40% off if you check in on Unilocal!(However our meal was Already discounted when we got our check and we weren’t quite sure why.) I drive past Sakana of Tokyo a lot and have read he mixed reviews. I’ve been looking for an excuse to try this place out myself and finally had one! It was late in the evening on a Monday night and this place was open a bit later than our usual sushi spot so we decided to try it out. 45 minutes before close we rushed in, there was one other couple dining and a man who had brought in his whole take out order and they were remaking it :/. Not the best sign. Our waitress situation was interesting, two ladies were waiting on us and would hover over with each other awkwardly. We think maybe one was training? My husband got a beer, I forget what kind. Our waitress told us they are all the same. Ha! I ordered shrimp tempura and the volcano roll, he got the 500 roll(seemed fitting) and the big daddy roll. Yum! We both liked our rolls a lot. I’ve really been working on my husbands taste for any kind of sushi and he especially loved his rolls(one of which didn’t have anything fried in it!). This place didn’t top our favorite location, but we had a positive experience with the food and costumer service!

Delicious sushi! This restaurant gets 5 stars because the service is great and the food is always awesome. They also run a deal for 40% off specialty rolls EVERYDAY. It’s a family run restaurant and everyone that works there is super nice and accommodating. Plus, it’s always super clean and the ambiance is wonderful.

Smoked salmon nigiri and 500 roll are excellent. I ordered delivered to my hotel and it came faster than I expected with great service. I would absolutely order from here again when staying in North Indy.

Great sushi perfect amount of meat! And even better pricing. The menu has all of the sushi you would expect from a good sushi place and it is in a nice newer building so the restaurant itself is clean and appealing. I definitely recommend this place!

The food and service was good. They have lunch special that is affordable and the portion is good. Their miso soup was good. Overall a good place for lunch with kids.

For the record, the food here gets 5 stars but the customer service is so terrible, I almost wish I could give zero or negative stars. The 50% listed on this Unilocal page is not accepted and the menu link on Unilocal is also inaccurate. They offer 40% off rolls but it’s not all rolls and not even all specialty rolls. They are constantly raising prices and can’t seem to keep staff. I told the manager about the prices on their Unilocal link to their menu and how I’m disappointed to be paying $ 10 more and he told me not only do they not participate in Unilocal,he won’t honor any made of prices on there. On my way out, I noticed a Unilocal sign on the door. What a joke!

Nothing tastes fresh. Gyoza tasted like something from a freezer and the chicken in the bento box tasted old and flavorless. The sauce that came with the bento box tasted like a sour towel. The sushi was fine and like I remember it from previous owners, but there are no descriptions for the rolls that are on the paper check list and the rolls that are on the menu are not on the checklist. With so many other good sushi places around, we definitely won’t be back.

We visited on a Sunday night. The place was pretty dead. We sat at the sushi bar. The two sushi chefs working were amazing. We ordered nigiri, 500 roll, Sakana roll, and a foxy lady roll. All three are amazing. Can’t wait to come back!

The sushi is always delicious coming here. I haven’t found much better in Indy. Tonight we had the Playboy, Big Mouth, Kona, and Dragon rolls, and none of them disappointed. So flavorful and the spicy ones have the right amount of kick. We usually come on Monday nights when there’s a special going on. The beginning of the week is always quiet and pleasant. Definitely a good time to bring friends to try things out. We didn’t have any sake this time around, but they have choices always worth looking at.

average. Food was ok; not great. We had baked mussels(ok tasted mayonnaise), scallops appetizer(which was the second best item over a large bed of rice — probably about 3 to 4 cut up scallops cooked well, but slightly overdone/chewy), chicken fried rice(least good item –highly overpriced and salty) and a bento box with lots of fried veggies, shrimp tempura(my sons pick — the batter was light and not too greasy) and teriyaki salmon(a small portion that was well prepared). We also had the small sushi plate which was beautifully presented. It was all average while a gnat flew about our table through the slow service. They have a great looking outdoor seating area that I would consider in the summer for drinks and apps.

The service has gotten a lot better than the last time. That’s the best thing. The food is always really good. I had the«monkey brains» as the appetizer. They are warm, gooey deliciousness. We went with a various rolls: New Orleans, Big Mouth, and Fire Dragon. They were excellent. Bonus was –40% all rolls greater than $ 10. I like saving money.

Raw fish, you say? Of course I want more! Sakana is easily one of the best sushi places I’ve visited in Indy. The sushi is fresh, well prepared, and beautifully presented. I’d give two thumbs up, just based on how well-plated the rolls are. Located in Castleton, Sakana is easily accessible from I-465 and is just a 5-minute drive from Castleton Square Mall. There is plenty of parking available on the attached parking lot, and there’s even outdoor seating for those warmer weather months. My absolute favorite roll is the Playboy roll. Served in a neat little foil package, it’s decadently set aflame right at your table. I can honestly say that I’ve never had a bad sushi roll at Sakana, and the service with a smile keeps me going back. If you’re looking for great sushi at a reasonable price, add Sakana of Tokyo to your must visit list!

