Great comfort food… I love the the atmosphere and the food is excellent. There wasn’t a crowd today, so I was seated and served immediately. And when myfood arrived… oooohhhh… heaven! 2 thumbs up!

This is a fantastic place for comfort food. Maxine’s is a staple of Indianapolis, known and loved by many. They do chicken and waffles in the best way. Ie the simplest. Their seasonal(fall) sweet potato waffles are the bomb, and so is their peach butter they serve with almost all meals. We also got a side of the fried corn bread and fried green tomatoes. Fried corn bread was like small, hearty cornmeal pancakes. Fried green tomatoes were standard, nothing exceptional. I haven’t tried them, but this place gives off the vibes that their fried catfish would be excellent. Very diner-esque without the grungy feel of Waffle House, this is a place I’d go back to again and again.

Food is great — maybe even fantastic at times — particularly the pancakes, omelettes, chicken wings etc., but the service is very spotty. The wait staff aren’t very attentive, orders take a long time to be prepared and aren’t always accurate. This is really sad because it detracts from what could be a great experience. You get a lot of food for a reasonable price … when or if it arrives.

Delicious chicken and waffles. I love the option to have chicken tenders. And if you can the sweet potato waffle is the BEST! The fried green tomatoes are tasty but slightly over priced.

Definitely my favorite restaurant in town! I can always come back for their blueberry waffle, fried chicken wings and peach butter anytime. The texture of waffle is chewing, peach butter is mellow, and the fried chicken wing is juicy!

When traveling, we go to local places to eat… I don’t want something that I can get at home, I want to find something that stands out… like this great little place attached to a gas station… they made you feel welcome, brought you great food, and had you leave wanting more! The chicken with the waffles was white meat, breaded perfectly and moist, the waffle was perfect, and props to them for cooking the veggies in the omelette perfectly, almost everywhere else cant figure out how to do this. Service, a little on the slow side… but nothing that we complained about.

Simple, sweet, and delicious! The chicken Tenders and waffles is a must but most of their dishes hit the spot! Nothing tops the corn bread and peach butter combo. I could just come here and munch on that by itself. Overall service is always great, but consistency needs a little work. The environment matches the hole in wall location and is always filled with vibrant people. Best of all its all halal meat! Highest standards in humane and natural meat.

I’ve visited Maxine’s about 3 times now, and this most recent time will likely be my last! We were in the establishment for 2 hours, and not by our own accord. The service was terrible and painfully slow. It took about an hour and a half just to get our food. I’m all about waiting for good quality food that takes time to prep, but I feel like a waffle takes about 3 minutes, tops, and they likely have a large amount of chicken already made. This is an okay place to go to say you tried it, but buckle up because it’s a long ride.

Coming back home from Indy, never had chicken and waffles, My bro loves this place it was great good service the staff was super friendly loved the wings juicy, crunchy, good size, great flavor, complimentary fried. Corn bread with peach butter excellent, had fried green tomatoes as app very good loved the breading would have given it 5 stars but 11.00 for 3 wings and a waffle(see my pic), a little pricey but I will definitely be back

I have never had such a bad restaurant experience. The group I was with ordered chicken and waffles, which was cold when they got it. I ordered a burger and didn’t even get my food until after everyone else was done eating because the waitress forgot to put my order in. The service was ridiculously slow and when I finally got my burger the order was wrong and we were over charged on our bill for it. We asked to speak with the manager and we were told we would get 40% off our bill for all the inconveniences. When the manager reissued the bill he only gave us 40% off my order, for the burger that was messed up and took forever to get, so it was $ 4 off a bill of $ 60+. Needless to say we will never go back there again. Horrible service, misleading promises and the food was not that great.

My first two dining experiences here were okay. The third one will definitely be my last. I called in a carry out order and when I went to pick it up, they’d lost it. So I placed my order to go and told them I’d wait. I asked for an iced tea to drink while I waited. I thought they’d probably comp it, but I had to pay. The person running the cash register didn’t know how to operate it. It took her 5 minutes to flag someone down to help her. After 30 minutes, I asked if my order was close to being ready. I was told that they were«boxing it up». 15 minutes later, I asked where my order was at and was told that they had accidentally given some of it away to someone else. Wait… what?!? I asked again and that was the only explanation I got. After another 10 minutes my order was ready and I took it home. The food was downright nasty and the order was missing a couple of items. I wound up throwing most of it away and ordered a pizza instead. Never, ever will I eat here again. Just not worth it when there are so many other great dining options downtown.

I love chicken and waffles and these didn’t disappoint. The chicken strips were crispy and salty, the waffle was light and fluffy, and the peach butter on top was rich and sweet. However, the menu advertises complimentary biscuits and peach butter in multiple places, something I was very eager to try after seeing them praised here on Unilocal.Even though we were brought little side plates, the biscuits never materialized. Maybe next time.

The food here really hit the spot! I was traveling to Cincinnati and I had a taste for some good ol’ soul food! Being that I’m truly a southern gal, I’m really picky about southern cooking. With that being said, My tummy was happy & full! Great portions, they don’t cook with pork, food was seasoned nicely without over doing it, service was great & the food came out extremely fast.

