I hate to post this because I love this place so much but I have to. The last time I was there, April 2016, a roach was crawling near our table. I hate roaches especially where my food or drinks are involved. I haven’t been back because I was grossed out but more hurt than anything. I really love this place but can’t do it until changes are made.

Bar + coffee shop + brunch joint + tapas restaurant? What could be better? Not much! This place has truly become a favorite of mine for its versatility, or rather its appeal to the ADD aspect of my personality. I usually come in the morning, sometimes after an overnight shift at the hospital, and like to spend 1.5+ hours indulging in Woodbar’s sense of comfort and coziness and catching up with friends or my husband. The service is great, and the place is always energetic without being uncomfortably packed. I believe the kitchen is shared with Canopy next door. The food is always tasty and if you come later in the day there are multiple menus which include happy hour and tapas to choose from. They are always nice enough to accommodate my request for egg whites in my scramble, which I appreciate. There are also delicious looking pastry items in which I have yet to partake, but it’s only a matter of time. I’d like to see what the ambiance is at night, because I’m not sure if this actually takes on the bar scene, or continues to function more as a coffee shop. Either way, I love it! Def a favorite.

Got some apps and dessert. We also had a few drinks… The food was tasty. I think I may have just had the best roasted veggies that I’ve ever had. Yes, I’m writing about veggies. The bread pudding was excellent… superb…delicious! Come and see Clay at the bar.

I’ve already decided this is the place that will make me gain weight. We came for drinks and dessert food but… !we ate real food. Small plates on the happy hour menu! 3 – 7EVERYDAY. had…roasted veggies, shrimp and grits fritters and croissant bread pudding… all were great. Drank the mule too and enjoyed it. Walked from my apt, this is great. The menus include canopy food from next door too. Our bartender/waiter was awesome(Clay, thank you !)he music had me jamming. This is good for groups of four or less. It’s not a big place and everyone we saw were in groups of two.

Came in here about 3:00PM to catch HH, and Lord help, the parking was bad. When you drive into the private lot, one half of it is reserved for the other establishments in the area, while maybe about 10 spots are available for a free-for-all car blood bath. My first thought was, «Do I really have to fight another driver so I could eat?» How annoying. The place also seems to be connected to another business, so I was a bit confused with that. Setting was nice and clean so that was appreciated; however, that HH menu leaves much to be desired. I had ordered the Greek style pizza, the fritters, and the deviled green eggs. The fritters were by far my favorite, and I think it had to do with the aioli. The pizza was a little too greasy for my liking, and the eggs were not my cup of tea. Maybe if I tried out the actual menu, my opinion of this place would a bit different. It’s aight I suppose, but as of right now, not a place I would try again.

If you are an older(over 45) hipster, this is your place! Consistently friendly & courteous service, excellent food & beverages, whether it’s happy hour or breakfast. The BEST in Montrose, unless you want noisy, laptop land with 31 students in vegan shoes… or you want to tap that guy/gal u met in the hood, walking your chihuahua last night, Jus saying

Staff is rude and lazy. What sucks the most is that the food is actually pretty good. I ordered an appetizer and entrée at the same time. I got my appetizer and never received our next dish. Turns out that when the bartenders switched, this guy was so eager to leave that he forgot to actually put in our order to the kitchen. We waited about 45 minutes for our food. I also ordered a glass of wine that I never got. However, the woman sitting right beside me ordered the same glass and got hers before she even finished ordering it. How rude! Not an apology or anything when I brought it up either. Screw Woodbar.

My savory pastry has been demolished. The tomatoes were so yummy. Someone put time, effort and forethought into that thing. Or found an amazing cookbook… Either way, I scarfed it down. I wasn’t just surprised by how nice the barista was, the customers greedy me too. It was like a real life CHEERS, you know, other than no one knew my name. But EVERYONE was really friendly. The staff explained everything and length and helped me make a decision(I’m THAT indecisive customer). I’m really excited I found this place. Quiet, helpful, friendly. Perfect for my morning coffee

I came to the bar for supper and drinks. The bartender was dismissive. There was a party that grew by the hour. They just flowed in while the rest of us were ignored. I asked the GM to help. He did. I attempted to order but was ignored. When I did order the staff was dismissive. The cheese plate was fridge temperature. When I asked for a go container I was handed a plastic container. The cheese was cold and bolted into the container. It’s cozy; if you are willing to self serve! Very disappointing! I adore Shade. It is the best restaurant in the Heights./above and above the rest. I take my birds/my dogs/my granddaughters who love very morsel. Please stay. All the Heights spots are flooded w/TV sports. Last night I asked to watch The Hillary investigations at a Washington dive. All the TV’s were on the sports channels. Shade has always been a thousand stars above the other the Washington joints. They have their standards/their incredible service and respectful tolerance. If they leave; I will roam with no voice for excellence. Go now/support the best on in the city. Without Shade we will loose our only left tradition.

