I recently gave my husband a Groupon for GumboaGoGo because I know he loves it. Since I’d had their food in the past(before being diagnosed as Celiac), I knew the food was great. This visit, I was concerned because with almost everything starting with a flour base, I figured there would be nothing to eat for me. He ordered the Gumbo to go and had Jambalaya with his Groupon. Turns out, in talking with the staff, the Jambalaya, Bourbon Chicken and White Bean Chili are all Gluten-Free! Next time we head here, I’m eating with him! Once I get a chance to try them again, I may have to bump to 5-stars; for now they’re 4 — but my husband would probably give them 5. This business has moved. Excellent vittles. Mouth is watering for them right now. They have CLOSED the Nora store. HOWEVER, they are OPENING a new store in Fishers in 116th street near the town hall. I hope it’s as good as the old store.

Absolutely love this place! The employees and food are equally as great, it’s just a shame they had to relocate. They’re ganna be in Fishers, off of 116& Fishers Point Blvd. Look for the name J. Gumbo!

The Datwich is definitely craveable. chicken in a spicy, beer-based marinade, with lots of goodies mixed in. I get the meat in a quart container to go, and eat it with a fork!

I went here today for the first time. I ordered the gumbo and thought it was very well seasoned flavorfully authentic. Compared to Yats I’d probably give this place the edge. GarlIc bread was pretty standard and was just enough for my gumbo. The manager was very cordial and personable. Would like to come again and try their other selections.

I am a southern girl who loves creole and cajuan food. I was not impressed with the service or the sample of food. We didn’t eat here for 2 reasons service and cleanliness. I asked for a sample and he was a little nasty about how many I could have. I think I will stick with Yats.

I personally like their food. It’s not bad. However they are not always open like normal business hours. I see the closed sign more often than it needs to. I do enjoy the food if you want a quick gumbo ;p

When you think of Cajun food in Indianapolis, one local chain comes to mind. Gumbo-A-Go-Go is a hidden gem. They have some items that you will find at the other place(chili cheese étouffée), but they also have many other items(sandwiches) besides the stews(gumbos, etouffees, jambalayas).

Yum! I had the chili cheese étouffée and was stuffed. I had eaten at Yats just one week prior and had gotten the same thing. Honestly, it’s a tie between the two. Gumbo a Go Go’s was spicier and I liked that. It felt more authentic. It depends on your spice tolerance level. The bread here blows Yats out of the water. Gumbo’s bread isn’t greasy, but instead nicely crsipy and had great spices on it. Five stars for the bread. I’d give more if I could. I also like how Gumbo is a mom and pop place, not a chain. I enjoy supporting local businesses. Next time, I’m getting a Datwich(which looked incredible) and a loaf of that bread to take home. Great prices!

Just had lunch at the w 86th street Gumbo a Go Go, and it was great! Good food, huge portions, not that expensive. I had the full combo plate with Crawfish Ettouffe and Jambalaya. There were lots of crawfish in the Ettouffe and lots of sausage in the Jambalaya. Both were seasoned well and tasty, although I like things spicy so I added more heat. The garlic bread was yummy, the sweet tea was delicious, and the staff there were very helpful and friendly. I recommend it!

I thought the infamous Datwich would be like a poboy. Not even close, its like a bbq pulled pork sandwich but with shredded chicken or turkey cajun/creole flavor. Quite tasty though and just enough heat. I thought the rice on jambalaya is a bit overcook, but the voodoo chicken is spicy delicious, and the gumbo is on the soupy side and very tasty.

I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of this place until I began working in the area a few months ago. It is very much like Yat’s in that the food is cheap, flavorful, and satisfying. I ordered the combination of crawfish étouffée and the Datwich, which came in generous portions and were served on top of rice, along with delicious garlic bread. The etoufee had a slight heat to it, and my nose quickly became a little runny — however, I am weak sauce so I’m sure most would be more than fine. I came here on a weekday around 1 pm, and there was plenty of seating. We received our dishes within a few minutes of sitting down, so this is a convenient place for workday lunch if you’re in a hurry. Can’t wait to try their other dishes! And it would be awesome if they opened up a location in downtown to give Yat’s some friendly competition *hint hint*

Mmmmm… spicy! Great cajun/creole for the spice lover. The Datwich, étouffée, and voodoo chicken are a must try. Love the presentation of paper plates and Louisiana hot sauce on the table(as if you need that, lol)!

