I’ve given this place a few tries and while it doesn’t disappoint, it doesn’t particularly strike me as amazing. The thing I probably love the most is the«torta de raton», a moist chocolate cake: D

I’ve never been served a better Corona in my life. Tall, curved glass, modestly salted rim, slow pour to the brim, couple fresh squeezed limes. It seriously tasted better than ever. The service here is great, traditional, but they care for you. Very attentive, and the bartenders will chat you up if you seek the company. I’ve had the Bandeja Paisa(grilled steak, rice, beans, crackling, a sweet plantain, an egg, avocado, and a corn cake) and the Sandwich Milanesa(breaded steak) on numerous occasions and I’m sure I’ll be returning soon. The prices along with the kind service just can’t be beat.

I’ve lived in Jackson HTS for many years and have tried many places in the area and I am honestly surprised by all the 1-star reviews for this place. La Nueva Restaurant has authentic, cheap and tasty food. The mixed grill is awesome, so is my recent favorite — the hot pepper, egg and chorizo breakfast special with rice and beans, which by the way, is served way past 2PM! On a recent visit, I was even given complimentary yummy Colombian empanadas. My friends love the Guava blended juice here. Sure, no one is running over to rush the service, but they have absolutely no problem with you walking up to them to ask for the check. It’s a relaxed atmosphere. The tables are far apart, so even if it’s crowded, no one is ever breathing down your neck and the food is consistently worth the 10 block walk I take over there. Honestly, I recommend it.

La Nueva is mostly Colombian cuisine, with some Uruguayan and Argentinian fare in the heart of good ol Jax Hts. It seems to be, slowly but surely, taking up monopoly over the block with its opening of about three different store fronts(possibly more, if i missed one) all within two blocks of each other. THIS one is the sit down restaurant/bar. Hubby tried the bandeja paisa, or as he would call it: the pendeja paisa — but we forgive because hubby is gringo and gringo is good to me. But I digress. The bandeja paisa was spot on, but I have to admit the steak was pretty thin. A skirt steak is always thin, but what they served was almost see-thru. I ordered the chuleta empanizada and that was the bomb diggity. I like to squirt a lil bit of lime/lemon on it before I devour and might i add, the portion was humungo! The sweet plantains were perfectly ripened and therefore sooo sweet, yummy! Quick tip: don’t miss out on the $ 6 happy hour jars of refajo(a refreshing drink made up of colombian beer and colombian soda) Perfect to share with your own gringo… or have it all for yourself.

i think there’s something wrong with their name here, as i don’t remember having my dinner in a bakery. or probably it started as a bakery and now it’s got a space for a restaurant. in any case, i had dinner here with a friend one cold evening. i enjoyed their bandeja campesina(ground beef, crackling, egg, rice, beans, a slice of avocado and plantain). i also enjoyed their chicken soup, which had chicken red meat added into it. service was OK, although i thought the lady server behaved snotty towards me(she’s pretty, OK, but I was hungry for food not for something else). interiors looked gaudy but the place looked pleasant on the overall.

The sandwiches here are pretty good and so are the empanadas. It takes forever to get food because this place is always packed. Sometimes you can’t tell where the line begins and ends because so many people just standing around.

Unfortunately, I live directly across the street from this noise hole. They are the most inconsiderate people I have ever encountered. Apparently drums are very important in Uruguayan culture. People from the restaurant think nothing of dragging huge drums onto the side walk at midnight and banging away and screaming. It sounds like they’re in the middle of my living room. When I call to talk to them about it, I get the old«I don’t speak English» routine. Yeah right.

The food here is great and affordable. They have great Columbian soup deals for $ 9. Service can be slow but at the same time they don’t mind if you hang out for a couple hours.

A few of the ladies behind the counter act like total stuck up c*nts. HOWEVER they have tasty capuccinos and decent coffee. I only go there for their empanadas and coffee. I called one of the ladies a «cucaracha» for being rude. I only go in when the young rude ladies are away. They act like they are superior but did they stop to think that they are the ones behind the counter serving me?

All I’ve had here are the Colombian buñuelos. They were really dry(maybe they were old) and they just tasted of oil. I wouldn’t go back, there are way too many Colombian bakeries to do a repeat of a bad one.
