.

This spot is just okay, nothing spectacular in terms of southern bbq. I’ve had better and it’s located near strip mall heaven. The pork and chicken bbq were far better than the beef.

The food is exactly what you would expect, southern bbq. I had the half cluck and fries. I could tell that the chicken was smoked, and overall it had a great flavor. I’d order it again. The place has various homeade pies as well, each of these looked better than the next. But honestly, the reason for the 3 stars? The atmosphere of the place is just bad. It’s really small, almost uncomfortable. Good food, bad atmosphere. 3 stars.

I have ate a lot of BBQ and I will say I won’t be going back to Hickory Pit, it wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t good. I got the pulled pork sandwich, potato salad, and baked beans. The beans were really good, and that’s about it. The potato salad was the worst I have ever had and tasted like it was out of a container at Walmart. The pulled pork was dry, so I loaded it up with sauce. The sauce was alright. The bun however was a cheap, generic, nothing great bun. My husband had the same feeling as I did. I’d rather go to Sonny’s or make my own BBQ in the crockpot then spend $ 25 for two meals and sweet tea. The sweet tea was terrible too, it’s definitely not«southern fresh brewed sweet tea.»

I convinced my coworkers to try this place based on the reviews on here. I was very excited to have some good southern BBQ! I was not super hungry so I got a pulled chicken sandwich and a slice of the Hershey’s Pie. With a name like Hickory Pit, I was expecting a lot of smoked hickory flavor. My chicken had no smoked flavor what so ever. It tasted just like cooked chicken. The slaw was good on the sandwich and I mixed the hot and normal sauce to get something I liked. The Texas Toast was nicely done. My coworkers said the baked beans and slaw were good. I really enjoyed the Hershey’s Pie. It was delicious! One of my coworkers got the Pecan Pie and let me try a bite. It was underwhelming. Way too many pecans and hardly any sauce. If this is the best BBQ in Mississippi as the sign inside the door states, then I am very disappointed in Mississippi BBQ.

After skimming through the reviews here, Hickory Pit was a bit of a letdown. I went with the pulled pork sandwich platter with slaw and potato salad(a bit under $ 8). It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great, either. Everything was a bit unremarkable: Generic, pillowy bun. Unremarkable sides. Sauce that was overly tangy and sweet. Hot sauce that wasn’t hot at all. The saving grace was the pork, juicy and succulent. Since barbecue is all about the meat, I’ll be willing to give this place another shot. But next time, I’m going straight for the meat. The buns, sauces, and sides just aren’t worth your time here. (Oh, and another reviewer described Texas barbecue as «mainly consist[ing] of dry brisket on cottony rolls covered in sauce.» What. Cottony rolls? Sauce? What were you eating as a kid?)