Yaya chicken — the spicy description written on the chalkboard drew me in but this was too vinegary for my palate. I think it may have been due to the hot sauce used as I’ve found most American hot sauces tend to be vinegar based. Sriracha is my go-to hot sauce, which doesn’t have a hint of tanginess. Also, I must have been served from the bottom of the pan because I had a chunky piece of chicken that was burnt. I held off on publishing my review above until I could give it a second try. Second time was much better. On this night’s visit, I ordered the voodoo chicken which I liked much better. No vinegar taste and it had a slight heat to it which I enjoyed. It did take ten minutes to get my order taken but somewhat understood since there were three people with multiple orders in front of me. Unless you don’t mind waiting a few, you may want to call in to avoid the after work crowd. I am a fan of Cajun food ever since a trip to New Orleans so I’m looking forward to trying their other entrees. Both times I’ve gotten take out but did notice a bottle of Sriracha on every tabletop which is a plus!

I very much like Gumbo A Go Go but I’m not going to compare it to Yats. I’m just happy to have another Cajun place on the north side. I usually stick to the étouffée with crawfish when I go but I also recently tried the drunken chicken and the bourbon chicken which were quite good. I still want to try the voo doo chicken so I’ll definitely be back. The service is always friendly and pretty quick which is nice when you’re pressed for time at lunch. The only think I can’t understand about both Yats and this place is that the rice is always room temperature. Does it not get hot in the rice maker? Is that the problem? I’m still a regular customer though because this problem can easily be remedied by a take-out order and a microwave at home.

I agree with a lot of the reviews: this place is better than Yats and the Gatwich sandwich is one of the best sandwiches around! But I was not a fan of their jambalaya. The rice was dry and overlooked, and have tried better jambalaya in other similar restaurants in the city.

Ever since my first taste of cajan food, I have absolutely been hooked. The restaurant that seems to be the most popular around town for that type of food has always been my go to. So when our office moved clear across town, and nowhere near on of these restaurants, I was devastated to say the least… I may even say heartbroken. But lo-and-behold my silent prayers for something equally as delicious near the new office were answered. Gumbo A Go Go has a great menu with some things similar to other Cajan restaurants in the area, but also a few of their own that are great. I think the Bourbon Chicken might be my favorite so far. It’s really hard to go wrong with a plate full of wonderfully flavored chicken over white rice. Delicious. I haven’t yet tried the seemingly famous Datwich, but it is on the list of «to-try». The only down side, the couple of times I have gone with my vegetarian friend he was a little disappointed with the choices. So it may be hard to get a meatless option that you like, but I think it’s still worth giving a try. I’m going to be going back to Gumbo A Go Go quite often now!

So we stopped in for dinner tonight. First thing I noticed was the amazing smell. The menu was pretty standard cajun fair. We asked a few question about the menu and the first thing he said was its not yats. The guy was super cool and explained all of the different dishes. The 1 guy there was way nicer and a lot less pretentious than yats. Now to the food. It was spicier than yats, but ooooooooh so good. The portions were huge and the food was really quick. I got the red beans and sausage and the crawfish etouffe. My wife got the yaya chicken and chili cheese etouffe. All 4 were amazing. They had a home made chili sauce too. Makes me sad i don’t live on that side of town. Can’t wait to go back. My new favorite… Better than yats.

Best cajun in Indianapolis. Way better than Yats. Here’s why: 1) More options 2) Better portions 3) Better tasting 4) Better value for the price OK, I should make this review more about Gumbo A Go Go, but it’s now my new destination cajun when visiting town now. They have Zapp’s chips(voodoo ftw!). The server/manager/cashier was very friendly and bussed the tables while we sat and chatted after gobbling up our lunches. I had the crawfish etoufee and voodoo chicken. We also got a Datwich because of all the glowing reviews. I have never seen so many people rave over a sandwich before! It was good, but maybe my sights were set too high. There is plenty of variety of hot sauce on the tables for you to find what you want. Oh man, what a find. Thanks again Unilocal

Through my college days, when I came back to Indy during Holidays something I was most excited about was sinking into the Datwich. Sure, I’ve traveled, sunk my teeth into some seriously good creole, but really nothing like the Datwich. For a decade now, the Datwich has convinced me that it’s up there in the top 5 sandwiches I’ve ever had… so a real test was to take my co-worker, well-traveled, understands the beauty of a sandwich to Gumbo-a-go-go to see what he thought(so read below Ryan D.‘s review). I honestly don’t know how this place stays in business, but I don’t care. It seems like it’s the owners hobby to make the best sandwich in Indy, and so he continues to do it. Maybe they have a lunch crowd I’ve never seen. The crawfish etoufee is just fun to order, first of all. Secondly, nothin else tastes like it in Indy. You know what… there’s nothing else like this place in Indy. Even if you immediately think of Yats, it’s not the same. Yats dares to put cheese in their«creole.» Gumbo-a-go-go dares to take the blandest of meats — turkey — and turn it into a 10-piece jazz band of a sandwich that makes your taste buds feel like they’re being given a private concert by the Miles, Coltrane & the Chet Baker of sandwich making. Price: 6 for the Datwich — hearty, just right without having to take any home. Ambience: Comfortable. Well-cared for. And enjoyable as the giant New Orleans mural. Plenty of hot sauces on every table to choose from.
