A couple years ago, I would have rated HF a 4. They lose star to 3 now due to their overly restrictive coupon policy. Anyone who shops at HF knows that you’re crazy to go without one of the infamous 20% off coupons. A while back, they changed the coupon policy to exclude most of the good stuff you’d actually want to USE a coupon for. For instance, tool chests, air compessors, etc. You can still use them on the small hand tools, etc, but there are a ton of exclusions on the coupons these days that render them a lot less useful. HF has some real decent quality stuff, and lots of total crap, too. You have to be selective. If you want good stuff that is going to last, I’d recommend SK or GearWrench for the home mechanic. If you need some special tool that you won’t use often, and doesn’t justify the expense of a higher quality piece, HF is great. Great for cheap work gloves, etc. I feel a little guilty shopping here in a way, knowing that whatever I’m buying probably used to be produced in the USA and is now made in some sweat shop in China by people sleeping on a straw mat at their workbench. So, I probably frequent this place a little less than I used to. Mainly due to the crappy coupon policy, though. I’m willing to exploit some people to save a buck, but at least make air compressors eligible for a coupon.

I wanted to get a quick Christmas gift for a man, and hadn’t thought to go into Harbor freight. I blew it off as another tool store. I usually buy Craftsman, but the weather was getting bad, and i knew i had to finish my Christmas shopping at that moment. I went into Harbor freight, and I was surprised. There were tools for everything. And tons of prices! I do think you get what you pay for, but I also think some thing, s like pliers, can be over priced. I was pleased with he selection. It far outweighed what I expected. Price wise, it was cheaper by far than Lowe’s, I hope it’s good quality. I wrapped them, so I’ve not experienced having anyone use them. They have tons of knickknacks. Not just tools. And it’s huge, full of useful items. It certainly put our Ace Hardware, which was less than a mile a way, out of business cause of the selection at Harbor Freight. I meant to look at their epoxies, but didn’t take the time. This is an awesome store. The holiday line was long, but every holiday line is long. They have sales, and are worth keeping an eye on.

A hardware store that’s big enough to have all my needs but small enough that I don’t need a rascal to get around? A hardware store where the employee actually know more than I do and are not spread so thin that it takes days to track one down? Prices that are lower then most larger competitors and customer service that will speak to you?! Lowes and Home Depot can kiss my … Harbor Freight you now have a life long customer.

Selection pretty good. Prices are as cheap as you will find for tools. Service is nonexistent, but if you know what you need you really cant complain at these prices. The line to check out is long and slow.

If my dad had his way, he would be here every day. This meant I spent a lot of time here as a kid wandering through the aisles and asking questions. They used to sell little wooden models of airplanes and dinosaurs and cars, and I completed the collection. They are still in my bedroom to this day. I’m honestly no expert on tools but the guys here have always been friendly(even when I was a little girl buying keychains and mini flashlights) and thank goodness they sell gift cards, because otherwise my dad wouldn’t have anything to open on Christmas.

Tools at reasonable prices. The make a house brand«Dremel» that you can buy for around $ 25 or $ 30 and the blades are only $ 7-$ 10. If you buy the brand name @ Lowes or Home Depot you’ll be close to $ 100 for the tool and then blades are $ 20. Cons: bought some masking tape and painters tape. They wouldn’t return or even give store credit without receipt. I don’t recommend buying tape from them and return policy is poor.