I am usually lazy enough not to write a review for any place but this place really forced me to write this review. Staff here are incredibly rude and disrespecting. We went to this place to study and have coffee, went to the bar to order but the guy pretend to be busy and kept us waiting for 20 minutes without saying a single word to us! He was keep going back and forth to Canopy restaurant next door and not even looking at us. After that we decided to leave this place and not ever ever come back! No wonder this place was empty like a ghost town!

I *love* this place! I should really go more often. The interior design is sooo sweet. Very clean and modern and comfortable at the same time. I love the light bites. It’s a perfect spot for a relaxed coffee or glass of wine and a snack! I gobbled up their delicious hummus plate in no time.

Let me set the stage: This past Saturday afternoon, maybe 15 people in the whole place with 5 – 6 people at the bar, 3 of which were us. We sat at the bar, we were handed drink menus then…20 mins later(not exaggerating)…still nothing. Two employees behind the bar, the one guy was clearly in training and the other lady was making coffees. He was looking for some type of liquor that was empty and left the bar. I’m assuming he went to Canopy next door to get some more. He never came back within the 20 mins! The lady making coffee didn’t even acknowledge us at the bar. We were sitting right there. ZERO customer service in this place. When we were leaving, the lady said and I quote, «so sorry». Really? That’s it? Talk about complete laziness and lack of customer service. How about, «Hey guys, I’m really sorry, please sit down and let me get you a drink on the house». Anything except, «I’m sorry» which really meant I don’t really care you left. If I was the manager/owner of this place I would seriously look at the employees they have working b/c they could care less from what we experienced this past Saturday.

Part of the Canopy and Shade group. Attached to Canopy, and you can even order from their food menu if you want. A small, narrow and cozy bar that is usually really low key and accessible. Coffee, cocktails, wine, and small plates are the name of the game here. While service is incredibly personable and professional, they do need more than one bartender. Both times I have been, the bartender works hard, but still has trouble keeping up with the few patrons. No bother, they eventually get everything taken care of. Food comes out before you know it though. Some interesting house cocktails, and they make an on point old fashion. So I am happy. Not everything on the small bites menu is a hit, like the pork tacos. To expensive for basic tacos, but there are plenty of other good stuff on the menu. Empanada Trio is excellent, mac & cheese is good, creamy, and filling. Lobster mini rolls, and Crab Cakes over fried green tomatoes… oh yeah. Also, like I said, you can order from the Canopy menu if nothing catches your fancy, or you want something more substantial. They also do a daily happy hour menu from 3 – 7. Like the other bars in this group, you like it more and more every time you visit. Never flashy or even that unique. Just solid and enjoyable all around. Not a regular spot of mine, but always worth while. I have come here before some jazz at Cezanne, which is the start of a good night.

I’m always looking for unconventional study spots and this one, I’m glad to say, is pretty undiscovered. The décor is very hip, making me feel all sophisticated. During weekday afternoons, it’s perfectly quiet. On the weekend, it’s virtually empty super early until about 8 or 9 am and after the brunch crowd leaves around 3 pm. There’s the option of outdoor seating as well if you wanna soak up some of Houston’s gorgeous weather lately! In terms of the menu, I’ve only ever tried a mocha latte, which is top notch, and their delicious chocolate croissant and turtle croissant. The turtle croissant is very sweet — with chocolate, caramel and pecans, I believe. Perfect for a treat-yo-self kinda day!

Woodbar has been a bookmarked place for us since they opened next door to Canopy some time ago. We finally swung by as a starter to our night out and had a couple drinks with friends. My wife and I had intentions of eating dinner there, by way of a few small bites plates, but unfortunately arrived right after they closed their kitchen.(FYI kitchen closes at 10pm) That being said, the waiter was really helpful and worked with me to throw together a meal of sorts out of some small pizza pastry daily specials that were still out in the pastry display case. The food we tried, which were two margherita pizzas set in light pastry dough and a croissant, we’d be happy to come back for a few more bites out of their menu. You’re not going to get stuffed full here, but the food we saw others eating, and on the menu, looked like great accompaniments to a few cocktails. Drinks were very good. I ordered something complicated and the waiter/bartender had no problem whipping it up. The cocktail menu offers a few interesting house drinks, including a kale gin mixture that my wife ordered and loved. It was kind of like juicing greens but then wanting some booze in it. Wait staff was spartan at that hour. It was just one guy running around bringing drinks around, ringing people up and making the cocktails. He was very nice and tried his best to be on top of everyone’s needs. When the check came, some things were mixed up, while others were omitted but we were able to get things hashed out rather quickly. Overall, Woodbar is a quiet bar with fancy finishes that makes it seem like a great start or finish to your night out. If you’re looking for somewhere trendy, but small and intimate, you may have just found your bar. For my wife and I who live around the corner, this will be a great dressed up walkable locale for a few drinks on the fly.