I made a reservation here for a bridesmaids meet and greet. I made a reservation for 7, at 7:30pm. We were seated in the very back of the restaurant, which was strange to me because hardly anyone was there. There were two other tables with customers, other than that the restaurant was empty. Anyhow, I arrived and several of the ladies were already there looking at menus. Our waitress arrived and asked if I would like something to drink, I ordered a water. About 10 – 15 minutes later, she arrived with our waters and asked if we were ready to order. I politely let her know that we never received menus, and she apologized bringing them promptly. It took her another 20 minutes to come back to get our order taken. Once the food arrived, it was… okay. I wasn’t that impressed. I’ve had better sushi and Japanese at cheaper prices. In addition, it was lukewarm. At that point, we were all hungry so we grumbled and took advantage of the time as we were eating to discuss things. Our waitress never came back to check on us. After about 30 min, I went to go look for her. At this point, I’m expecting to see tons of people filling the establishment, but no. There was only ONE table of 3 besides us, and our waitress was sitting at the bar on her cell phone. I walked up to her and asked if we could get our checks. And it STILL took her about 15 minutes to get our checks. I was highly disappointed in the service, and I’ll probably never return.

Worst experience with a sushi restaurant so far! Misleading advertising brings people in and rude service and awful food kicks people out. Definitely won’t go back. I can’t order from dinner menu during lunch time? Don’t use your little word playing business tricks try to bring people in, and than make them feel bad.

Was in town for business and heard some great things about Sakana, so I gave it a try and was extremely impressed! The owner Bart is gave us a complimentary appetizer, and the tuna was super fresh. Playboy Roll was delicious as was the Big Daddy Roll — super filling, but worth the food baby.

We came for our anniversary and enjoyed the Bento box special. Choose a red snapper teriyaki as one if the entrees, and large portion of sashimi as the other. The tempura veggies were great, the teriyaki grilled veggies were also just wonderful. I especially liked the super white tuna sashimi served with thin slices of lime… delicious.(Just beware of other sashimi that might be served with hot pepper… it’s much hotter than lime :-)) The salad with ginger dressing wasn’t exactly my favorite but it was a larger dish than expected. The dressing was a bit bland and watery. We’ll probably go back again for another try and take advantage of some of their specials.

Right now anyway, all sushi is 50% on Monday and Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Great deal, and no strings attached like I’ve seen at other places(the 50% off applies to regular and specialty rolls alike). I had a spicy scallop roll and a specialty roll with spicy crab and tuna on it(can’t find it on the menu online), as well as a small hot sake for $ 14.95! The rolls were both very tasty, although not mind-blowing. Nice atmosphere, dark décor, kind of urban. Service was fine.

I think some of the other reviews of this place are overly harsh. This isn’t my favorite sushi place, but I’ve always had good sushi there and great service. They have kept most of the rolls from when they were sushi on the rocks, especially their specialty rolls. I think if you’re someone just getting into sushi, that isn’t going to be overly critical about the texture and freshness of the fish(come on everyone, we live in Indiana!) you will definitely enjoy this place. I have never ever taken a novice sushi eater to this place who did not absolutely fall in love with the snow mountain roll. My personal favorites are the kamikaze and the oshizushi, but that’s based on my dislike of fried rolls. SOTR is a pretty good standard roll also. They’re udoni is superior to the udoni I’ve tried in any other sushi restaurant around Indy. The playboy roll is cool for its presentation, but like one reviewer mentioned, kind of oily tasting. Get it for your niece on her 10th birthday, like I did. Don’t get it for yourself when you want to try quality sushi. Get the kamikaze!

Delicious food! Also sushi is half-price on weekdays from 5p-6p, so you can’t beat that! I’ve been here multiple times, and the sushi is consistently great. These are my favorites dishes: Appetizer: Gyoza Sushi: Snow mountain roll Dessert: chocolate or coffee mochi The only time I was disappointed was when I booked a work party in the back room(large group). I went in to the restaurant and booked it with the manager. The week before the party I called to make sure everything was still good to go, and to place my order for appetizers — and they had no record of my reservation. Luckily, no one else had booked the Friday we needed and I was able to still reserve the back room. The waitress that served us during the party was attentive and friendly, but she didn’t seem to know the menu very well when my coworkers had questions. Overall, I still love this place and I definitely plan to keep coming back.

Does anyone else hate giving bad reviews? I do. The only time it felt good was maybe that South City Schnucks review(because that place is terrifying and people should be aware)… The Marsh review even made me upset to score low… And they literally pointed at me and said rude things. So anyway, as someone who follows Lorelai Gilmore’s belief system that a stove is oftentimes better served as storage for shoes, I eat out a lot. In St Louis there’s The Bike Waiter and GrubGo. Fishers has Foodler(meh) and Order-In(yay!) I used the latter(if my yay didn’t clue you in) after a long day at work(12 hour shifts are fun) and decided to order something I haven’t had in Indy nearly as often as I do in STL. Sushi. I didn’t feel like going to Bento(see review of that awesome sushi), so I decided to branch out and order from here via Order-In. They were a lot quicker than quoted. I will say that. But look at my photo for this place. Look at my sushi. I can’t remember the name of the roll, just the description: Shrimp tempura. Spicy tuna. And avocado. Topped with soft shell crap mix It should have been good. It should have been great… But presentation is everything. Fresh tuna is everything. Otherwise you feel like you’re eating a tuna roll made from leftover sushi bits… And that’s how this tasted. Overly fishy(but not a good flavorful way) and it looked disgusting. I didn’t even eat 3 whole pieces. I couldn’t bring myself to… However! The two stars represent how great the spring rolls and banana tempura were! So yummy! I just wish a place that was all about sushi was all about good sushi… Especially for that $ 15 roll… How something that was $ 4 tasted SO much better than something over 3 times the cost… I will never understand
