I heard this was a chapter option in Iowa city so I thought I would try it. The produce was awful. It spoiled within a couple of days. I opened a package of mushrooms the day I bought them to find they were slimy. I investigated further to find dead flies. I was disgusted. I searched the small store for about 15 minutes trying to find raisins with no luck. I asked an employee for help and he said he couldn’t help me but was sure they had some. As far as cost, I may have saved 10 dollars or so by going here, but still had to go to hyvee to get raisins and fresh bail, so it wasn’t really worth the cost. The pros: the cashiers speak as if they know you. They are very friendly. They also have someone take your groceries to your car. However, I felt like he expected a tip. I would have, but I didn’t have any extra cash on me. He also wouldnt allow me to take them to my car myself. All in all, I won’t ever be returning to this store.

Okay if you need a few items and can’t be bothered to drive to the actual store.

Fareway is like the smaller, but equally delightful cousin of Hy-Vee in the Iowa City area! They’ve got a really great meat selection and some solid produce, though less than Hy-Vee. Their prices on meat are often better than Hy-Vee and it’s equally as good! The cheese selection is good, not great and they’ve got a relatively small, but sufficient produce section. They’ve got a small wine and beer section, but have 90% of everything you’re interested in. The checkers are super friendly and I’m always impressed that Chivalry is not dead at Fareway as the gentlemen checkers always help the ladies with their groceries and carry them out to their cars. Truly a place that will go above and beyond for customers! Great place to stop in for groceries and we tend to have better luck with them when stopping for a specific meal rather than shopping for the week — either way though, a place to check out!

this is a great alternate to hy-vee, but is the smaller of the 2 chains around here. you can typically find cheaper prices on most things. they’ve got a pretty good meat & deli counter. these guys aren’t open on Sundays & holidays, nor do they sell hard liquor… or fresh seafood for that matter. anyway, their selections are limited but if you’re just out to get a few veggies, sandwich meat… this could be for you.