I’m a big fan. I stopped in Indianapolis on a Saturday en route from Cincinnati to South Bend. My first stop was another highly-rated breakfast restaurant but it was a bad fit; the line was too long, the seating was cramped, and the brunch menu lacked anything with eggs. I ended up at Maxine’s and it was like coming home. They were courteous, quick, and the food was delicious. The restaurant was filled with customers. My server was very busy but attentive. The Chicken Tenders & Waffles were delicious and very filling. I also got two eggs over easy and they were delicious. I would strongly recommend Maxine’s to friends.

This place was okay. Nothing was bad, but nothing was exceptionally good either. We both had the chicken and waffles different ways: I had the tenders with a blueberry waffle, The Fiancé had the wings with a regular waffle. The chicken was adequately seasoned, but there was nothing that stood out about it. The regular waffle was pretty good, but the blueberry waffle only had blueberry juice. I kept looking for a single, solitary blueberry and I found none. I could taste the blueberry flavor and see the streaks in the waffle, but no blueberries! Kind of depressing. The mac and cheese was actually pretty good. Really creamy and cheesy. The coffee was decent and the service was solid. If only there were blueberries.

Being from the east coast, I never had«chicken and waffles» before. Obviously I was dying to change that. Maxine’s doesn’t mess around. You get a huge waffle or you can choose 2 half waffles(half blueberry, regular, sweet potato, strawberry…) and then they give you three HUGE pieces of chicken– boneless or wings, your choice. Seriously tasty, great syrup too!

I hadn’t had chicken and waffles before until this past year when I went to Atlanta. I fell in love, so when my friends asked me if I wanted to go to Maxine’s I happily obliged. I had heard Maxine’s was good, and it definitely lived up to expectations! Maxine’s is really close to Mass Ave., so that’s a nice plus for when you’re in the area. The inside is very cute and provides a nice, welcoming environment. We were given corn bread and peach butter to start out with. The corn bread was amazing– didn’t crumble and had great flavor. Loved the peach butter! The menu is extensive, but I honestly didn’t look at it aside from the chicken and waffles. You can get wings or tenders, and plain, strawberry, blueberry, or sweet potato waffles. I had tenders w/half sweet potato, half strawberry waffles. There was a mix up so I ended up with blueberry/sweet potato, but they gave me my strawberry waffle half as well(without me even asking)! Anyway it was a happy mistake because I got to try pretty much all the flavors. The sweet potato waffles are AMAZING. They taste like«fall» to me. Cinnamon-y, sweet… just so good. The fruit waffles were flavorful and delicious too. Fluffy consistency of the waffles. The tenders has nice flavor and were cooked perfectly. Perfect breading to meat ratio(I feel like sometimes breaded chicken is all bread and no meat)! The meal is a bit pricey(I think the chicken and waffles are like $ 11? My bill was close to $ 15 after sweet tea was added I think…), but I had a lot of leftovers. The food was also delicious! Well worth the visit. Great food and service! I’ll definitely come back!

Chicken and waffles! What more could you ask for… Cornbread pancakes with peach butter, onion rings, fried green tomatoes, greens. This is seriously down home cooking! Next time I want to try a sweet potato waffle. The pan fried chicken was also delicious. Well worth the wait. I opted for chicken wings with my meal and we tried the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. I think it was ranch with fresh dill sauce that came with it and really was wonderful. The onion rings also were good. My companion had so many she shared. I know we plan to come back. I don’t know what took us so long!

I have always wanted to come here. I have no idea why it took us so long, but we were down the street at Easley and I saw on Unilocal that it was like 2 blocks up the street, so it was like fate! It was 5 on a Saturday so they weren’t busy and there was ample parking. we were seated right away and everyone was super friendly. My Aunt decided to get the pan friend chicken which did take 45 min to cook so we ordered it as soon as we sat down. She enjoyed it and she had a good portion of onion rings and she got fried green tomatoes as her side. she only ate 2 of the pieces, she got all dark. she thought it was a bit salty, but I had one of the pieces for lunch today and it was good. I am sure it would have been even better yesterday fresh. We decided to get an order of friend green tomatoes as an appetizer. They weren’t my grandmother’s but they were good. The dip was good too. They also brought us a plate of little cornbread pancakes and peach butter. They were really good. The first plate is free, but I think whatever they cost it would be worth it. I’d probably do that instead of the tomatoes next time. While our waitress got our drinks another lady came over and pointed out the special and said we should get in and just to make sure we tell our waitress. The special was Buy One, Get One 50% Off Chicken and Waffles Entrée. It’s only till mid July. So you’ll have to see what they currently have. So of course we got the chicken and waffles! I got the 3 chicken tenders and my husband got the 3 chicken wings. We opted for normal waffles this time. But for .50 more you can get sweet potato, vanilla, strawberry, and I think blueberry. It’s a flavor added to the waffle. My aunt was thrilled they had Pepsi and our waitress kept our glasses filled. I didn’t time how long it took to get her chicken, but it must have been that long. Of course they served us together, but it was probably hers they took longer. I enjoyed my chicken tenders. I only ate one and took the other 2 home. They were good sized. Next time I plan to try the catfish. Our waitress did forget to factor in the special, but she fixed it immediately and apologized. They helped up get out the door with my Aunt’s wheel chair and even brought our leftovers which I totally left on the table. I was really grateful that he brought it out to us. I didn’t find it overly expensive and we all enjoyed our meal. we will for sure go back.