Woodbar is solid. It’s really Canopy’s more intimate cousin. The food offerings are similar. They have a decent selection of cocktails and lots of coffee options if you’re into that. It’s kind of cool because it’s a restaurant/bar/coffee shop all in one. It opens bright and early, so if you’re looking for brunch before the masses are typically awake on a weekend, Woodbar is your place. The crab cakes with fried green tomatoes were good(not great). The mac & cheese was just ok to me, but my bf loved it. He loves everything, though. Service is also very friendly, attentive, but not intrusive. Basically, I wouldn’t exactly call Woodbar anything special, but what it does, it does right and it’s a great place if you’re looking for a quiet spot.

They say actions speak louder than words, and the fact that I’ve been to Woodbar three nights in a row should say it all. I’ve had their coffee, I’ve had their food, and I’ve had their desserts, and I must say that I am pleased with it all. Woodbar also has it all= whatever your fancy, they probably have it. Since they share a kitchen with Canopy, you can order a light meal or plated desserts(chocolate mousse cake was delish, and not too sweet). There are also an assortment of baked goods. On one occasion I was feeling a bit peckish, so I ordered the crab cakes. The plating was beautiful, especially for a café setting, and the crab cakes had big lumps of sweet crab meat. They were resting on fried green tomatoes, which were refreshing and crunchy. The breading on the tomatoes was well seasoned. The jalapeño sauce did not make my mouth go on fire, but it added a slight kick in each bite. For drinks, they have a full bar– pick your poison, as well as a full espresso bar. Their flat white was quite good, but I insist that you order the Café Bön Bön if you are a lover of Vietnamese coffee, Coffee, coffee flavored desserts, or anything of that nature. You have a double shot of espresso resting on a layer of condensed milk. It’s sweet and delicious. Perfect if I’m wanting coffee and dessert, but my stomach can’t take both. They have a really great cocktail program. From just a quick glance at the cocktail menu, I can see that there are some really interesting flavors and combinations. I look forward to trying those soon! The atmosphere of the café is very classic and comfortable. Service is always wonderful. You can come in and sit at the tables, or the bar, or even walk up and order. It’s a great place to catch up with your friends or even chill by yourself. Great food, great drinks, and open late-Woodbar is a winner for me!

The décor and furniture here is too cute. It’s so inviting and is really set up as if it’s an art of its own. Unfortunately, service here is lacking. I stopped in here on a quiet Monday afternoon for a quick cup of coffee. There were only two other parties present and about three people working the bar. I ordered and 20 minutes later received my vanilla latte. The coffee was very milky and did not taste like coffee. It had a lavender taste to it. I wouldn’t mind the slow service if it was accompanied by an apology or maybe even a decent cup of coffee.

Very generous servings of wine(thumbs up!) Food was okay(very similar to Canopy… so if you’re a fan… thumbs up). I would recommend the lobster rolls(4⁄5). Didn’t feel like I was getting completely ripped off and it comes with chips AND tasty coleslaw. I would not recommend the calamari(2⁄5). It was extremely bland and came with two underwhelming sauces. The lamb keftas(3⁄5) were surprisingly spicy, which I actually enjoyed. Don’t get them if you can’t take the heat.

I’m not too into drinks, so this review will just be on the small bites at Woodbar. I’ve never been to Canopy, but all the food served at Woodbar come from Canopy’s kitchen, so if you’ve been there, you know what to expect. We came around 6 on a Friday night and it was pretty busy! It was kind of an older crowd, which surprised me. Maybe it was because it was earlier in the day and the young’ins haven’t come out to play yet. We ordered the mini lobster rolls, lamb kebab, and calamari to share. Everything was pretty pricy for small/medium portions, so beware. The lobster rolls came with slaw and potato chips, and everything was kind of salty but not bad. The lamb kebabs were pretty good(and spicy), but the samosas were meh. They were wrapped in what seemed to me like the frozen puff pastry from the grocery store, and they lacked flavor. The calamari too, was completely flavorless unless you dipped it in the sauces. One of the sauces seemed like diluted Thai sweet chili sauce, and the other one tasted faintly of wasabi. All in all, an average food experience. But people probably come here more for the drinks than the food: P.
